Apple MacBook Air with M1 review: A fan-less notebook faster than most Windows PCs

Apple's new MacBook Air is stunningly fast. It's raring to go the instant you open its lid. Want to browse the web? Watch it load bloated sites faster than you've ever seen on a laptop. Want to play some games? Step back as it blows away every ultraportable, with no fan noise to get in the way. And if you need to take a break, don't worry. It's got enough battery life to last you all day. Using the new MacBook Air is like stepping into a new world where we can demand much more from ultraportables.
All of this is thanks to Apple's new M1 system-on-a-chip (SOC), its first for Macs. After more than a decade of building its own mobile chips, Apple has accomplished an impressive feat: It proved its computers no longer need Intel inside.
Pros:
- Incredibly fast performance
- No fan noise
- Excellent keyboard and trackpad
- Retina Display looks great
- Can run iPhone and iPad apps
- Excellent battery life
Cons:
- Still has a 720p webcam
- Only two USB-C ports
Engadget Score: 94

It was Steve Jobs’ original vision to have the first MacBook Air debut with no fan but the technology wasn’t possible at the time. There’s a story about him breaking down crying once the engineers made it clear to him that it was impossible.

As a windows user, I am genuinely impressed. Apple have pulled off a hardware and software miracle here. The part that gets me is the fact it runs x86 software better than its x86 laptop versions. That's all whilst it's using translational coding approaches to get over the architectural hurdle. That's crazy! I also like the fact that iOS apps are there, even if it's not the greatest implementation. I don't think I will buy a mac, certainly not until ay least a second gen version. Aswell as I am in the data analysis profession, so I constantly use Windows pcs, don't really want to have a Mac as a home laptop if I am switching between them. Also gaming is not about laptops, its about desktops for me, so not really interested from that angle either. But it is tempting, these are clearly game changers, I would definitely be tempted in the future.

I want this so bad! Sounds way more powerful than my HP Spectre X360 2017 with a U-Series Core i7 CPU! Even though this would edit photos much better in Lightroom (I’ve only got 8GB of RAM) and I’d love to have MacOS, I’m going to get another year out of my PC and get next year’s MacBook Air. Given the massive improvements made with the move to ARM-based chips, I’d be very surprised if I ever go Windows again.

It's my first time switching to MacOS and I hope that even the base model would serve me well. I looked up other high end Windows laptops like Surface and Dell XPS and was shocked because their price tags are similar, if not higher than the M1 Air 😂. In power efficiency/thermals yes, but in raw performance for sustained production and gaming? Yet to be seen with real world tests - going off Jarrod’s tech there are a few laptops with 4800H + 1660 Ti around the 999-1249 price range - especially given those laptops have true active cooling it seems very unlikely that they wouldn’t rather dramatically outperform VS the Apple M1 laptops in the same price range.

Same here, I currently own a gaming pc running windows and an android phone and have always looked down on apple products. This new M1 chip however is looking real nice but there are a few issues I still have with it. 1. I have never used MacOS so I don't know how I'll like it compared to windows 2. I want to wait till the next iteration where they will hopefully redesign the chassis but I may need a laptop before then 3. Most people don't even have a solid state drive in their machines yet. What Apple has put out here for capability will be in the upper third of performance for a PC laptop. It is going to suffer bleeding edge hardware issues as far as optimized programs for it, but any new CPU architecture suffers from that for a couple of years. The next generation of PC's are also going to have many of these features, including new features in the CPU and GPU that optimize using AI portions of the chip to get better performance. The biggest boost you are going to see in upper end machines is going to be high speed solid state drives bringing really fast boot times and program loading times along with added performance when handling large files or application that access the hard drive regularly. My current set up is my first with a solid state and even though it is just a SATA interface one, it makes a huge difference in productivity and large program load times. I just hope that they have a good plan as far as 3rd software development goes moving forward. Their inhouse software has always been very well done and focus on user experience in a way that more developers should shift to, but it is the heavy work applications that really make or break a system and make in the default choice like what they did with creative software suits when they shifted to the x64/x86 architecture.

all good about Mac. However I landed in a unresolved issue on my Mac some months ago in 2020 when after installing the Windows 10 I found that the Mac Serial number says 'unavailable'. Today I cannot use iMessage and FaceTime apparently due to missing serial number under 'About This Mac'. I feel some issue cropped up from Boot Camp. Not only this I found horrible crackling sound from internal speakers. I am located in India. All effort to get Apple support so far has failed on this issue.

It‘s usually such a no brainer, but the questions are ‚what comes out next and when?‘ Are we seeing a different looking 14 inch next year? How fast will the performance models be? How much of a price difference will that be? That is what holds me back from upgrading.
@andyH_England
@andyH_England 3 жыл бұрын
Next year is a major refresh that will include miniLED displays and a new design as well as M1X chip and dedicated graphics. I suspect it will be in Q3 of 2021 and they may even wait for the next update to the A15 to base the chip on, so maybe M2X? Pricing, it is Apple so do not expect cheap, probably inline with current versions and although no doubt the M1 is cheaper to make than buying Intel, they have many years of R&D to recoup.
