Apple also advertises Wallet, Siri, and Apple Music, and Apple TV (maybe icloud as well) when you set up an iPhone, even if you import data from your old phone. Whenever I set one up for family members I deal with this for them. As other videos have concerned though, they don't seem to make their money but pushing ads directly, but from tracking information that they've led users to believe they don't collect. So far Samsung doesn't seem to push their apps as hard, but their Galaxy store ads are SUPER pushy because they try to trick you into signing up for notifications or installing apps you don't want. Every company is at fault for these practices. In Windows' case, I don't think the push to Microsoft account is bad, I think cloud backup is important, onedrive is integrated well, and it can even save a copy of your bitlocker key if you choose to do so. It's ALL the other ads that Sam pointed out before that which I have a problem with, and their constant attempts to force you to use Bing.

Apple sells targeted ads in the App Store (and I think also in Maps, and probably more). Those "suggested" apps are also paid ads. The apps listed as suggested, have paid for it. And Apple has announced they want to make more money from ads. Do note the "more". It means Apple already sells ads and they will expand it.

​@@mrkitty777 fedora is my favorite linux distro i've tried so far. It's just so clean out of the box. Uses flatpaks. Has wayland. Stock GNOME. Btrfs lets you have a virtual home partition instead of manually making a home partition and guessing how big the root needs to be. Checks all the boxes for me -- very easy to install too. I've heard good things about mint / popOS, but the former still doesnt have wayland support and i havent gotten around to trying the latter yet.

The most expensive version of Windows would be Enterprise and that one is of course configurable to have no ads nor telemetry. It would be an absolute no-go for use in enterprise environments otherwise and enterprise users are Microsoft's bread&butter, aka the only users they give a rat ass about. Unfortunately you can't just buy Enterprise as a private customer and it probably costs thousands per month or year to use it.

Windows 10 RTM = spyware and ads, but atleast tolerable. Windows 10 20H1 = spyware and ads but starting to get annoying. Windows 11 RTM = more spyware and ads to the point where you wanna throw up Windows 11 23H1 = more spyware and ads to the point where you either trash your computer or downgrade to Windows 8.1 or earlier despite being out of support but atleast they don't have ads. Windows 12 RTM = I don't wanna know

Jokes aside, on my old laptop I recently tried installing Windows 8.1 just out of curiosity, and it was incredibly fast compared to newer versions of Windows. Boots up in 10s, faster than my new laptop with Windows 11.

2 months ago I decided to kill Windows Update subsystem completely (which was very complicated task to be honest). No more unnecessary scans, stupid updates that restore all spyware and telemetry etc. Without Updates, Windows is actually very good OS.

​@@chiefdenis Group Policy didn't work for me (even with Pro edition). I simply wrote a script to read some registry values and made sure those are set properly. I will allow updates once per year, that is more than enough. What I hate about updates are telemetry restarts. Even if you kill all telemetry and spyware some updates restore it back. I hate that. The only reason why MS is forcing updates is to make sure spyware they installed over billions of PCs works flawlessly.

About that Music App thing, that isn’t an “ad”. Apple Music is paid only. It doesn’t have a free tier. So obviously when you’ll try to use an app which won’t function, it would show you a banner to join it. That’s not what an ad is. An ad in an OS is when you’re trying to do one thing but you’re being suggested to try something else as well.

Microsoft is adding more ads to windows, a paid OS which is already bloated af with data collection. Meanwhile on Linux people got mad when canonical added optional error reporting to ubuntu. I use ubuntu. It does not bother me at all because I just decided to disable it. It does not nag me to enable it. Linux is better, always has been and always will be if windows keeps going like this.
