In honesty, the M1 iMac is still AWESOME value considering you are getting a fully functional display with an actual OS. The Studio display is great if you have an existing MPB, Mac mini etc. Really wish we saw a higher refresh rate but at least you don't have to pay $1000 for the stand like on the Pro Display XDR :) Still remember that in the crowd at WWDC hahaha. Isn’t the height adjustable stand for the Studio Display basically a smaller version of the Pro Stand? It makes you think about how much you pay for the display and how much you pay for the stand.
@Scootir1852 жыл бұрын
Nice comparison. I think the XDR is also part of a sales trick Apple (and everyone else) uses to make their products look reasonably priced called anchoring. If you saw $1599.00 compared to other similar monitors you’d see it as outrageous, but they anchor the notion that a monitor can easily cost $6K then suddenly $1600 starts to seem almost reasonable.
@Slurpy2k82 жыл бұрын
So Apple priced the XDR based on what they planned to price a product that came out years later? Doubt it. The XDR actually isnt outrageously priced, it competes with reference class monitors that are 20-30K and even exceeds them. And there's nothing really out there you can compare the price of the Studio Display to.
@Scootir1852 жыл бұрын
@@Slurpy2k8 Didn’t say the XDR was a bad monitor for the money But it’s still crazy expensive. And yup - it’s pretty much the standard playbook to structure pricing in this way. Apple wins both ways - they get to sell some expensive monitors to true professionals but ultimately and more importantly leverage it to make a $1600 60Hz IPS display seem like it’s not overpriced. And that will help them sell a lot of those, probably at much higher margin.

@@Slurpy2k8 true ! And don't forget that the XDR is the only 32'' 6K monitor on the market. That doesn't explain the price (this you did well) but it's a fact : if you want a 32'' "retina" (220 ppp / smoothing @2x), no other monitor can do that today Monitor manufacturers (LG, Samsung, etc) could easily propose a 32'' 6K thunderbolt monitor with just an IPS LED panel (but a good one), this would be a far less expensive model while allowing them comfortable benefits, but they prefer to fight on the field of cheap 27'' 4K ... if someone understand why .... ?

The Studio was richer, sharper, the blacks were darker, the whites were brighter, so much better contrast. The iMac looked grey and dull by comparison. The iMac is great, but the Studio is just magic. The iMac is a compromise by comparison.

I got the glossy version of the studio display even though there is a window right behind me. In the week that I have had it, the coatings on it are extremely impressive at controlling glare on a glossy display and it gets more than bright enough to see even during the brightest part of the day. Unless you absolutely cannot tolerate glare, then I don't think the nano-texture finish is worth it. As much as I enjoy the studio display, I'm very saddened that it is not a 27" iMac with M1 pro and Max SOCs. From what Apple Insider says, it does support HDR, but doesn’t get any brighter than its normal 600 nits. @ghost-user5592 жыл бұрын
It supports HDR but they cannot legally claim it because it doesn’t have the full brightness to qualify for that label. So you would not get the full blacks or whites of a tv or display with the full “hdr” label, but for all intents and purposes it is fully capable of viewing HDR content (although with a reduced white and black range).

@@techinrl9869 Well that’s kind of what I mean, it doesn’t pass certification because of the brightness limitations, but it CAN technically play HDR content in a less dynamic range. That’s the strange thing about all these silly LCD lobby and USBC and Thunderbolt and HDMI standards is they are all so specific, yet the manufacturers are all so different in the quality of cables and ports and components vary so drastically. So for HDR content this screen would function within its range of brightness to view HDR, but on a technicality it doesn’t have the contrast or brightness ratio to qualify for the official standards, which is actually why Apple doesn’t advertise it as HDR, but that’s interesting because they still gave the customer the ability to utilize HDR content. So it’s very interesting to include functionality you can’t advertise just for the benefit of the viewer. That’s a rare thing for corporations, so I can’t help but think they had supply chain issues that prevented full HDR implementation on these devices, and so they essentially “binned” the Display brightness capacity at the last minute until the mini led models.

If it doesn't have HDR modes, it can't play HDR content. Simple as that. You can play a HDR video, but you'll only get sRGB color space.

That's next I think. 24 inch, 4.5K monitor. Then they will discontinue the iMac line entirely. You heard it here first!

I was thinking of getting the studio display but I can have another Mac if I purchase iMac and it has the same display but smaller. I think the iMac 🖥 has amazing value. iMac will be my next purchase.

Have to admit that orange is fire. Wish the Studio Display came with that option............which would probably have a $500 upcharge.

Hi! I'm looking to get a new desktop to use architecture programs (rhino, AutoCAD etc). I was wondering if anyone knows if you can use the Mac 24" as a display for the mac studio desktop box? I know it sounds silly, but the iMac is cheaper than the studio display whilst including all the accessories. Would it be possible to connect iMac to the Studio?

Great video thank you. Huge respect for pronouncing "soldered" properly. I cringe when I hear "sawdered" in US videos.

But... couldn't I use the iMac 24" as a display for my MBP (a 16" 2019)? A quick google talks about older iMacs, this seems almost too good to be true. While my MBP is older and not an M1, it has a lot of ram and decent storage space, and it's where all my stuff is.

There are two ways which would be much better for Apple users / consumers ; 1) imac 32 inch / 6k with a reasonable price 2) A new display 32 inch / 6k with a reasonable price Because ; 1) imac 24 inch not enough big even if resolution seems ok 2) Apple Studio Display is not enough big by 27 inch and not cheap 3) Apple Pro Display XDR enough big and having most advanced features ever but no one can afford to buy that

2 years later, gret review. I'm in a spoiled brat mode, thanks for talking back from the ledge. I might just stick to Studio Display... unless you wanna give me your shattered XDR? XD! even then, I can't even justify that either, i don't even sub you lol this is the first video I've come across from you but will sub now :)

I wish apple created a display that is basically the m1 iMac but no chin, and 1440p instead of 4K to get the price down. An apple budget display would be super popular it would be like a modern equivalent of the Thunderbolt display

I would choose the design of the Pro Display XDR in the size of the Studio Display at the price of the iMac. 😎
