If I didn't already have the LG 5K I would definitely choose the Studio display. However, I don't think the Studio 5K is enough of an upgrade over my LG 5K to justify the purchase.

Right on! Not enough to update. I’ve heard that Apple might release a Pro version of the Studio Display which could potentially have Pro Motion with higher refresh rate and HDR. That one seems more of a justifiable upgrade over the LG 5K.

Nice Review! I liked how you went into many different aspects and showed now overall the Studio display is simply a superior product. What I would also note is one reason the images look so nice on this (and pretty much all Apple displays) is the work they put into calibration and custom drivers. Plus this thing even has an SOC (A13) in it for DSP and other such things.

Listened to the studio… the screen being lower over the desk, i was utterly put off by how the sound felt totally directional, feeling ‘trapped’ below … down facing speakers felt real bad to me. In the end, i found that screen to be ‘shit value’ for money: years old panel .. cannot daisy chain several (cannot work on single screen) … speakers are pretentious enough to clain ‘best in class’ but not good enough to be used daily (i checked)… mediocre, at best, webcam … ridiculous cable (yesterday i moved my screens again and was glad i could remove the cables in the process) … cant move the screen at $1600, and it is too low for me … limited connectivity

@@Alperic27 All very good points, but honestly when buying Apple computers, buy all the Apple accessories. You'll have less issues to worry about. Bad audio can be resolved by getting true external speakers. Just my opinion. Yes, Apple's stuff is very expensive, it's a money grab, no doubt about it, but Apple's technical support is excellent. In my experience, everythjng works with everything… and when i did get issues, it was more apple not working with apple, usually during the vxxx.0 cycle, which apple usually fixed in vxx.1 or at times vxx.2 … so again, the ‘all apple’ is not my thing. And because i dont do utube vids, I am super happy with the screens I get, even without speakers. MaX, keep knocking out good videos. Hey, by the way, found out from trial and error that the studio display will work with a PC as well that has a USBC connection, but not Thunderbolt. With a USBC connection, you will be able to use the awesome speakers, camera without the Center stage feature and mic so everything works flawlessly. You will need to connect it to a Mac to adjust brightness and instal Firmware updates. When connecting it to a PC with Thunderbolt, you will only get a picture.

I liked the fact that you brought some light to this display despite the popular trend, but sadly I cant really agree on it being acceptable. One would expect some improvement from a display that came 6 years ago, but a similar pricetag to say the least. Although it does indeed have several improvements to the LG, theyre heavy dealbreakers like the non removable cable, or lack from a decent stand that can honestly turn a decent display into a shame of nowaday's displays. Youre paying way more than a display that came 6 years ago, and getting minor improvements with mayor dealbreakers.

I disagree. I think the Studio Display has a lot of features that distinguish it, if you're using an Apple computer. If your work relies on accurate colors, the Studio Display will pay itself back in no time. I don't have $1600 to spend on a display, so the Studio Display is out of the question. I am looking for a 5K display, so, naturally, I'm considering the LG Ultrafine 5K. However, I can't tand the wobbliness and subpar build quality. You may feel ripped off by the $1600 Studio Display, but I would feel ripped off by a $1000 display that's made out of plastic and wobbles like that. I think a $1000 display should have great build quality. Especially since it was released at $2500. $2500 for plastic that wobbles like that? That's a ripoff in my book. I'm a hard typer, and I also write a lot behind my desk. I've been using two LG UltraGear monitors for the last few years, and I absolutely hate the wobbling when I'm writing. I could, of course, invest in a sturdy Vesa mount that doesn't wobble, but that's expensive as well. Everyone values different things, so whether a price tag is worth it, depends on those things. We should accept that.
@jambononi
@jambononi 8 ай бұрын
@@ThomasVanheldenjust buy a normal mount that bolts to your desk. It's ridiculous to have wobbling monitors when a perfectly sturdy arm can be bought for £50. Clamps and bolts are very basic technology. Also five years ago a 5k monitor was really extravagant because they had to invent it and create an entire new product. It's all about the screen. Now it's much cheaper. Very few companies make 5k monitors.
@ThomasVanhelden
@ThomasVanhelden 8 ай бұрын
@@jambononi What you call "perfectly sturdy" wouldn't qualify as sturdy in my book. I've owned many monitors over the years, and I've always been annoyed by the wobble when I write and type. Granted, I'm a rough writer and typer. The Studio Display is the first display I've ever seen that doesn't wobble, even with my rough writing and typing. Even if you were to invest $300 in a premium monitor arm that genuinely doesn't wobble (even in my book), it would still look nowhere as elegant as the Studio Display Stand. It would ruin the entire aesthetic. Also, every time I would want to adjust it, I would have to mess with clamps and bolts. Ugh... I also move my display around quite often between my office/study and my living room table. I can't install an arm on my living room table, so I do need the display standard. I believe a discussion like this lies at the root of the difference between Apple and non-Apple consumers. I think Apple users care more about details and aestethics than non-Apple users do. To each their own, as far I'm concerned.
@jambononi
@jambononi 8 ай бұрын
@@ThomasVanhelden I am an apple user. It just doesn't really make sense that you would opt for years to have something that wasn't functional at all for your use but then paint this picture of aesthetic and Apple users etc. But as long as you're happy now with the apple monitor. Didn't mean to get in your face about it or anything.

This is such a useful review! Thanks! So if it picks up KZbin HDR, it will also be able to do Netflix’s Dolby Vision (which is gorgeous on my MBP)? I have the exact same thoughts as many others. There is just not enough of a difference to make the move from my existing 3 LG 5K monitors to the new Apple Display. The camera really needed to be so much better. I rarely use the internal speakers so that made no difference. And while the 600 nits brights is nicer, so far professional looking to use this monitor for color accurate grading are out of luck with this monitor. Just like the Apple Pro Monitors. It's a great monitor...just not a pro-level monitor.

I'm really surprised how nice the Panel is having no local dimming, I think the difference in the comparison is that the Studio lets you use HDR meta data. Gonna clip details in dark but damn that is a huge difference, actually impactful though I'd recommend a OLED at these prices base on the display alone but the webcam, speakers, mics, all add up and it kinda makes sense why it cost more but I would like to see a version without all these extra stuff. I can see them switching this monitor to OLED in a few years because thats where the industry is heading with QD already brining the price lower than highend MiniLed

I have a Dell 27" 4K monitor and it's pretty weak compared to my 27" iMac. The 27" iMac display has 2x more resolution (5K is twice 4K) and while that isn't a huge issue it is noticeable. But also, the colours and accuracy of the iMac is way better and more consistent. I went through 4 of the Dells (their best 4k panel) and all of them had issues with the colour temp not being uniform.

Man, I want to invest in a monitor that will give me proper HDR, at this point. With the advent of Samsung's QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) panels and a lot more bright miniLED panels coming, yes the Studio Display is amazing in so many other ways but I don't think it will last more than 3 years at most on me before I start wanting the shiny new thing again, because of the lack of 'proper' HDR. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Watching this on my 2017 iMac 5K with the Rec 709-5 profile, the Studio Display seems to be way too dark with too much contrast. It turned the green grass black at around 8:10 although it does seem to preserve the highlights better. Switching to the built in sRGB profile improved things only slightly. Maybe this is just a result of the camera exposing for the LG and is a case where you can only fully appreciate the SD in person. My only negatives for the LG are the WB is too green and it's slightly more reflective. Speakers and data throughput are pluses for the Studio Display but I'm not convinced enough of its overall worth to buy it.

Brightness doesn't effect the need for a matte coating. Dark mode, for example, becomes a mirror if you have bright lights or a window in front of the screen. Right? Is it worth $2300 when adding the matte coating along with height adjustable stand? What's the competition at that level?

Nice video! I think the only reason for an owner of the LG 5K to be wanting to upgrade is - apart from the colour accuracy out of the box (but perhaps some calibration could help the LG 5k close the gap) - the fact that - allegedly - you can run the Studio Display in portrait mode (whereas the LG has a lot of issues). Maybe also the nano texture upgrade could help in particular situations. Of course if one has the dough, then by any means upgrade regardless!

All standard Mac Display stands are Vesa capable, all they require is a drill, and tap. I have altered imacs since 2005 to use vesa. And the still attached foot is handy for storing the keyboard or a drive up off the desk. The engineering skill level to achieve this is beginner. The only thing to know is that the aluminium Apple uses work hardens so, drill with confidence, not slowly. A backing piece of wood will help avoid shrapnel capture in the hinge. Mask tape the hinge just in case while your drilling and tapping. The cost of the mod is about $20 for the tap, and the cost of the drill and bit, both of which can of coarse can be used elsewhere for other projects. Best thing is the original Mac stand is still attached for non vesa use.

I have both displays, and something I noticed last night is that the LG display viewing angle is total trash (more noticeable in the dark) compared to the Studio display, which was virtually unchanged at any angle. On the Ultrafine 5K, it blots out pretty heavily if you're not sitting directly in front of it. I haven't seen any reviews mention this yet, but it's a major differentiator. Max, you might want to take a look at this and update your video if possible.
