With the unveiling of Apple's new 27-inch 5K Studio Display earlier this month, it immediately drew comparisons to LG's similar UltraFine 5K display that's been on the market for a number of years.
The LG display is $300 cheaper than the Studio Display, and while availability has been spotty, LG says it will continue to be available, so we decided to compare the two displays to determine which is a better value.

How is super low light brightness (in the dark room with no other lights)? I would also love to hear experience from LG UltraFine owners. Issue, I have with my iMac is that when it is night, the fully dimmed screen is too dark but adding single small increment to brightness makes screen just way too bright.

Have had less than a day with my new setup that replaced my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014). I now have a MacBook Air M1 chip with 8‑core CPU, 7‑core GPU, and 16‑core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory, 2TB SSD storage, CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock, and a LG Ultra HD 5K Ultra Slim 27MD5KA-B Monitor on a desk VESA arm.. Like the way to many times I have moved to a new host system over the many decades spend most of the time with transfer of data. Setup of programs you use. Then trying to get it to look how you want. Now from the GC looks of things the LG 27MD5KA-B flat matte black is a look I love. Also I would have purchased the Apple Studio Monitor if I had been able to have it shipped for pickup at the Apple Store the same as the MacBook Air. Have lived in my personal home host system since the Intel iMac first came out. We will see how long this LG monitor does the job for me. Thing is I use things until they are obsolete, or die. Down the road more than likely purchase whatever Apple Monitor they have at that time unless they stop making them yet once again. Some people do not like the Apple garden. Thing is I want KISS, and something that works every time I go to use it. Love it when young people talk about the cost. Apple Mac Studio, Studio Monitor in my configuration would've cost me $4,198.00 which is less than my original Macintosh purchased in 1984 at $2,500 when adjusted for inflation would be $6,764.87 on the introduction date of the Apple Studio lineup. Thing is as a normal just do not need all that power, and I live in the consumer desktop part of the grid.

Well, I already bought a Studio Display as it was available to pick up on the first day at my local Apple Store. I told the guy who organised the pick up that I really wanted an iMac 27 inch with Apple silicon to replace my 2012 iMac 27 inch but sadly it doesn't look like it's going to happen. I already have a MacBook Air M1 and the Studio Display price is well below what Apple would charge for a 27 inch iMac with the same processor and storage as my MBA. I agree with everything in the review except possibly the webcam part - blowing up a 1080p imsge to 5K is bound to cause issues. My limited experience of one Zoom meeting is all I can go on but my picture definitely looked better on the Studio Display than it did using the MBA webcam. The stand height is just plain wrong, but that also applies to my iMac stand. Currently, it's sat on top of a fat Red Hat Linux book while I wait for a monitor riser to arrive. Take it from me - I used to do risk assessments on workstations and most needed extra height to help avoid neck strain. Apple has been making the same mistake since the original iMac, believing that tilting the screen is all that is needed.

Why U2723QE is better? - IPS Black panel with doubled contrast ratio. - More and superior ports as USB hub. (I think 27UP850 only supports 4K60Hz with USB 2.0 speed?) - Built-in power supply. - Slightly more DCI-P3 coverage (98% vs 95% of LG) - Better design (to my eyes - not a fan of LG's curved base). - Displayport chaining and KVM (in case I need to use it with PC) Why 27UP850 is better? (and why they don't matter as much to me) - 96w power delivery over USB C (compared to 90w of Dell) - the difference is really small. - AMD Free Sync - I don't game. - Built in speaker - I heard quality is mediocre.

Thanks for the great description/comparison of both these 5K Monitors I have a 5K iMac and a LG 5K Ultrafine. From your comparison, it does well appear that the new studio display is an improvement in the viewing experience and in microphone and sound quality, compared to the LG, although how many people really use their monitors speakers for music? I sure don't. Video chats for sure. My issue here is that we appear to be stuck at a 27" form factor and 5K for 6 years. In reality the Studio Display is a modest upgrade compared to the LG and compared to a 5K iMac even less so. What would people say if 4K TV's were the same form factor as 6 years ago and now people paid more for them? In my view the Apple Pro display should be 8K and 40" for the price and the new studio display should be the 32" and 6K display.

I haven’t received my studio display just yet but you have confirmed for me that these are not quite apples to apples (did I really just write that?). I will be using both the LG and the studio display for my dual monitor setup and I’m thrilled. The LG is indeed a great alternative to the studio display. @fmarinosfromafar9512
@fmarinosfromafar9512 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's definitely a good option as long as you find one in decent condition. I use my 2011-built TB Display for image and video editing and the picture quality is great - it's just not retina. With the ethernet & other ports on the back (as well as the Mag-safe power cable that fits my soon-to-be-updated 2015 15" rMBP), when the panel finally died a year and a half ago, the best option to replace it I could find was to actually buy another 27" LG LCD panel from China and install it myself. $300 and a pita, but I wouldn't have been happy with the other options, even if newer and 4K (and $200-400 more). The new Studio Display looks like an excellent revision of the TB Dislay - to me the price difference ($999 vs $1600) is understandable considering the 5K panel and being 6 years later, and that the wobbly LG 5K is still around $1200 new (I wouldn't take a chance with a 2nd hand one of those). It's a significant outlay though, here the new one is $2500 - so I'm hoping my TB display with the new panel keeps going for a few more years. As long as it doesn't die in the same year I need to upgrade an MBP, I'd seriously consider a Studio Display - especially as I'd expect to get near to or more than 10 years out of one.

I just recently bought a used 27" Cinema Display (basically identical to its replacement, the Thunderbolt Display, except for connectivity), and honestly it's great. It may be old, and it may not be 4K or 5K, but it's nice and large and looks beautiful. Right now I'm using it with the 2010 Macbook Pro I've had since it was new,. Assuming it still looks good and works well with the Mac Studio I have coming in next week, I'm considering buying a second of the same monitor.

In Europe things are even easier. The Apple is 2239€ here (with adjustable foot and matte coating, a bare minimum configuration IMO). You can buy much other displays for that. The only thing that would legitimate a resolutiion like this is 4K video edits, so what about refresh rates? Does the Apple work at say 23,976Hz? 50Hz? 71,928 with black frame insertion? You are probably much better of with a freesync 4K screen as videographer.

What us mini users wanted was a "pro mini machine". And this is it. iMac isn't appealing to me. Hard to see value in a screen attached to a computer that I cannot upgrade independently. I had seen the comments in other reviews about the stupid power cable. My question is, unless it's broken, why are people obsessed with wanting to remove it? You plug it in to a power source and most people leave it at that. Who cares how it's attached? You don't want the mag safe because then you're stuck with a power brick. And I understand why you couldn't put a standard power cable on it. The display is not thick enough to support that without bulging it out of the back, which in turn could create other issues. But overall, great review and comparison. Thanks!

What if it's not long enough? That can cause some issues for people's setups, especially in some U.S states where extension cords/power strips are (allegedly?) somewhat unsafe due to poor regulation. Also, if you ever move, you won't be able to plug the Mac in directly to the wall. The same also applies for internationally shipped items, and I know that I have to ship internationally a lot because I don't live in the US/EU. It's an important thing to point out, because some people *need* to know about it.

@@d-o-n-u-t US States don't typically regulate that sort of thing. They are regulated at the federal level. Everything must comply with electrical code. There is literally no difference between putting the monitor on an extension cable or having a longer power cable. Why would a company engineer an option for the one in a million scenario? It's not financially feasable or smart. Many products have power cords that are non-removable. It's not an issue 99.9999% of the time. I don't understand the rest of your argument. I got my firmware update in less than a week after delivery. Much better quality. A $300 difference. Anyone choosing the LG knows the price difference, but not the value difference. Complaining about the cord not easy to remove is like complaining their car’s transmission is not easy to remove. A non-issue.

You purchase a monitor for display not speakers ! I got an 27 LG ultrafine 27 for $ 1100 inclusive of tax for my macbook pro M1 also own a LG 32 UN 880-B that you reviewed sometimes back plus a MacMini M1 for speakers I prefer stand mount Kef 50W wireless pretty satisfied with my present setup . would not buy the studio display for speakers or a webcam would prefer other outside options for professional work

The LG monitor is 300 USD less. For an additional 300 USD, you get rid of the wobble, you’re given the better camera (I thought the ASD camera was bad until I saw the LG one 😂), a better mic and better speakers. Ah, yes, you also get rid of the plasticky look.

You’re such a nice guy… You said all the terrible things about LG in such a nice way… Let me rephrase for you… For me personally, the LG monitor is a piece of crap. Plastic crap. Yes the picture quality is okey-dokey… And if you’re an amateur or just doing amateur work the LG monitor is perfectly fine. If you are somewhat of a professional and you’re making good money… You definitely want the Mac monitor. $400 more is not a lot of money for a monitor that will last you a long time and better in every possible way. And I did notice you mention that some people don’t care what the monitor itself looks like, meaning the enclosure, but that’s because they have no sense of the aesthetic. The Mac monitor is absolutely gorgeous, I’m talking about the casing now… And certainly worth an extra $400. And lastly… I have no idea why anybody has a problem with a cord that doesn’t come out. Why do you need to take it out..? I’ve had the iMac Pro for the last four years and I never had a problem with anything. You can always go buy a cheap consumer monitor and push the cord in and out all day long if that makes you happy.

More money, 6 years later, for basically the same panel. People will try to justify it by saying there isn't any competing products. That is only because Apple is the only company that decided to go with 5K resolution. Just go with a 4K monitor and you can save like $1,000.

Focusing on the display panel in isolation, the two are quite comparable. 5k 500 nits v. 5k 600 nits is noticeable, but not so much to justify a swap (if you already have the LG). However, thats where it ends ... EVERYTHING ELSE IS SUPERIOR FOR THE STUDIO DISPLAY ... build quality, stability, microphone, speakers, tech inside - Apple will fix the crappy initial WebCam quality!!! So, if you are making a purchase decision, go with Studio Display no question. But, if you have the LG, you would not get a return on buying the Studio Display for $1600 and then selling the LG for what would be about $750 on the used market (current eBay selling price, even after release of Studio Display). I have the LG, and will be adding the Studio Display for primary monitor (w/ a new Mac Studio) and to the side will be LG as second display for a "Dual Display Lifestyle". Thats my view.

How pathetic; Having to compare a new Apple $1,500 monitor to a six-year-old LG. There is a HUGE issue with the MAC Studio Monitor with regard to "Color Calibration". The brightness controls are grayed out and not accessible from a range perspective during calibration and also once the calibration is completed on ALL but one profile that comes with the computer. Let's say you're using the X-Rite which is a standard for many professional photographers. If you even go so far at to put in your X & Y factors for your white point, you'll notice that getting to the 80-120 ranges for brightness is impossible. You get numbers up in the 400's if you're lucky. I real Standard mich be starting at a 65 preset so "Photographer (P3-D65)" is a prime example. Some have said to copy the (P3-D65) rename it and then modify it. Well I did that and it didn't work right out of the box and then I 'm saying to myself, why anm I doing "work arounds" on a brand new $1,500 monitor??? Some have said that they have renamed the settings an and got it to work. One person did this but when they rebooted their machine, the brightness was off again. I can't imagine being in the middle of workflow for a client, and for ANY reason at all you have to recalibrate your color space. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON. As of August, there was another brightness issue with the monitor and Apple says they fixed that one in the next firmware update about 4-5 months later. Well, if you own a new MAC Studio Monitor, and these issues are not resolved, you not only don't have a working monitor but you can't return it!!!!! Apple also had issues with the speakers (audio) and lackluster performance with the webcam. This is an indication of the overall quality of this product. WHAT ELSE is wrong. And as for the speakers, based on the marketing hype I was expecting this "AMAZING DIFFERENCE" from an old 5K iMAC. Side by Side, the sound of the old iMAC was better in my opinion. The MAC Studio Monitor has bugs and is not what it is HYPED to be. 95% chance... Mine is going back. I've been on the phone with Tech support at Apple for over a week and no fix yet. They want me to wait another week. My work is compromised so I'm editing on my old 5K iMAC form 2017. Aghhhhhhhhhhh.

Apple Displays were so ahead of the industry, and to keep the same amount of leading, this one should be launched with mini LED 1600 nits HDR. But they chose to stay on the same old ground. And a sad and cruel truth is - this is still one of the best panels, after about 10 years. Shame on the display industry.
