Got this from Pimax on Sep 7th: Pimax Store Hi, Super Micro-OLED is now expected to start available next year. The Micro-OLED display is still under development and continuously testing. Please wait for our next announcements

Ah, good to know. They must have pushed it back. It always seemed a tad ambitious.

The maths doesn't add up for the PPD for the Super over the AVP. I was able to test the AVP and it's beautifully clear and certainly bright enough. The 34 PPD was great however for VR users, I would be a little dissapointed because the FoV seemed incredible small, almost first gen VR. Compared to my also Pancake Quest 3, is seemed like for me the Quest 3 was around 110 degrees horizontal and the AVP was no more than 100 degrees horizontal. With that in mind, the pixel increase of the Super doesn't appear to justify the additional PPD given the FoV is rumoured to be around 130 degrees. The PPD of 50-57 just doesn't make any sense, they simple don't have enough pixels to play with.

I hear what you're saying, so it will be interesting to see how the actual experince plays out one it is released, but they're claiming it to be the case. Maybe it's something to do with only having one glass lens (as opposed to layers), so more picture gets through to the eye. But they are touting a big step up in visuals, so they need to deliver now.
@PixelZoftАй бұрын
There’s no need to speculate since you can calculate the PPD quite easily. Here’s how: The new Pimax headset has 3840x3840 pixels per eye and a 130° field of view (FOV). With an overlap of about 105° (this is an estimate based on the average of existing head sets) each panel covers 117.5° (since 12.5° on each side is not shared between the eyes). To calculate PPD: PPD = 3840 pixels / 117.5 degrees ≈ 32.7 PPD. So the PPD is about 32.7, which is far from the 50-57 PPD Pimax has stated. This is however still very good and a realistic value given the 3840x3840 resolution and the 130° FOV.

@@PixelZoft Great post! Will be very interested to see how they intend to hit their advertised target given what you've just detailed!!

@@PixelZoft So why is the advertised PPD more than the calculations?

The main difference is that the Super does not exist as of Sep and there is no way we are getting it in Q4.

Well, until they say different, that is their expected release date. We'll have to wait for confirmation

@@motivatedtravel Where does Pimax state that the Super Micro OLED is shipping in Q4? Did you see their last update?

Probably will be more useful to compare all these headsets when you actually get to try one out. The Pimax Super(s) won't even be available until later this year, maybe early next yer. Hopefully Pimax will deliver on it's promises.

For sure. But I've got a feeling a stack of the initial stock will go to pre-orders. Plus, people can buy an Apple Vision Pro now and may want to hold-off if the Crystal Super sounds of interest. Hence firing this off now, ahead of reviews to come.
@tomc13803 ай бұрын
@@motivatedtravel Ya, I’ve preordered a Super OLED so I guess I’ll eventually find out myself. I currently don’t have any interest in the current AVP. Maybe with their next, lower priced version?
@motivatedtravel3 ай бұрын
@@tomc1380 Not like Apple to do a lower-priced version, lol. We'll see. Probably a lot of room for the hardware to come down in price over the coming years.

"3840x3840 is almost 4k per eye" - actually, its 1.8x 4K per eye. Almost twice 4K per eye!
@motivatedtravel3 ай бұрын
Talk me through that one. Because 4K is technically 3840 x 2160?

@@motivatedtravel the video said 3840x3840 is almost 4K - i guess as I am typing it out i can see how it could have meant as saying ABOVE 4K, so its almost. as in you almost got the job but you were over qualified. but in normal language when someone says 'almost' it means 'not quite'. as you already said 4k has vertical of 2160 and 3840 is 1.8x that. So i wouldnt say 3840x3840 is 'almost' 4K - it is 4K and then some.
