I always had a theory that the 1% battery life was that it was more a of psychological trick on the users. Naturally, the iPhone doesn't want to run it's battery out and die, so it "tricks" the user into thinking they have 1% when really they may have +-5%. This will discourage the user from using the phone until they can at least plug in for a little top-up and avoid completely dying. The explanation in this video makes much more sense, but I have a feeling my theory may not be far off. I know that I'm definitely less inclined to even check my lock screen for the time if I know I'm on 1%.

Apple also explained many years ago that their algorithm "mask" the higher 5% and lower 5% of battery capacity as the phones and computers will cycle through very small charges and discharges to maintain battery health when plugged, and people would tend to think there's a problem with the phone it it went from 100% to 95% while plugged in. For the lower part, it was also due to batteries really not liking being fully discharged. Indicating the 1% level sooner that expected would push people to recharge earlier, thus effectively preventing some of the battery decay.

It's a complete scam as evidenced by you can see the time taken to drop from 100 to 99 is way longer than from 99 to 90 when doing the same task

Here’s a funny thing. Why does your phone run slower in the cold? I remember one time I accidentally left my android Samsung phone in the car and it was like freezing temperature. I went out there and I feel like the apps were slow to load and definitely the movement on the screen was very slow and blurry but I chalked that up to being liquid crystal display

I think it could be the same but for the opposite reason, hence when the SoC is over heating... I'm no engineer but I guess they must be kept at steady temperatures to work at the best conditions. My S9+ battery is almost screwed and sometimes I would go out to take my dog and it would be like 70% and when I get back home that the temperature goes up again (outside is very cold) my phone would go from 70% to 10% or even to turn off, I don't know why that happens because I stay outdoor for like 30-40 minutes and according to this video I should have more battery left because the cold would make some of my battery unavailable until it gets warmer again, but when I connect it to the charger it starts charing from 0% and takes the usual time to go back to 100%, so the opposite happens and I don't really know why, I guess it's due to the rapid temperatures shift, but the reason why that happens is unknown to me.

My guess is that the coldness drains the battery so your phone starts running slower, making performance to a crawl, so it can save the battery the most it can. Sometimes my phone does that in the cold as well.

One time in the US my mum was using her iPhone 7 to get back to the apartment we were renting. So we had gone to a new place and didn’t know the directions back. I had been using her hotspot and the iPhone went from 20 to 3%. With my casual disregard for getting home in one piece I continued to use the hotspot. My mum noticed when it was at 1% percent and took it from me super stressed we were going to get lost. That 1% lasted the 45 minutes it took to get back along with the GPS on and was still on when she got it to charger.

I think it’s mostly a software tweak. If you restart the battery can go drastically up or down, without touching a charger! They doing this when you put the device under stress, for example multiple apps installs, or an heavy game, so that if it turns off suddenly you wont be surprised!

If you wanna keep your battery health up allowing your battery to last longer / more years keep your charge level between 20-90% . Use low power / power saver @40% or lower. Lithium based batteries will last way longer used like this compared to running dry and juicing up to 100%.

Let me get this straight from the beginning, I respect you and the knowledge you provide is very enlightening. But I have a question that from what I know you haven’t touched on yet. Why does Apple make their phones so unfriendly to repair? They’ve made the inside so modular in design it should be simple, but no. They’ve gone as far too hard program the phone to shut down functions related to replaced parts not performed by Apple ( if you replace the camera you lose face unlock and other camera related functions until Apple clears it). Why is it that they actively go against right to repair laws? I’m interested to know your thoughts on this since they’ve been running into legal problems surrounding this very topic.

So it’s not a problem if you sometimes charge your phone even all the way up to 100%, but it’s better if you charge a little here and there, throughout the day. I have an external power pack, one that I always bring with me when I go out for trips longer than grocery runs.

Fun fact: Samsungs have a weird algorithm for calculations of batter life causing 0% to appear. This isn't even a bug as this will only appear when the phone is less than 1% (well no shit) or sometimes it's at 1% but can't calculate it right.

The majority of smartphones and laptops also use a thing called coulomb counting. Where the chip on the battery knows how much power the battery should be able to hold. It can measure the WH going in and WH going out. And have a pretty good guess of how much power is in the battery. They do use voltage too, and most cheaper devices (EG powerbanks) only use voltage. The most common reason for battery jump (EG when it jumps from say 80% to 50% in a very short time) is when the battery voltage curve does not match the WH amount the battery chip thinks it has. One thing which is always good practice if you are the type of person who always tops their phone up and never lets it get very low. Is do a full discharge and recharge cycle EG down until it turns off. And leave it on charge until its been sitting at 100% for at least an hour. This can help calibrate the battery chip. It is also a good idea to do a full cycle or two when a device is new. For the same reason to calibrate it.

slow app launching isn't an effect of the battery itself, it's likely the OS performing CPU clock slowdowns to, I guess preserve it and reduce heat. Also lithium batteries tend to drop in voltage faster around the high end, near 4.2 to 3.8v/cell, but seems to slow down as the discharge progresses. For most of the discharge the voltage is fairly constant, which can make it difficult to predict the battery percentage.

Once I was in a hospital with no charger on SE 1st generation. So I decided not to do heavy usage and kept it only for checking WhatsApp and emergency calling and it lasted from night to next day evening on 1% lol. Basically giving almost 18-20 hours on light usage. Crazy right? 😂

Very comd temperatures can really make it difficult to use devices with lithium batteries. As a passionated cyclist, I have 1 of 2 different phones attached to the handle bar on every trip I ride. While normally, phones sit in the snuggly warm pockets of their owners and stay warm, mine fully adapt the outside temperature, far below freezing point in winter. The cells behave so unpredictable at those temperatures, that it happened various times to me, that either of both phones could randomly shut off at 60%, because that capacity simply can't be taken out of the battery at such temperatures. When trying to turn it back on, it will show 0%. Once it warmed up again to room temperatures, the majority of that capacity can be used again and the phone turns on without charging. Due to those effects, in winter I usually charge those batteries fully up before going on a ride with the phone on the bar. On high charge levels, there are no issues. But below 50% at freezing temperatures, anything can happen. Since the battery can deliver far less power when verd cold, it even happened to me once while a video call, that everything glitched out in very funny ways. Because since the battery couldn't deliver a normal power level, the CPU didn't get enough juice and when rotating the screen (which needs extra processing), the phone would stutter like crazy and the audio would freak out, it was pretty funny. So even when having your phone in the pocket and temporarily using it in the cold, be careful when you don't have a high charge but need the phone. Sometimes when being out in the cold and every now and then taking the phone out of the pocket with something like 20%, several times the phone would suddenly be off when pulling it from the pocket again. Sure enough, above any temperatures, in which you don't need gloves anymore, the batteries work fine. In a hot summer, you might run into different issues, like the phone refusing to charge because it's too hot. Never leave your phone laying in the sun! It could die from it, and even blow up if you are unlucky.

My old iPhone 7 (still have it) sat at 7% for 4 hours once. I was stuck at a family friends house overnight because my sister and mom were at our company office until 4 am. Some creepy dude tried to break in too, my phone battery hung on for my mom to let me know it was dealt with and my sister was fine (she was in the building when he tried to get in my mom was getting something from her car.)

You are awesome bro but I have one confusion that my screen time on iphone13 pro max is around 12 hours eveyday just youtube, tiktok and chrome so I charge it always from 15%-99% once a day cause I don't want to waste time on charge so is this practice good?? Just to clarify I also have samsung s10+ so I should divide the usage time with both??

My question is I am using iphone se 2 generation . It’s been 5 months I am using this device and I saw that, when I unplug my phone after the charger ( At 86 % or 80 %) and after unplug I restart the my phone and I saw that charging percentage is increased by 5 % to 6 %, Why this is happening with my phone.
