The glowing apple logo actually had a functional upside as well. When the backlight on the screen would inevitably go out, you could shine a light through the apple logo to see if the screen was actually on, thus confirming the issue of a bad backlight.
@DiamandiL3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I used to do that all the time to diagnose screen issues. It also served as a way of telling if the computer was actually on, since Apple seem to have an aversion to indicator LEDs. Now with USB-C you cant even tell if the computer is charging or if an SMC reset was successful.

When first designing the device trying to create the best user experience ever, you think, logically, that the logo facing the user when they first get the device out of the box makes a lot of sense : after all, Apple's logo wasn't *that* well-known to begin with. The glowing logo was primarily “removed” as a by product of the higher efficiency backlight required for the Retina displays. Previous generation backlights had a white translucent back, but newer designs use a backlight with reflective layers to couple all possible light to the LC panel. This increase in efficiency resulted in power savings at similar brightness levels. This was critical in achieving the long battery life seen in the 2015 and later MacBooks. Retina displays are “hell” on battery life! The smaller pixels and narrow color filters (better color accuracy) decrease the amount of light that passes through the Liquid Crystal panel, thus requiring brighter backlights which require more power. The glowing Apple wasted light and cost precious battery life.

Given that they still show the illuminated Apple-logo-MacBooks within every keynote video (when they show customers using their product), I think Apple themselves still recognizes the value of the backlight and should strongly consider reintroducing this for their next-gen M2-powered MacBook Pro laptop line.
