If you’ve updated your iPhone to a new version of iOS and felt like it became slower, you’re not alone. Apple’s been accused of slowing down older iPhone models to get more people to upgrade, but that’s not actually what’s going on here.

I’m still on an iPhone 7. I had the battery replaced a year ago, and I make sure to leave at least 20GB of storage available. With these measures it continues to be pretty snappy, even on iOS 15.4.

Yes 20GB is a must have to be free! I have SE2 and when I’m on 10-15GB storage left it just feels a lot slower compared to when it has around 20GB~ free. Even tho I’m on 14.8.1 it still happens a lot.

The one good thing about these home button SE models, is that will likely help keep updates going for older home button devices like the 7 for many many more years. Though I did have a problem for like a year where my home button would hardly recognize my finger. It was real annoying having to punch in my code every time, though it's been working fine for 6 months now. Did you ever have that problem?

Actually, some people recommend you change the battery on your iPhone ever 30-36 months. Also, be aware that if you upgrade to a new iOS version, your phone may be "reindexing" certain code for a couple of days as a gets used to the new version of IOS, causing slowdowns. If you phone is still lagging after a couple of days, it may be time to get a new battery installed.

actually it doesn't slow down your iphone. new updates are always gonna include new features and new stuff so basically when you upgrade your phones is gonna use more of the CPU and ram because of the new features and new stuff that are running there for your phone gets a little slower every year. that's why apple releases new phones every year. so the updated processor could handle all the features in the software. if this is something you can't understand sorry your stupid. not just apple does this. every company that makes hardware and software is on the same boat. this is what exactly happens. it has nothing to do with what you read on the internet about codes my friend

I don't know if anyone is willing to buy iPhone batteries and then open up their iPhone to swap them that often. I mean, some people don't even upgrade the batteries in their smoke/CO detectors every 6 months as suggested and those batteries are super cheap and power a device that will literally save their life. Also I have tried to replace a battery in an old iPhone, not my main phone and found out it is hard to do. I screwed up somehow because the Touch ID stopped working. This is why people go to the Genius bar or just give up and upgrade their phone anyway.

Maybe instead of ‘your battery and hardware can’t meet the demands of newer operating systems’ it should be that newer operating systems don’t demand so much from your processor. I understand that technology progresses quickly, but it’s ridiculous that a processor made 3.5 years ago like the A12 Bionic would struggle to keep up with running iOS 15.

Unfortunately, Apple upgrades their chips heavily each year and chooses to create features that focus on those chips. The A12 Bionic CAN easily run those new features, it just requires the battery to not be degraded in the 80-85% range. Apple also doesn't want to dis-include those features for older phones, even if it means the slowdown exists for devices with a degraded battery.

This vid is stupid and incorrect and I worked at Apple fo 8 years. Because the devices should begin to struggle even on the same ios if the Battery degrades. Since it is a hardware related problem the new ”powerhunry ios” should only run the battery dry faster but not slow down performance. Why make an update available for older phones if its more ”power hungry/slowing down” in the first place? They want to sell. I lied, we all had to lie about it but we knew that the spftware was slowing down phones.

@@amarg1650 Your comment is stupid and incorrect and you are such a liar. If you were to work at Apple for 8 years, you would have a signed contract legally binding you against any claims against the company after leaving it. Also, the software was not slowing down phones. I had an iPhone 6s running iOS 15.2 and it was SLOW as hell. Until I replaced the battery. WHICH IS HARDWARE. Not to mention, there's no way you worked at apple when you misspelled the words: for, iOS, power-hungry, software, AND your grammar is not even functionally correct. Random capital letters in the middle of sentences, shortening the word video to vid, and in-fact, calling the video "stupid" shows not only that you have no etiquette, but it also shows that you're lying, psychologically. Not to mention, if you worked at Apple for 8 years, why are you here commenting on a KZbin video? You should be out relaxing and chilling at home, watching a movie with plenty of new technology with your huge employee discount, and you should probably also be working, or retired, since you have "Worked at Apple for 8 years" in your resume. + ratio + L bozo + cry about it

However I think he meant he worked in some Apple Store and madenit sound like he was an Apple engineer or something like that. In addition even if what he said doesn't make complete sense, it's still partially correct, why is Apple bragging so much about their OS support when most older iPhones (4+ years old) struggle to support latest updates? It's not just a matter of battery, they talk about OS support and then they say they roll out the updates only designed for latest SoCs, that's not really great OS support. If you can't provide a good experience to your order phones, don't support them at all. They sold iPhones with 16-32GB of storage till like 2016/2017 and they expect to still have space left to download the latest update, that's just plainly lying from Apple, nothing more than that.

@@c0d1ngclips25 Battery management is very complex, and becomes outright unpredictable when degradation of your battery starts to happen, especially in combination with the millions of totally different custom use(r) cases, as you are suggesting you would like to be possible. Apple simply can’t support all these scenarios. Literally: customer support would become extremely complex and expensive, just to cater the small amount of people that like to have a fine(r) level of control. On top of that; allowing for custom firmware and OS downgrades (in combination with ease of use) would effectively kill Apple's ability to keep its high level of security, privacy and long sustainability in check. Most people don’t think about this very often: but in essence; your phone holds your life. With that in mind I think one should look out for the ecosystem with the highest level of stability, privacy, security and ease of use. This ‘bundle’ can be very challenging and costly for tech companies to achieve & maintain. That’s what Apple excels at, and that’s what you pay for. (Although actually: if you play it smart, your TCO (Total Cost Of Ownership) within the Apple ecosystem can turn out to be significantly lower than the competition's.) But if you want a much higher level of control, while you know precisely what you’re doing, and you enjoy spending all the time it requires to stay safe and stable: maybe Apple is not your brand. For instance: A firmware flashed *FairPhone* could be a better option.

Diving deeper into this can cause some questions because voltage of a battery does decline over time but the processor works within a set parameter. My mom’s iPhone 6s is running on the latest version iOS. That’s 7 years of software support, I commend Apple on doing this. When we had her battery replaced it was pretty snappy like you said, although her battery levels have come down again but it’s still as snappy as my sister’s new Android phone and actually more reliable than that. I always knew that it was battery degradation and actually liked the fact that Apple slows down the phone if the battery has degraded badly, that way it won’t have a hard shutdown like other phones do when their battery is degraded. This was actually done in hopes that it would keep the phone running for longer with the same battery so Apple was actually trying to make the consumer retain the phone for longer not the other way around. Sadly they were accused for the opposite but in return we got more transparency for our battery health which is nice.

This is exactly right. I used to own many Androids before my iPhone 11 now. My Androids didn't have battery management so once my battery started degrading pretty bad, my phone would just crash, overheat, or shut off randomly and get in those nasty boot loops. Terrible. iPhones on the other hand gradually slows down while maintaining stability and reliability. I might replace my battery on my phone sometime this year. The iPhone 6S Plus is under iOS 15.4 painfully slow even with a brand new original battery. So the battery is NOT the reason! The hardware is to old…especially the lack of RAM is a problem in the long run…if you would get 12 GB RAM with you 13 Pro instead of only 6…it would last maybe 10 instead of 5 years…and the 2 GB of the 6S Plus…well…are good for nothing!

I’m getting the same performance I received when I first purchased said iPhone. But, I’ve yet to replace the battery in my iPad Pro (owned since late 2019), without any compromise in performance and that’s because an iPhone is used far frequently than an iPad. In case you guys are wondering why Android phones don't *mostly* encounter these issues, it's because you only get a max 2 versions from the factory version of Andrioid on your phone. Where as a iPhone 6 can run an OS 6 years later or more, not sure exact number. Like my mom's motorola came with andriod 8 and is stuck with andriod 9 with no newer updates (its a bit older one). and my dad's samsung that came with android 10 has android 12 but I doubt i'd get android 13

I noticed a massive slowdown when I upgraded my iOS to 15.4 and I have a habit of keeping phones forever. I still have my pink Razr flip phone. Why am I like this? I have an 11 and searched what settings to change to increase battery life. As long as my phone lets me play music while I work, then I’m happy. I don’t want to talk to people, I especially hate talking on the phone.

I have had my cuurent iPhone12 for 2 years now. I Kinda hope that the newest iOS updates don't throttle my device. I am not sure if I even want to upgrade to what Apple comes out with this fall, not that it will be bad but the iPhone 12 is still amazing even though its a few years old.

But I have decades as a Samsung user and I had that happen to me where I update and it runs like crap for a day or so with lag and overheating and horrible battery life but 2 days after the update has a chance to accommodate my phone it runs like normal again, runs cool and last all day with no lag

Had the same thing happen with my old iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. They became really slow with iOS 9, even if that version of IOS9 was stripped down to work on that low amount of ram and processing power. Even this iPhone 7 and iPad 5 I have now are getting a bit slow, which is why I’m not trying to upgrade to ios15

1:50 Battery replacements actually are not free with AppleCare+. They’re only free if the battery is faulty, not if they just degrade over time. I bought AppleCare+ with my 11 Pro Max back in 2019, and went to get a new battery in October 2021 because my AppleCare+ was about to expire and thought it would be free… I was denied because my battery wasn’t faulty, it had simply degraded.
