For viewers unfamiliar with the area, if you pause at 9:34 you can see Heathrow on the left hand side of the frame, and RAF Northolt (into which King Charles III flew, yesterday) just above the captain’s thumbnail view. And at 15:09, just when rolling out on the 115 heading, you can see the parched grass of White Waltham airfield at the bottom of the frame (the aircraft passes over its western edge), where I did my first solo many years ago! A shame you weren’t vectored a little further west over my house just north of Reading. Great video!

Superb! I particularly liked the fact that you resisted the temptation to 'fast forward'. To my mind, it's much more interesting seeing it unfold in real time, even if there are some 'boring' stretches. I'm also grateful to you for doing Heathrow from so far out as opposed to just the last few moments. Look forward to watching more of your videos and I would love to see more of Heathrow if that's possible. Thanks!

Thank you so much for watching and for you very detailed feedback! Whenever possible, I try to publish the video as the real time recording. Sure, once we had to wait at an airport for several minutes for a parking position and nothing happened. This is a reason to fast forward. In my opinion, the viewer should be the person who decides if she or he wants to move faster forward or jump right away to the final approach or landing. The last time I flew to LHR was the day I recorded this video. I hope to come back soon and would love to produce another one. Best would be one with an approach over the city. Have a great day!

I used to live at various places not far from Heathrow for years.I am so glad that I now live at the other end of the country! Really interesting to see a pilot's perspective of the area in which I used to live though. I still don't understand how you snatch the instructions intended for you from the ether when there are so many other pilots speaking and being spoken to all around you. And I still don't understand how you absorb instructions when they are given to you at such speed! That having been said, I suppose the important thing is that you and all the other pilots *do* pick out what you need and your aircraft stay up in the air as a result!
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for sharing your personal feedback! It sounds difficult to snatch the instruction for you out of all the radio calls. If you start as a pilot, it is for sure difficult. But after a few days of flying you are getting used to it. For us, we listen for Eurowings first and then we concentrate on the rest of the call sign. We also listen to the instructions for others to get a good picture of the situation around us.

As a Controller listening to the FO, his responses should have been the read back followed by the Callsign. His using the callsign at the beginning was a bit distracting. However I really love watching the flight deck videos, really helps show the other side.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos8 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and for sharing your good and interesting feedback! I understand your point and would like to explain, why pilots sometimes readback the callsign at the beginning of a response. If he or she is doing this, it is usually done for a "closed loop" communication: ATC instructs to fly a heading/speed/altitude ... Then the pilot flying dials the values into the flight management system. During this time, the pilot monitoring starts reading back the call sign. Once the values are set, the pilot monitoring is reading back the set values from the flight management displays. This makes sure that the values from the instruction are set properly. Because if they have not been set in accordance due to a misunderstanding or so, it will show up during the readback. Another option would be to wait with the readback until the values are dialed in. But this is sometimes not the best or fastest solution in high density traffic areas.

Thanks for watching and your feedback! The 160 knots at 4 nautical miles speed constraint is demanding, especially if your normal approach speed at that point would be much lower. During the approach in the video, we slowed down more than 30 knots over the short distance of just 1.6 nautical miles. The exact adherence of all the pilots to the speed constraints is the key for the maximum possible runway utilization.

Great video. I’m under the Lambourne Hold. (The Lambourne Hold is a little airfield called Stapleford Airodrome). They leave Lambourne either 265 for runway 09 or leave 270 for 27 left or right. It’s alternate some mornings they fly over for 09 other times flying over London sometimes doing a zig zig over before The City of London West End and seeing Buckingham Palace Not below 3,000 feet for a straight in approach. But at 3pm every day the approach and departure changes. There is also Biggin or Bovingdon holds.

Flown into Heathrow from both directions and yes, 09 is nice but I don't think you can beat an early morning arrival (middle of August) on 27R with the sun catching Tower Bridge, Houses of Parliament and the Millennium Wheel. Ace. Lovely orange glow reflecting off of it. Trouble is, whoever you fly with, you can't guarantee the weather or the direction for landing.

Thanks for your feedback! I 100 % agree and also want the ND (navigation display) in the videos. I try to find a solution. It may take some time. Currently, it is recorded together with the PFD. Due to the angle and reflections it is almost unreadable.

Thank you for watching and for the feedback! I also would like to have the ND in the videos. The camera which is currently taping the PFD is also recording the ND. But due to the angle and reflections, this ND part is not useable. I work on a different solution, but it is much more complicated than I originally assumed. Please stay tuned.

Hey, GREAT videos (I’ve become obsessed). I recently flew with Eurowings from DUS to LHR, when we landed, I noticed harsher braking than normal (you could hear the brakes, was what I would consider to be extreme braking action) - can I ask why this would be? Would the pilot be trying to make a certain turn off? If so, why is this? Amazing videos please keep it up!
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the good feedback! I only know exactly what happens if I am in the cockpit. So, I am unable to comment on the flight you mentioned.In general, pilots brake more than usually, if they want to make a certain exit. Or if the runway is short, wet ...
@henrikolsen52 жыл бұрын
Read back of ATC instructions is being done with call sign as the start here. I thought that would/should be at the end, like “descend FL100, eurowings 460”.
@ignacio444hd2 жыл бұрын
You are correct. When you answer to an atc call, callsign goes at the end. When you start the call then it goes at the front.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. In general, the callsign shall be included in the readback. FAA, EASA, UK and other countries are slightly different in the regulations and instructions, if it shall be at the end, at the beginning or if it doesn't matter. My impression, flying in FAA, EASA and UK airspace is that as long as you put your callsign in the answer, ATC will never complain. Away from that: To improve the safety of operation, sometimes it is much better for a crew to transmit the callsign at the beginning. Here is the reason and the ideal sequence of events: ATC gives the instruction to descent to a certain altitude or flight level, the pilot flying dials that into the flight management system. Then the pilot monitoring checks whatever had been dialed in and reads that altitude or flight level back to ATC. If the set altitude and readback is wrong, ATC will tell. Especially in high density traffic areas like London, ATC expects a very prompt reply. So if first the flight level is read back before the callsign, the flight level may not be be finally set by the pilot flying and instead of reading back the number from the flight management system he or she can just reply what ATC told before.
@henrikolsen52 жыл бұрын
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos That's a good point regarding the timing. To delay the readback ever so slightly by stating call sign first, to give pilot flying a little chance to catch up. Thank you for that insight.
@m3stu2 жыл бұрын
In the UK, the majority of operators will give their callsign at the end of the transmission as you said above. However, I have noticed German operators (namely Lufthansa and Eurowings) tend to say their callsign at the start of the transmission. I haven’t noticed any others do the same so far, not in the UK anyway! I assume airline SOPs may play a part in what order the pilots respond with their callsign.
@cdhagen2 жыл бұрын
@@m3stu To my knowledge, callsign first is how it's taught at the Lufthansa flight school. However, not all LH/EW pilots stick to it, so I doubt it's strictly mandated by the SOP.

Thanks for sharing, love your videos! I've noticed both of you resting your hands on your side sticks during approach, with AP still engaged. Is this standard procedure below a certain altitude?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! This is the ideal relaxed position for the arm. Guarding the sidestick enables the pilot monitoring to push the push to talk button of the radio, which is located on the sidestick, immediately. The pilot flying is enabled to switch off the autopilot immediately and continue with manual flying, if needed.

Thanks for the good feedback and your very good eyes. I even double checked the original video and observed the same. Speed and general appearance look to me like fast flying military fighter jets. But the strange thing is that they disappear from one moment to another. Maybe they used their afterburners or so. If somebody else has an idea what that is, please leave a comment!

Thanks for the great feedback! I also would like to see the ND in my videos. Until now, I did not find the right camera location which does not disturb the flight and gives a ND picture without reflections. The current PFD camera also records the ND, but due to the angle and a lot of reflections it is almost unreadable. I continue on that and hope to find a good solution for the ND in the future.
