@dalmo0012 жыл бұрын
It was unfortunate that their bay/stand was the furthest from the runway at the very northwest corner of the terminal. Usually there is also a prevailing wind into Manchester from the west, so usually 23R is used for landings and 23L for rolling takeoffs. 23R would have been closer and chopped taxi time by about 2 minutes.

it made me smile to see that the GS/PAPI discrepancy is not just a quite persistant bug in MSFS, but also occurs in RL ;)
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
This is normal at lots of runways. It is not a bug. It has to do with the location of the PAPI vs. the glideslope antenna. Also, it has to do with the general adjustment of the PAPI. Different aircraft types may have different viewing angles.

In regard to the autothrust: We can use it all the time, but we do not have to. So the pilot decides for the approach what he or she wants to do. If somebody wants to land with manual thrust, Airbus recommends to switch off the autothrust latest at about 1000 feet above the runway elevation. We for sure have to be proficient in flying with manual thrust and flying with autothrust.

Ive noticed all planes flying this approach turning left at DAYNE to UMKIL or WHI for runway 5R. Why is this not reflected in the charts? This makes more sense than going fro DAYNE to MCT then a bearing of 235 just to come back on yourself for the approach.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos3 ай бұрын
Sometimes, the standard published procedures do not make really sense in regard to efficiency and flight distance. Often, local ATC uses different procedures with radar vectors and direct to shortcuts. The standard procedures have to be used in case of a radio communication failure.

The glide path approach gradient and the PAPI gradient will always be different and can be determined by checking the relevant airfield lighting diagram. This copes when in the visual segment of different clearance criteria from close in obstacles between say A380 and A319. The PAPI will set for a value close to instrument approach path but gives the appropriate visual segment clearance for larger aircraft that operate from that runway. This can be referred to in the visual approach brief?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
Our charts state the PAPI angle and also the angle of the glideslope or the descent path for a non precision approach. Most of the time, the angle is the same. Sometimes there are small or large differences between the PAPI and the instrument approach glideslope. We always brief and discuss differences prior the approach. Small deviations between PAPI and glideslope are usually caused by the location of the PAPI vs. glideslope transmitter and the reference airplane for the setup. The result may be different TCHs (Threshold Crossing Height) when centered. During a visual approach, ILS glideslope or/and PAPI are good aids to help in situational awareness, but the main reference to stay clear of obstacles is the outside view.
@paulgeorge63533 ай бұрын
Stupid question maybe but do you get any feedback on the sidestick or is it just visual. I can understand how a wire connected yoke would try and fight the pilot but not an electronic input.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos3 ай бұрын
No feedback on the sidestick. They are only electronically interconnected in a way that the inputs from both pilot are added together. If one pilot steers to the right and the other to the left, the plane would fly straight and announce "dual input". The result is that always only one pilot should make inputs to the sidestick. If the pilot flying is incapacitated, the other pilot can use his or her take over pushbutton to disconnect the sidestick of the incapacitated pilot.

@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your question! You are correct. That's the point where I switched off the autothrust. The speed target which is displayed on the PFD still remained in the managed mode. But I had to move and adjust the thrust levers constantly to keep the actual speed at the managed speed target.

Weird question but does it help to have a left handed pilot and a right handed copilot?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I do not think that it helps a lot. Everybody starts flying in the flight school in the left seat. That means left hand for the steering horn and right hand for the throttle. Then everybody moves to the right seat with opposite controls. And then as a captain back to the left seat. Have a nice day!
@stuartg6965 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely fantastic approach and landing. Captain, may I ask under what circumstances would you choose a visual approach over an ILS? Or is this just the preference of the pilot in command.

Thanks for watching and the great feedback! A visual approach is usually shorter than the standard ILS approach. It saves flight time and fuel and reduces emissions. When the weather is good, we have the airport and other traffic in sight and the pilot flying wants to fly a visual approach, we ask ATC for a visual approach clearance. At very few airports, like Duesseldorf in Germany, visual approaches are not allowed for large airplanes.

Great video. When taxiing, how come the First Officer sometimes doesn’t sign off his readbacks with the callsign?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
As required, the callsign was included in all transmissions. Due to technical reasons, it may be difficult to hear/understand in one or the other transmission.

Fantastic video. Can I ask a question? Was watching the approach on the PFD and noticed from about 300ft to 200ft the aircraft appeared to go under the flightpath. At the end of the video / debrief, am I correct in saying the captain indicated a discrepancy between the instrument display and the PAPI? Is that common? If there is a discrepancy, do pilots trust PAPI before the aircraft instruments?

Thanks for watching and the great feedback! The glideslope from the ILS is only reliable if you are on the centerline of the localizer. As we were on the centerline of the localizer, the glideslope deviated a little bit from the PAPI. They are both calibrated by the authorities. We see small deviations between the 2 - like here - on a lot of approaches. There are many possible reasons like the difference in position between the PAPI lights and the glideslope transmitter on the ground, distance between glideslope airplane antenna and cockpit During an ILS approach (when on centerline), the glideslope is the main reference. During a visual approach, the outside view of the crew is the main reference. PAPI, DME, and glideslope may help for the situational awareness.

When receiving conflicting glide slope indications like you received on final, which do you trust more: The PAPIs or the G/S diamond on the PFD?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your question. As it was a visual approach, I decided to follow the PAPI and kept always 2 red and 2 white lights on final approach. The result was that the ILS glideslope was not always centered. But the deviations were only very small with about +/- one dot. Another option would have been to follow the glideslope as descent reference and cross check with PAPI. In general, the outside view is the main reference during a visual approach. Have a great day!

Why has the right hand pilot got his hand on the yoke as well?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your question. The first officers hand was on the stick for 2 reasons: The push to talk button for the radio is located on the stick. He was the pilot doing the communication with ATC. So he was always ready to answer an ATC call immediately. Also, the pilot monitoring needs to be able to take over the controls from the pilot flying at any time. For that reason, it is a good idea to have the hand at or near the stick. Have a nice day!

Nice approach and landing! If you'd taxied any further, you would have been in the car park.

Thanks for watching and your feedback! Yes, you are right. We taxied the maximum possible distance and stopped almost at the car parking lot.
