Eurowings Airbus A319 approach and landing on runway 05R at Manchester MAN / EGCC airport, England, UK. Cockpit, pilots, sidestick, PFD (primary flight display) and ND (navigation display) view. With cockpit audio. Captain is pilot flying and first officer pilot monitoring. ATC (air traffic control) callsign is Eurowings 8AJ (Eurowings Eight Alpha Juliett). Produced with 4 cameras in 4k quality.
This video was recorded prior to the introduction of my new cockpit camera setup configuration. Please excuse the quality of the instruments.

I had no idea Manchester airport was so big, I think that's the longest taxi I have seen. Will have to fly there in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Thanks for the upload. 🙂

It was unfortunate that their bay/stand was the furthest from the runway at the very northwest corner of the terminal. Usually there is also a prevailing wind into Manchester from the west, so usually 23R is used for landings and 23L for rolling takeoffs. 23R would have been closer and chopped taxi time by about 2 minutes.

it made me smile to see that the GS/PAPI discrepancy is not just a quite persistant bug in MSFS, but also occurs in RL ;)

This is normal at lots of runways. It is not a bug. It has to do with the location of the PAPI vs. the glideslope antenna. Also, it has to do with the general adjustment of the PAPI. Different aircraft types may have different viewing angles.

super video - thanks for sharing - MAN used to be my local airport - used to go plane watching in the 60's and 70's when you could actually walk out on the roof of the terminal piers... Love the place.

Another great upload! That PFD + ND view is amazing and makes a difference. Would it be feasibly to add EICAS and MCDU views in the future? But, as others stated, one of the best channels on YT. I admire your desire for manual flight. What is the criteria to select A/T off, when in manual flight? Everything about this channel is feast for aviation enthusiasts! Thank your time and effort.

Problem is: The recording is way more difficult as expected. And I do not want to overload the final picture. But I keep your suggestions in mind and see what I can do in the future. In regard to the autothrust: We can use it all the time, but we do not have to. So the pilot decides for the approach what he or she wants to do. If somebody wants to land with manual thrust, Airbus recommends to switch off the autothrust latest at about 1000 feet above the runway elevation. We for sure have to be proficient in flying with manual thrust and flying with autothrust.

ooh new channel to watch! Great approach and landing! But what is the broken blue circle on the PFD? It seems to intercept the rwy extended centre line. I haven't seen that on my A319 in XPlane. Nice also to see the full taxy in - I thought you were going to finish up on the car park it's so far away!

Thanks for watching and your friendly words! We entered 2 circles on the navigation display during the approach: One for the MSA at 25 NM distance. The other circle was for the visual approach. It showed the minimum distance from the runway at which we wanted to intercept the final approach track. Have a nice day!

Vielen Dank fürs Anschauen und das gute Feedback! Visual approache sind in Deutschland nur an machen Flugplätzen erlaubt. Und dazu kommen oft Einschränkungen, wie zum Beispiel eine minimale Länge oder Höhe für den Endanflug. Nicht erlaubt sind Sichtanflüge in Düsseldorf, Köln, München. In Berlin, Hamburg, Dresden ... gibt es Vorgaben. Wenn der Instrumenenanflug wegen Wetter bei 10 Meilen oder so nicht fliegbar ist, sind Sichtanflüge überall erlaubt.

That must have been an early morning flight - Manachester is normally much busier than that ! Landing on 5R you came in the "flat" way from the West - if you get a chance to film an approach from the East onto 23R you can get good views as you fly over the Pennines - which is the nearest to a mountain range that Engand has got to offer ! Great landing, by the way!

@@cunnerzzz Me too. I'm in Hyde and that's circa 12 miles to touchdown. So, they are circa 3,600' above us as they turn Final. On a still day, we get the wake turbulence (particularly from a SUPER) after they have passed overhead.

The pilots had a good job.. Sometimes it.s very hard after landing go to stand, in Spain some Airports have signalman and it.s very easy follow them to the stand. 👍✈️🚖

Yes, we have a great job! I completely agree! Some airports provide a follow me car from the runway to the parking position. But the number of airports doing that are geting less and less. Especially a lot of larger airports changed to the automatic guidance systems at the gates/stands and use follow me cars and marshallers only as a backup or additional help.

Thanks for watching and the great feedback! A visual approach is usually shorter than the standard ILS approach. It saves flight time and fuel and reduces emissions. When the weather is good, we have the airport and other traffic in sight and the pilot flying wants to fly a visual approach, we ask ATC for a visual approach clearance. At very few airports, like Duesseldorf in Germany, visual approaches are not allowed for large airplanes.

Fantastic video. Can I ask a question? Was watching the approach on the PFD and noticed from about 300ft to 200ft the aircraft appeared to go under the flightpath. At the end of the video / debrief, am I correct in saying the captain indicated a discrepancy between the instrument display and the PAPI? Is that common? If there is a discrepancy, do pilots trust PAPI before the aircraft instruments?

Thanks for watching and the great feedback! The glideslope from the ILS is only reliable if you are on the centerline of the localizer. As we were on the centerline of the localizer, the glideslope deviated a little bit from the PAPI. They are both calibrated by the authorities. We see small deviations between the 2 - like here - on a lot of approaches. There are many possible reasons like the difference in position between the PAPI lights and the glideslope transmitter on the ground, distance between glideslope airplane antenna and cockpit During an ILS approach (when on centerline), the glideslope is the main reference. During a visual approach, the outside view of the crew is the main reference. PAPI, DME, and glideslope may help for the situational awareness.

Great video. Did you disengage ATHR by moving the throttle back at 7:47 ? Also, can you still have the speeds in managed mode or do you manage the speeds using throttle? Thanks

Thanks for watching and your question! You are correct. That's the point where I switched off the autothrust. The speed target which is displayed on the PFD still remained in the managed mode. But I had to move and adjust the thrust levers constantly to keep the actual speed at the managed speed target.

Thanks for watching and for your question! I always try to figure out in my brain how long the remaining flight distance is and compare that to the altitude we have to get rid until touchdown. Ideally, we follow a 3 degree path. The correct rate to follow that path is about groundspeed x 5 or groundspeed half. For example, if we fly 200 knots GS, we have to descent with 1000 FPM to stay on a 3 degree path. If I see that we are higher than the 3 degree path, I can extend the approach (more miles) or use speedbrakes / flaps / landing gear to increase the descent rate. Once on final approach we cannot fly more distance but the other options are still available. The position of the base turn varies depending on how high we are and what method I would like to use to get rid of altitude. In addition, we have to comply with local restrictions for visual approaches. Have a good day!

Thanks for watching and your question. Due to the bad recording angle, parts of the FMA indications are not visible in the video. The upper FMA line is almost completely missing. If you monitor the audio closely, you can hear what is missing as I call out all the FMA indications. The FDs were switched off for the visual approach as I said "FDs off". The autothrust was on for a little longer, but then also the autothrust was switched off. After that all FMA indications were off during the rest of the approach. Have a great day!

Awesome video! Really interested in aviation, and "Eurowings" seems like a great company. I have one question: Do "Eurowings" require its pilots to speak fluent German if stationed in Germany? I know "Eurowings" have ARN, PRG and PMI as bases for "Eurowings Europe" and they only require fluent English. I would guess it's the same when operating from one of the bases in Germany?

According to my knowledge, the language requirements are different at different bases. Whatever is required will be posted as prerequisites in the job offering. As required, the callsign was included in all transmissions. Due to technical reasons, it may be difficult to hear/understand in one or the other transmission.

A very good tutorial again; thank you so much. How do you draw a line coming from the runway direction? (It seem on the navigational display) Do you draw it in the MCDU FIX INFO page? I can draw only radials in the FIX INFO. By the way when you turn off the A/THR, which do you do at first? Do you pull the thrust detent at first or do you turn off the A/THR at first? I could not see any DES or OP/DES sign at the FMA second column when you are descending from 100F ? Why is that? Thank you so much again and respects from 🇹🇷. I wish the best luck for you🙏

Line coming from the runway direction is just the approach you put from the flight plan page, you can draw lines with fix info though, or you can put the opposite of runway heading in radial in while directing to the center fix of an ils. When disconnecting A/THR you bring back the throttle and then disc (match the blue circles). The FMA column is blocked, that is why you cant see it, but it would say throttle idle, descend.

For the MSA or other information lines or circles, we usually use RADIAL FIX INFO. The runway is showing up on the map depending on the approach procedure which had been selected and how it is sequenced. If we do not chose an instrument approach, we can also use just the runway. This will create a line from the runway to a 5 nautical mile final. I disconnected the autothrust in the following manner: First I moved the thrust levers out of the climb detent. Then I moved the thrust levers to the actual thrust position. The actual thrust position is shown by green needles and the thrust lever positions are shown by small blue circles. Once this was matched, I pushed one of the autothrust disconnect buttons on the trust levers. After that, the FMA did not have any indications about thrust because it was done completely manually. There were also no other indications on the FMA because I was flying by hand with no flightdirectors or autopilot. At the beginning of the video, the autopilot was flying and due to the recording angle, the FMA was not completley visible. I am sorry about that.
