Recognizing a threat and naturally assuming they are just passing by or just striking a conversation are hard to judge sometimes. All kinds of people go under bridges. But how they don't have gear and came directly up to him would have been an indicator of danger. Just know what to look for and read the situation. But doing time in prison teaches you how to read someone's demeanor better and their ill intentions. A good learning experience, I think. Stay safe out there.

Normal folk will respect that and have a conversation or ask their question if they came to ask one. Only someone with bad intentions would continue to close in at which point you have a reasonable enough answer to take further measures like declaring they need to stop aggressing and presenting your firearm.

If someone doesn't seem to be a threat and doesn't understand personal space that's kinda up to you whether you want to just tolerate it for the interaction, explain it to them, or just excuse yourself. But anyone can be a threat and I think keeping your distance is a fine reaction to have with anyone when you're alone like this.

@@SaltyFarm No but you can usually tell when you need to get that gun out. That looked like a fairly isolated spot with very few people around. You don't ever want them getting so close. It could be easily taken away and even go from becoming a defense to being used against you.

J Slater no but there are some simple pre-attack indicators you can look for,such as the guys saying “nice kicks,what size are they?” Which is a known saying used whenever someone is attempting to rob someone else.
