I'm not convinced this particular outcome was intentional. The main goal appears to have been to pit the Klingons against the Cardassians, thereby weakening both potential threats. That it also shattered the peace treaty with the Federation may have just been serendipity.

Strangely, Sisko's announcement about the Klingons ending the peace treaty with the Federation didn't impact me as much as Worf's earlier revelation about the REAL reason the Klingons were invading Cardassia. "There are many Klingons who say we have been at peace too long; that the Empire must expand in order to survive. Fear - of the Dominion - has given my people an excuse to do what they were born to do: To fight... and to conquer."

nickys34 um, no?? at this point of the show the cardassians were as much enemies of the dominion as anyone else in the alpha quadrant, if not moreso after their attempted invasion. the klingon invasion of cardassia was built on baseless fear, and could’ve set a dangerous precedent. after gaining the resources of cardassia they could’ve invaded the romulans, and even the federation in the future based on those fears. in fact the only reason cardassia made an alliance with the dominion was BECAUSE of this klingon invasion weakening them and causing more fear. it’s exactly what the dominion wanted, the alpha quadrant turning on each other out of fear. sisko was right to call out the aggressors

The Klingon Empire is NOT built for peace ..... so Worf saying that is really in-line with the culture's mindset. Plus, the Klingons despised the Cardassians more than the Federation AND Maquis did. Tbh the federation could of just stayed neutral and let the Klingons attack Cardassia, this would of been a prime opportunity for the federation to fortify the wormhole without the Cards getting mad about it, since they are already fighting the klingons. Siskos rescue could of been framed as the desire to detain and confirm or disprove the Founders theory. Than go do some diplomatic stuff and get Garon to just destroy the Cardassians ability for war and let the federation do the occupation business. Maybe even "join" the invasion on the grounds of keeping the klingons in check.

First, there is the Federation's ideas of right and wrong. We are not talking about liberation, but naked aggression and conquest. Yeah, the Cardassian military doesn't have such scruples. This makes the Federation different. Also, there are practical considerations. Imagine Japan invading, say, Iran with no good reason. America may consider it a violation of international laws regarding national sovereignty. It woukl better to dissociate itself from such act instead of making the whole Asia think, "who is next?". You must remember that there is something like a galactic community. The Federation must defend its actions before said community even if no one is up to intervening. Being seen as part of an aggressive alliance may weaken the Federarion's soft power. The Federation certainly wants to have the neutral powers' good will and keep open channels to is enemies. And being able to enforce some non-interference consensus is useful (aggressors may seem themselves forced to resort to subtle trickery instead of naked aggression seem as a disturbance of the balance of power).

Tell that to the Koreans... To my point, it does not matter how good it would be (and the Klingons are not exactly more peaceful than the Japanese... or the Cardassian). It would still be violation of international law and America probably would think not be a good idea to support, lest the rest of the world start fearing American aggression. It could disrupt American alliances and create regional (or worse) conflicts America would think not worth it. So the hypotethical Japanese probably would be get a stern lecture on international law. Even Israel (it does not matter what one thinks about Israel and its relationship with America), an influential power in America and a key ally in an important area fihhting against real enemies, doesn't have free hands to do whatever it wants.

@TheLAGopher
@TheLAGopher 10 ай бұрын
The only reason the Organians got involved in the first place was the Federation and Klingons forced them into action by bringing their conflict to their door step. The Organians even said that involving themselves in the affairs of lesser developed civilizations was "Most distasteful" to them. Had Kirk and Spock left Organia before the Klingon occupation, the Organians would have been happy to fool the Klingons into thinking they were occupying a world of sheep. It was just the fact that Kirk,Spock, and the Klingons were about to start killing each other in the presence of the Organians, as well as the assembled fleets of both powers meeting in orbit over Organia, that forced the Organians to make a grand gesture such as stopping the Klingons and Federation everywhere and imposing a peace. I don't think the Organians really expected to enforce the treaty forever. They thought the Klingons and Federation were destined to be allies and just needed someone to set them on the path to peace.

once the Klingons started checking ships in Bajoran space for shapeshifters, and once the Defiant defended Kassidy's ship against a Klingon attempt to board it .... there was only ONE way this was going to go. like Midknight said ... the Klingons built its entire culture to fight ... to conquer. and the Federation HAD to go against the Klingons ... because if they run over Cardassia, there's no justifiable reason for the Klingons NOT to go after Deep Space 9.

Except for the fact of the alliance. Had Sisko not thrown away the alliance 'cuz he got thirsty, and cause the war that weakened both parties before the Dominion war, a lot of blood on both sides could have been spared. Instead he destroyed an alliance that had kept the peace and ensured both's safety for....what...close to 100 years?... to directly help an old enemy of the Federation.
@dhinton1
@dhinton1 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mark-xh8md the Klingons' whole strategy was based off a Changeling channeling them to do what they naturally do, which is fight. first off, the Klingons WERE violated Bajoran law. point blank. Kira plainly spelled that out. and the Changeling did that intentionally. second ... the Klingons' assault on Cardassia was based off a lie, and the Changeling running things with the Klingons KNEW it was a lie because the Founders were the ones that created the power vacuum within Cardassia. third .... and most importantly .... if the Klingons DID take over Cardassia, there literally IS no reason for their next move to be anything BUT take Deep Space 9. remember, there ALREADY WERE dozens of cloaked Klingon ships around DS9. that was confirmed EARLY in this episode. and if that happened, then the Changeling could write the script for the Dominion to waltz through the GQ/AQ gateway, and it's game over. The only reason that the battle that ended this double-episode didn't drag on further was because Gowron WAS NOT the Changeling, and he called things off after Federation reinforcements were in sensor range of the station. The DS9 writers did a good job dragging this arc with the Dominion out over five seasons (3-7), and this particular sub-arc over S4.

Gowron and the Klingon High Council saw a danger, the chance that Changelings had infiltrated the civilian and military leadership of a major regional power. What I find odd is that fact that the Klingons had the audacity to attack the Cardassians first, and then challenge the Federation, while about 100 years ago or so, their moon Praxis exploded and the Klingons were basically bankrupt. That moon never returned, so how did the Klingons eventually get their fleet back up in such a short time. And how stupid are they to challenge the Federation, from which they know, they can't win?
@milamberarial
@milamberarial 6 жыл бұрын
the Martok leading the fleet is a changeling, and he convinced Gowron that the Cardassians have been infiltrated by changelings. The changelings disturb the Klingons on a very visceral level, and they perceive the changelings as a threat to the entire alpha and beta quadrants. They haven't challenged the Federation at this point in the story, because they know that the Federation won't go to war with them. All they have done is make it clear that if the Federation does anything, the old treaty won't stop the Klingons from going to war with them too. They are relying on the Federation not wanting to start a war to keep the Feds out of the issue.
