According to "canon" the Vulcan captain is Sokar. His son Skonn had a quiet life as a researcher. His grandson Sarek may have been one of the greatest Vulcan's who ever lived and to paraphrase Picard "helped shape the Federation as it is". Sarek's son Spock - what more can I say. Talk about a family dynasty.

Cochrane is the best ambassador for humanity: he's not a politician, an idealist, or too intellectual; he's an everyman who just so happened to be a genius. First thing he does when encountering alien life forms? He doesn't give a speech to a crowd or ask them a million questions about their technology; no, he tries to make friends with them by taking them to the local bar, buying them drinks and showing them how to dance. It's actually touching how ordinarily human he is.

@@jeremydale4548 No, the Vulcan exploration ship spotted the unexpected warp signature near Earth and the captain decided on his own to investigate, violating their Prime Directive. Vulcan proper made (re-)contact only when it was plain that the smoke could not be stuffed back into the bottle, and the humans were receptive to seeing Vulcans again. Almost certainly an analysis by the Science Academy suggested that Earth civilization -- what was left of it -- would not be destroyed by closer contact, and might even benefit therefrom. Picard has already forgotten Q's lessons from All Good Things... Q tasked him to consider how his actions could damage the past & after jumping into the timeless-ribbon Picard is now altering first contact. did Zefrin Cochran leave Earth at the correct time so he could be found by an amorous energy‐being? Riker didn't mention THAT part of Cochran's history. my guess is that Q decided to stop cleaning up humanity's time travel mishaps. he issued a warning, demonstrated the power of time, and only afterwards do we hear about "temporal cold war" the federation STARTED that cold war with this kind of alteration of the past!

Vulcans were not entirely logical in this period of history. Until Archer brought the Kir'Shara from the Forge and the teachings or Surak were rediscovered.

Try combining the first 2 minutes of the Mirror universe opening version with this version, so we can see the scene without Picard talking and seeing the future people.

It's funny, I think First Contact had a lot of serious flaws and the future portrayed in Star Trek is largely based in political ideals I don't necessarily agree with, and certainly not where the franchise is now, but all those caveats out of the way this scene is one of the more powerful and moving of the entire series. I still tear up a little bit when the score swells and humanity meets the Vulcans for the first time, and that transition towards the handshake. The idea of something uniting humanity and making us collectively a better people is just so beautiful and hopeful.

I'm not so sure. Collectivism has never worked before, despite many attempts. Hell, our current economic and geopolitical climate is due entirely to collectivism. Wars are what happen when committees get together to make arbitrary decisions for the rest of us.

Man, this is a weird ass first contact scene. Probably the only contact scene in media where the aliens sit around in a bar and listen to classical rock while one of the most advanced engineers of our species dances.

That's why I prefer the Mirror Universe's first contact version where Cochrane killed the Vulcan envoys, then led Terrans to seize their ship. I think it's more badass and likely more realistic when we do have first contact with an alien race, as there's a 50-50 chance it would go either good or bad for us.

Each time I see this scene it brings tears to my eyes. Imagine the future we can have. Imagine the friendships we can make with beings from other worlds. Imagine one united human race that makes contact with being from other plants. We can do it. I know we can and we will one day travel through space, the final frontier. We can explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations. We can boldly go where no one has gone before.
