Aprilia Invited us out to one of their special Track Demo Days to try out some of their offerings in a track setting (which is probably the most perfect place to test out an Aprilia). With such a cool opportunity we decided this would be the perfect time to test if a Supersport body position was that much more different for track riding as compared to a upright sport position. What will we find out? Let's get the Aprilia RS 660 and the Tuono 660 out for a few laps around Road Atlanta to find out in today's video!

The rs 660 doesn’t have a “typical “ sport body position, it’s way less radical than let’s say a gsxr just as an example, in Italy it’s considered one of the most street friendly sport bikes because exactly for this reason....

Great video Chase. Nice to see some Aprilia content. I replaced my CBR500R last May with a 22 RS660. I have taken it on 1 long excursion from Southern AB, Canada, down to Montana and back and I gotta say: For anyone considering this bike it's an AMAZING alternative to the traditional sportbikes we know and love like the R6 or ZX6R or GSXR. You should definitely take a look at this bike for your everyday riding needs. Yes it's more money but my god, the smiles per gallon and the distance I can put on this thing before being sore is incredible. I have a bike that gets compliments often (rarely experienced on the Honda I had) which is really fun too. Can't really imagine doing an 8 hour saddle day/travel weekend on the more traditional sportbikes like I did on the RS 660!! Unfortunately no tracks nearby where I live though :/

Blottskie would you not agree that the RS660 has the perfect riding position even for the street and for some sport touring and not just the track that many tends to believe? I would even say the opposing thing to Chase that it would feel better on the street than the Tuono 660. The RS660 has that perfect comfortable sporty riding position I wish more bikes had. The more traditional sport bikes must be really uncomfortable for anything else than track.

@@mathias6423 I am a guy that prefers fully-faired motorcycles in general so maybe I am biased! There was a guy who used to ride in our group on the MT-09 and I just couldn't get into the seating position and I hated it (aside from the engine). The RS660 truly feels designed FOR ME at 6ft 200+lbs it doesn't seem cramped at all. I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to do an 8 hour travel day, with breaks as per usual, and I felt BARELY more sore than I did on the very upright CBR500R I used to own. Just an incredible all-around "do everything you want it to" machine. The Tuono is a nice compromise but I have never even sat on one, from the first moment I laid eyes on the RS660 and sat on it...I knew there was no point. Bonus points for trippin' when you aren't wringing it out, the RS660 gets pretty good fuel economy too.

Chase you are absolutely spot on with the body position point. I can relate seeing I traded in my RS660 for a Tuono V4 1100. I noticed exactly what you felt on the ride home. I was going thru some tight corners on the Tuono and noticed my body wasn't in the correct position on the bike like I was on the 660 which takes some adjustment with the upright handle bars. Congrats on your track day and great video!

@JoshPhillips7781
@JoshPhillips7781 Жыл бұрын
@@jarno6452 Offset between the tuono lower clamp and RS top clamp is off by 2mm, so nope... and nobody makes a top triple for the Tuono without handlebar mounts (yet). Only way to do it is to swap in the RS lower as well which is not a small project. Gotta find a way to lift the front of the bike without a front stand since any front stand will lift it from either the lower triple or the bottom of the forks, both of which have to come off the bike. AF1 will happily order an RS 660 lower triple/steering column + bearing and dust cover though. It wasn't a cheap mod, but jesus do I love how the bike came out. It is cheaper than getting an RS and upgrading the suspension to match the Factory though (assuming you do the work yourself).

@@JoshPhillips7781 wow, thanks for quick and indeep response! Guess ill have to wait a few sallarys and let professionals do it with the lower aswell.. And you dont run into problems with the grips or levers touching the front "fairings"?👍🤔

@JoshPhillips7781 Жыл бұрын
@@jarno6452 I worked with the guys from Woodcraft to make sure I had the right setup to ensure that didn't happen (it was their first Tuono conversion too, so they were excited to help out). Ended up with 75mm side mount risers with 51mm fork clamps with their RS 660 top clamp. Assuming you position them properly, they clear the tank and front fairing with zero issues. In this configuration, the ends of the bars drop about 3.25" compared to the stock handlebar (although you can adjust the bar angles by about 7 degrees) and the bars end up slightly wider than the stock bar too. I've tried both 12" and 13.5" bars and I prefer the 13.5" personally. If you can do it yourself, you should, as it is likely a 5 hour job at the shop. Where I live, that's basically $1k in labor. Beyond getting it in the air (I used my Abba Sky Lift), nothing about the job is difficult. Even if you have to buy a lift, assuming you have a basic set of tools it is still cheaper than the labor (and as a bonus, you get to have an intimate afternoon with your bike). You just have to remove the fairings, front wheel, and forks before you replace the steering column and reassemble the controls. Also a good opportunity to clean your front brakes since you already have the wheel off... If you have someone else do it, you are still looking at probably an hour adjusting everything to fit you anyway. At the end of the day, I have a more comfortable bike that feels better to ride more aggressively, and it looks freaking beautiful. I will confidently say that I have one of the best looking Tuono 660's on the planet.

I would definitely choose the Tuono Factory as it's way more comfortable & is practically faired anyway. It also has better suspension, gearing & is also lighter & cheaper too.

That's one of the problems I sometimes have on my GSXS-1000GT, It's more upright and sometimes in certain corners it doesn't feel right at spirited riding paces which has me considering a supersport for more aggressive rides. It feels like riding a naked bike only with tighter leg positioning so sometimes it can be awkward if you don't get body positioned right.
@mathias6423
@mathias6423 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree with you 100%. That is exactly one of my points that I made in another comment on this video and many others. The Suzuki GSX-S1000GT and Kawaski Z1000SX or Ninja 1000SX if you will are prime examples of sport touring going wrong. What you mention is something a lot of owners (me included as I had the Ninja 1000 SX 2018) are complaining about on the forums of these bikes as well. The handlebars on the GSXS GT or the Clip-ons on the Ninja 1000SX are too high and too close to the rider. You sit dead upright on a SPORT tourer which just feels weird and not sporty at all. These bikes should have the same riding/body position as the Ducati Supersport 950, Honda VFR800F and H2SX just mentioning the few ones that still exists (minus VFR800F😢) If the handlebars were a bit lower you could have a tiny bit more weight on your wrists and a little less weight on your ass and still be comfortable but feel and ride much more sporty. I was looking like crazy how to lower the bars on my Ninja 1000 SX but here was no easy fix, neither was it an easy fix for the GSX-S1000F as your GT was named earlier. There was so many owners on the forums of these bikes talking about that they wanted to lower the handlebars as well because they felt the position was unnecessary upright. It is a damn shame that the manufacturers have to make almost all the bikes dead upright, where all the weight is on your ass and you are like a sail in the wind where almost no windscreen works like it should, if the riding position was a bit more sporty you would lean into the wind more making it feel a lot better combined with the windscreen. If your GSX-S1000GT had handlebars or clip-ons lower as the old BMW K1300S or the VFR1200F which were still comfortable sport tourers, I would buy the GSX-S1000GT this summer.

I’d say the RS660 makes sense for most street riders because it’s not that aggressive of an attack position with the raised bars. If I was going to have a track bike 600, the RS660, R6, and ZX6R would be what I’d be struggling to choose between before saying screw it the answer is always GSXR750 lol. It is funny watching you on both bikes because the RS you ride closer to how you should on track and the Tuono you ride like you’re on street mildly aggressive. Like very safe, not attacking the apex, not leaning hard, braking early, late acceleration on both. But the RS is much less noticeable and closer to what should be expected on track. I also had a pretty good laugh when I called out what race suit you’re wearing, even though I’ve never worn one, simply because of the design on the arms is the same as the palm of the Sedici gloves I have.

I'm a 5'4, 140lbs with next to no back problems. 1) Can I justify buying a RS for street use? 2) is it worth spending the extra $$$ over the regular Tuono (not factory)? 3) Does the performance out weight the cons of riding in an more aggressive style compared to the Tuono?

OC: I think Chase is somewhat WRONG here and I would rather take the RS660 body position on the street as well as the track compared to the Tuono (Tuono is much worse on highway as well), what he explains about the RS660 being better in turns applies on the road as well, and it is not that uncomfortable as a pure supersport. If I remember correctly the riding position on the RS660 is not as aggressive as an R1 or RSV4 for example, but more of a middle ground between the Tuono and the RSV4. For me as a tall rider, that is more comfortable than sitting dead upright in the wind like on many naked bikes and sadly also SPORT tourers. I really wish more manufacturers made sporty street bikes and sport touring bikes with a more aggressive but comfortable riding position again like they used to (think of Honda VFR800F and the Suzuki SV1000S faired version). People that complain about their bad backs, have like every bike to choose from right now, which sucks. They can have their adventure style bikes to ride on , that is fine by me, but please make sporty bikes sporty again. Riding upright on a sport bike just feels wrong.
