After a day of track spankings at Silverstone, we took the Aprilia RSV4 RF and Yamaha R1M back to Her Majesty's highways in the quest for 2015 supremacy. A pub was found, some Coca Cola was drunk and some McD's was savaged.

also just want to add as some aggro comments below.. BOTH of these bikes are the VERY BEST of 2015 and no-one who owns either should be regretting their purchase choice. They are both sublime machines, hence why they are the 2 we picked as our favs. Personally, I felt that the R1 edged it but both are seriously rapid and sexual things :)

+Neel Beke Apart from Aprilla costs 4 grands more :) and all parts you'll be buying will cost compare to R1 parts, ;) my choice is R1 and not because I've raced a lot on R6 it is just a best bike at the market for both Racing and Road riding.

Just a follow up, I picked up my brand new RSV4 RF on Friday, August 5th, 2016, from Blackfoot Motorsports in Calgary, AB. The bike is simply unreal. There are so many things that this video does not address. The styling, the way the gas tank is formed, the way the tail section is formed, the red metallic paint on the wheels (you have to be in person and in the sun to believe what they've done there), and the sound..........ooooooooh..........the sound is insane. The seat is incredible as well. I find the R1M boring. It doesn't have any of the Italian style and flare. The fit and finish on the RSV4 RF is stunning. It blows away the two Ducatis I've owned. As far as sound goes, the RSV4 RF is the best sounding bike I've ever heard, with a stock exhaust. The fueling is spot on, the brakes are spot on, it's just brilliant. When I walk out to my garage, I'm glad I don't see an R1M sitting there..................................................

your whole argument that the R1M is a better bike is based on the fact the the bike has slide control and when exiting a corner the throttle can be whacked, a black line left and more accelaration being the benefit of this.. Have you tried playing with the settings on the RSV4-RF.. since 2010 all RSV4's have had Slide Control incorporated within there Traction Control or ATC System. 6 adjustable modes of TC which incorporates Slide Control.. You mention that the Rsv4-RF has better braking, corner entry and a better centre of gravity allowing for better control in the corners... i am sure that if you learn to take advantage of the full capabilities of the ATC system which includes slide control.. opinions may change... but if not.. hey each to there own.
@mattyoz0
@mattyoz0 8 жыл бұрын
+aaron wyner the r1 has two separate modes for tc and slide control as they are two different things. get that in your fucking dumb heads. the Aprilia can not hold a slide, end of fucking story.
@BaronVonGrumble
@BaronVonGrumble 8 жыл бұрын
+aaron wyner Its part of the decision (not argument), that and the power, the look, the feel, the speed, the quick shifter, the ability to adjust suspension without screw drivers, the data logger, the dash, the ali tank - and the fact that this is a massive step forward in terms of motorcycle development. The RF is fantastic as we said, but the R1 is the better bike in my humble opinion. Have you ridden both back to back on a race track? The RSV4 does not have slide control - it has traction control. Its different technology and any new track focused bike without it will suffer against it. Cheers :)

I have owned many sport bikes over the years. Many from Japan (CBR, ZX-7, GSX-R) and two Ducatis (900SS/999). I can honestly say that, with the Japanese bikes, I had to be riding them like a complete lunatic to have fun. Otherwise, they were what I like to think of as a "disposable" razor. Use it up, and get another one. With the two Ducatis I owned, I never felt that way. Whether it was just looking at them in the garage, washing them, cruising on them, parking them up and answering questions about them, the ownership experience was vastly better than the Japanese bikes. They were "special". That is the one thing missing in these reviews. Yes, you can leave a big patch of rubber on the tarmac with the R1M, but am I ever going to do that? No. I am going to drive my bike on the street, up to Whistler, to grab a coffee, etc. Which bike would I prefer to look at in my garage, wash, cruise on? Which bike is "special"? I have to say the Aprilia.

Right on guys! I am one of those "electronics are shite blah blah man up and learn some skill" type guys but as you said, for track use you want to exploit everything you possibly can and the R1 is bloody amazing! This stuff will only trickle down become standard on other bikes but for now lets champion the amazing piece of engineering that it is. However, Ill take the Aprilia all day every day! You lot may not think its slow but its fast enough for me and it is a beautiful piece of design. Keep it up with the honest reviews and the not so polished delivery. I love what you guys are doing! Keep it up!
@ShamanWS6
@ShamanWS6 8 жыл бұрын
+gnarshread It is not slow. I've raced my RF against an 1199S, a K1300GT (yah well it happened) and a MV F4. So far, it's 3 for 3 and other than the MV, it eclipsed the other bike. Once you let a F4 get over 11,000 rpm it'll hang on for a while, the gearing and that top-end oriented motor are still hardcore. The funny thing is I did all those races before the bike was broken in (it barely is now) and so I didn't rev it over about 12,000... the RF will make power to about 13,000 and with the race ECU it peaks at 13,800. These guys don't know it yet but the RF with a full system and race ECU is a whole other beast again than the one they tested, there's 20whp in that setup and the traction control is race-ready.

People who say they want to turn the electronics off simply haven't ridden a bike with good electronics. The modern electronics are that good I just have no idea why you would want to disable them, besides wheelie control :) I also know what you mean about leaving a huge line on the R1 while smoking anyone out of a corner, I was the guy getting smoked on my old ZX6R, dived under brakes, watched him round me up on the way out leaving a huge black line, was impressive lol.

I don't know how I missed this video, love it! I sold my cross plane r1 and couldn't decide between the Aprilia Tuono v4 1100 Factory and the '17 MT10 and it's brilliant cross plane i4 , both sound epic when the cat is removed or full system . Funny thing is jsut your point spot on, I went MT10 BECAUSE I Live in the US and don't have an aprilia dealer working 1,200 miles of me,..and with their track record it scared me,..oh and the factory 1100 was $7,000 us more lol. I never looked back or regretted going MT10 and anyone that buys one, buy the $150 decat Y-pipe and listen to straight up motor GP for $9,000! 😍 Man I love your videos guys ! I went from a 2010 R1 (non-"M" version, but as you've said, 99% the same), to a 2016 RSV4 RF. So this video appealed to me a LOT. The electronics on both bike are such a great thing, especially compared to the late 90's-early 2000's sport bikes I've owned previously (CBR900RR, 2001 GSXR-600). You really can't go wrong with either one. As someone who is 5' 11", but very tall in the torso, and short in the legs, both are better than most, but I agree, the RSV4 edges it out in handlebar comfort/position for me. And with my ample ass, the seats on both are still worlds better than the older bikes, too.

+650ib RSV4 R-FW I would have both if I could honestly. Nothing sounds like an RSV4 it's just too sex. Honestly though my PERFECT garage would probably be an RSV4 RR and Street Triple R. But I'm just sitting here with my first bike (2015 Ninja 300 SE) put on 6,000 miles in four months. Got to ride by a bunch of amazing bikes out of my price range including an R1M, two other R1's, Panigale's, an HP4. In terms of speed a GSXR still seems solid with everyone's riding skills. That being said I'm in love with the Daytona and Street Triple. If I were ever in a situation where I could acquire both I probably would. Yet I need something that has a rumble that's why I'm seriously debating another Twin or what not. I think a 300 to an RSV4 would probably be a BAD move. Even with a lot of dirt bike experience.. My little 300 is very forgiving and lets just say if I was still on a 600 (has a gsxr for two weeks awhile ago) I probably would have binned it. The 300 twitches etc and is like 'Hey, Hey you. Yea I'm talking to you buddy. What you just did there was bad. Don't do it.' Yet it's so light and fun in the twisties. I love riding it in the rain to. Had the bike sliding like a WSBK bike going into a round a bout like a month ago. Not going to lie it was a little scary having the front shimmy from left to right and the rear! Yet at that exact moment I was like Haha (grin on face) I've seen the pro's do this in the wet. (Those stock ninja 300 tires LOL bad in the wet!)

I was sceptical about the electrical 'aids' on bikes until I rode the 2015 s1k. I can't agree more with what you guys are getting at, the bike made me feel like a god. The electric suspension is very tasty on the road also. getting back to the god thing, I currently have an 899 which is hardly a fisher price early leaner in terms of electrical gizmo's but it felt it compared to the s1k. great review chaps.

I agree on your argument regarding electronics on a bike, traction control, ABS, electronic suspension, its all designed to make you go quicker and be safer...what more do you want on a bike?! Some people are just silly, get with the times people, go test ride an s1000rr, a 2015 r1, an rsv4 RF etc. and understand how much better these bikes really are compared to previous generations of everything.

Great Channel guys lovin it... Just an idea and i apologise in advance if youve done this already... Maybe you should do a real world track test of say an R1M with a seasoned trackday rider on board, meaning (the guys that buy these 20K bikes for trackdays with no race experience) against a sorted GSXR1000K6 with a real rider on board. No bells no whistles too see how far the electronics package of modern kit compliments rider skill level.

+tdeloriea Pretty much all the newer bikes with ride-by-wire suck for wheelies. You don't have the throttle control you want to bring one up and keep it there. They also tend to come up more abruptly than you'd like. The V4's fuelling lets you do it much better from my brief experience with a new R1, which fuels like it's taken a hit of meth if you try to do any finesse with it... between TC and RBW it's too numb for it. Additionally, both bikes have a very race-oriented geometry with a long swingarm. TL;DR they both suck for long wheelies.

If you were to use these bikes for long highway treks to get to twisty, tight mountain roads with a lot of elevation changes which would you pick? You guys agree that the r1 doesn't come to life below 70 so does that mean the April is is better in the hills? Thanks!

But Fagan in your Fast Bikes Sportsbike of the Year '15 article you had the RSV4 RF on top, beating R1M overall (11/10 vs 10/10), on road (9 vs 7) and track (Ape fastest lap), and said it had the sexiest sounding exhaust....

I rode the standard R1 at the Sausage fest. I have a video on my channel. I found it quite comfortable on the wrist for the whole 30 minutes I rode it. It's felt as if there wasn't much weight on them. I'm 5ft 10. It's very hard to keep a steady throttle when at lower speeds other than that i really liked it.

Is the Euro spec R1M different to the USA one? Because on a USA Dyno the R1 makes about 13hp less than the RSV4.

Hey guys, nice video. Quick question, have you guys tryied the RSV4RR? If so, how does it compare to the RSV4RF? I'm considering buying, just not sure if I can justify the extra cash for the RF version? Help...please! :)

+Eduardo de Vasconcelos Same bike except for wheels and suspension. If I'm honest, the RR is likely a better street bike, those lightweight wheels on the RF make the bike pretty flighty and it doesn't really want to stand upright at low speeds (true of any bike with really lightweight wheels, but you get used to it). The suspension on the RR is pretty good, a big step up from many bikes, you're unlikely to want for more. On the track it's a tossup too, because you likely want a TTX shock for that work, although the RF's shock can be revalved to a pre-2007 WSBK level so there is no shame in using it.

Test the 2017 RF vs R1M,the newfound power of the latest Ape should bridge that power gap, also better brakes electronics and suspension should make it intersting!

Now the comparison difference is the R1M was brand new and changed some the game with upgraded electronics, carbon and more horsepower and torque The aprilia was on it's 6th year The bikes always come out with game changer and each manufacture does it's best to catch up or leap frog each other

I'm curious to know if the 2016 zx10r, Kawasaki 'calculated' yaw/slide stacks up to the R1 bosch slide control.
@ShamanWS6
@ShamanWS6 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, it does. But Kawasaki's needs some time to stabilise, as it is a bit abrupt. But not as abrupt as the R1 is once you try to get it to race speeds. It's been a real problem with shock pump, wheelies and lighting up the rear tire once you put it in racing. You need to spend the money and the time to gain the knowledge of their FT software to program the TC for racing - if you don't, you will work against yourself in a big way. Aprilia's bike is capable right out of the box... it too will pump the rear shock a bit but all the current bikes will, a bit - the R1's will put you on your face, it's a matter of when and not if. You'll also need to upgrade the R1's brakes, whereas the ZX10R and RSV4 have the same brakes... add zome Z04 pads to those and you're ready to race.

How will the r1 slide control put you on your face? Part 1 of this video series has one guy pinning the throttle on corner exit, trusting slide control, and leaving a perfectly controlled skid from the slide. The r1 is the most track focused and track ready bike of the bunch for banging out lap times. Brakes are said to be iffy, but the zx10r brembos are also said to not be great as Kawasaki has messed with them somehow.

I guess you didn't understand what I said. I said that in racing, people are struggling hard with making the TC work properly. In race form, the bike is lighter, there is a lot more tire under it, speeds are a lot higher and throttle use is a lot more "heavy." The bike's systems apparently don't work in that combination without a lot of reprogramming and calibration. BMW's does. Aprilia's does. So, if that's race-ready to you, have at it, hoss. But, chances are pretty certain you'll struggle with wheelspin, wheelies and shock pump - no amount of fanboyism is going to prevent that, it's going to take concerted work with FT-ECU and a lot of knowledge to make the R1 work. The good news is that the tools are available.
