Wow really amazed sections can be replaced; right to repair FTW. That is a really huge win given the insane $56,000 repair cost controversy for an impaled ionic 5 battery here in BC.

Great detail here Raj. This shows very large surface area on both the interior and exterior sides of the belly pan, which is very good (and necessary) for dissipating heat. It is also spread over a long length, giving air flow a longer contact time to pick up heat and move it. At first glance, the design looks difficult to manufacture, but it feels right for getting the job done.

Does look complex & would need very special tooling. Well worth it though.
@DemaGeek6 ай бұрын
@@RajGiandeep I think you're right and the tooling is likely expensive..... but it might be a case of once the tooling is built, lots of parts can be stamped, and quickly.

The laminar flow Aptera is so focused on will have multiples lower heat transfer coefficient. I haven't tried modeling this yet but I suspect not enough for cabin, motors, and batteries. I think cabin is the hard part because of the lower temperature and still pretty big load.
@DemaGeek6 ай бұрын
@@artsmith103 Remember that they plan to have airflow on both sides of the belly pan, interior and exterior. The interior side can be natural airflow of exterior air as it enters at the base of the windshield, or fan forced. The coolant also runs through a heat exchanger where the A/C can remove heat more directly as required. Combinations of these three, or all of them can be used at the same time as well.
@DemaGeek6 ай бұрын
@@artsmith103 The laminar flow around the exterior of the vehicle may be beneficial in helping to draw the interior side belly pan air flow out the tail where it exhausts on either side of the license plate.

It will be interesting to see how soon Aptera will move to the belly cooling. Obviously it will require testing for refinement. I expect Aptera will focus most of its efforts to getting launch edition and subsequent production of the same technology out on as expedited basis to establish the company’s cash flow. There is also the consideration that many - perhaps very many - prospective owners might choose to wait for Aptera to incorporate belly cooling and heat pump. This could lead to financial planning considerations. My guess is that Aptera will not include these features until 2026 at the earliest and will almost certainly include a price increase when that happens. Yes, I would like to have these two features in my Aptera. However, I want my Launch Edition as soon as possible.
@RajGiandeep6 ай бұрын
I'm thinking I might get the Accelerator Aptera instead of waiting. BUT ... if I only have to wait another year for the belly cooling. I'll wait another year & let somebody else have my Accelerator spot. I would think we'd have a better idea of timing on the belly cooling & heat pump as the launch vehicles start delivering.

@@RajGiandeep I wonder if it will be possible to retrofit the LE models with belly cooling once the development of those components is finalized. As long as the major SMC and subframe components are designed to be compatible with it and do not require significant modification to introduce the feature, the right-to-repair approach may be supportive of that. If the belly cooling design demonstrates meaningful benefits I would want to upgrade as soon as the parts are available.
@RajGiandeep6 ай бұрын
@@christopherbrand5360 I seem to recall Aptera saying that some things would be upgradable. I'd hope they would design with that in mind with the current PI builds. I know I'd upgrade to belly cooling asap.

So exciting! I do still have some questions, like how will knock-knock work when the Aptera is covered with ice?

Not sure, the hydraulic lifts, seem just enough to lift it & not the push through thick ice. So might need to loosen some ice buildup before knocking to open.

Wondering what exactly is patented or IOW what might be considered a patent infringement thereby providing Aptera a competitive advantage? Doubt ANY competitor’s aerodynamic heat exchanger would be a patent violation but unsure what aspects could potentially be potentially a "side hustle". Recall Chris Anthony saying (few months ago) he wouldn’t be surprised if licensing revenue exceeded vehicle sales revenue.

This looks similar to the patents I have seen for the belly cooling before, but goes into a lot more details. So it seems like this is a new patent on the more finalized design. If they are still tweaking the details at this point, I can see why they don't expect it to be ready for the first production models. I was thinking, based on another video, that some of the later PI builds, like PI 13 through 16, could be assigned to the development of the belly pan. They could be built after actual deliveries have begun.
@RajGiandeep6 ай бұрын
Good point. PI's can be reused for other uses as time goes on too.
@richardryley36606 ай бұрын
@@RajGiandeep Yeah, I'm guessing that we will see some of the PI models locked down for demos and shipment for events around the world. Maybe some will stay over in Europe or Asia so they save money on shipping. Others will be used for further refinement and development of things like the Off Road package or the tent. Once a system is finalized, it can be installed on the demo models. And of course there will be several used for crash testing which will be destroyed in the test.
