It's huge. I spent nearly 24 hours of this trip just driving in California. Southern California is kind of bland, although I like San Diego, and of course, Santa Monica is a place I always visit whenever I'm in the LA area, but central and northern California were wonderful to drive through - the high cliffs along the coast, the huge Redwood trees, etc.

@Unclecoolie Productions Southern California is only bland if stick to the never ending cities that stretch from LA to SD and from the ocean to San Bernardino (although like you said there Are some jewels in there like SD, SM, ect), but there are some really pretty areas outside of that. There are some parts of San Diego County that are like Sonoma, some of the desert areas can be pretty, most of the mountain areas like Big Bear are pretty and VERY different to like LA. We have some, just not Nearly as much as in northern California. I agree though, I think Northern California (and the Central Coast too for that matter) are much better :))

I just finished Day 2. I grew up in Southern California but know very little about anything north of the Bay Area. There are people in that area but not so many as to the south. There were a lot of places to see. I was fascinated by the redwoods just south of Crescent City. Another big tree in California is the Giant Sequoia. If it gets enough water it can grow in yards and on university campuses here in Utah. and it gets pretty big. The climate is very different in Northern California. Up close to the Ocean it's rainier than I thought. I did not notice the redwoods on your time lapse version of the trip

I'd wanted to drive through to see both the sequoias and Death Valley, but it would've been too far from the coast to do in this trip. Maybe one day, though.

Hey! I really enjoy your videos! As a NorCal native, I couldn’t help but recommend a way for you to see the redwoods in the coast of Mendocino county, some of the towns inland, and come back out to the coast just a few miles up the coast highway. If you turn right at 5:56:12, highway 128 takes you right through the redwood forest. You can stop and hike through Montgomery woods if that’s your thing, or taste some wine at the vineyards along the highway. Follow 128 for an hour or so and take 253 at Boonville towards Ukiah. Head north on 101 to Willits and take highway 20 out to the coast, which connects to highway 1 at Fort Bragg. It’s probably not worth a whole trip to Cali for, but if you ever find yourself in the area again, I highly recommend it. Lots of cool scenery and cute towns. It adds about an extra 2 hours of driving but I think it’s worth it.
@unclecoolie4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! If I am back in the area, I'll try that. For this trip, I just wanted to focus on PCH and US-101.

@@unclecoolie If you are sticking to 101, I think easiest/best exposure to redwoods is 1) avenue of giants at Humboldt county and 2) Newton D Drury Scenic byway at Redwoods national park, both of which runs pararel to the 101 (I'm pretty sure they are sections of old 101 before it turned into a freeway)

You know, if you're out of road trip ideas, you can just do some of the older ones again, but this time backwards. There are plenty of places where it will completely different. Like the one where you drove from nebraska to l.a mosty on two lane roads. Those landscapes were sick. I would definitely watch that trip in the other direction. Also if you make some future plans from the commenters, i have a few of those, too. I would love to see some footage from the western part of north carolina, around the "dragon's tail" road and mt. mitchell. Basically around the highest parts of the Appalachean mountain. And i heard there are some beutfiul lakes there aswell. Another one is the north-eastern parts around mt.washington in new hampshire, and the area around allegheny n.forest in PA and nigara falls. But my all time favourite has to be washington. Mt. St.Helens, Mt. Rainer, Seattle, Olympic National Park. I love that state. If you could do some trip there i would be very happy.
@unclecoolie6 жыл бұрын
I have actually thought of redoing, at least my drive from Nebraska to California, using the Garmin Virb that I have with real-time, since I recorded my Nebraska to California trip in time-lapse using the Mobius Action camera that doesn't record any GPS information. I don't know if or when I'll be able to do that again, though. I have already done three more long road trips since I did this west coast trip, so I'm still editing the video for those. In those trips I have passed through the northeast, but not through Mt. Washington. I have also done a trip through the southern Appalachian mountains, but I didn't pass through Mt. Mitchell. After I finish the rest of this west coast real-time drive, I will work on my next video, which will be my trip to Key West. I will do some more shorter trips, also, including maybe to the Smoky Mountains and Adirondacks, and if I do go back to upstate NY, I may make my way over to Mt. Washington - I've always wanted to see that as well.

The drive through Monterey county in the last video was gorgeous. I want to one day take a trip up the PCH California sealine, but I live on the east coast (Atlanta) so that makes it difficult. By the time I got out to San Diego to make the trip north I would be so tired of driving that it would probably spoil the whole thing, nevermind that I don't have a vehicle that I trust enough to make such a trek. One day, maybe. Ive often thought about flying out there and renting a vehicle to take the trip, but that would likely cost a fortune. I guess for me driving down the Florida coastlines are much more realistic.
@unclecoolie6 жыл бұрын
I loved this trip, especially in central and northern California. I flew out to San Diego and picked up a rental car that I used for this trip. My next major road trip video will be down the east coast and into Florida, but it will be sometime in January before I get the video finished and uploaded.
@toddstewart90706 жыл бұрын
How steep were the rental costs? This is something I have wanted to do for years. Fly either to San Diego or Seattle (not sure if I would travel north or south yet), rent a vehicle, drive it to the other side of the coast, turn it in and fly back home from there. Maybe spend a week doing it, 4 to 6 days. Id have my wife with me so she would want to stop everywhere most likely, but I would stay on the coastal highway. Marin county from the Golden Gate and along the coastline on PCH was definitely a sight to see.

San Francisco to Bodega Bay to Crescent City to Portland and back via Bend, Klamath Falls, Lake Tahoe and SF Thanks so much for all you do. I loved the graphic overlays on your videos. I have purchased a VanTrue Dash Cam to use in the rental cars we will use. Is there particular software you use for the graphic overlays?
@unclecoolie5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Those are some great drives, especially Blue Ridge Parkway to Washington (I'm assuming that you will also drive through Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, which is another video that I will be uploading in the upcoming weeks). In your Las Vegas to Grand Canyon trip, you should strongly consider driving up into Utah to visit some parks there as some of the scenery there is spectacular, especially in Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks, as well as Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, but there are others. I don't know anything about the Van True Dash Cam, but I use the Garmin Virb Ultra 30, which records the GPS information that you see on the videos. The Virb Software that comes with the camera has basic editing tools and has the ability to extract the recorded GPS information and put it on the video. For all other editing, including scene cuts, subtitles, other graphics overlays, I use Final Cut Pro.

Unclecoolie Productions Thanks so much. We are tossing up whether to do Skyline Drive as well as two days from Asheville to Waynesboro (overnight in Meadows of Dan) and it is a balance of seeing that or going from Waynesboro to DC via Charleston. It will be a once only trip and we want to see the smaller towns and people as well. We have family in Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon trip is - at the moment - a day driving to there and a day driving back with three nights / two full days at the south rim village. The west coast drive and back down through Klamath falls etc will be over 9 days in late April / early May and your video is almost perfectly matched for time. I know you probably get lots of contacts and would understand if you prefer not but, if at all possible, I would love to contact via email to bounce some ideas off you. Can I ask what camera did you use and how you got all the information on the video. Location/Elevation, Map and Compass
@unclecoolie2 жыл бұрын
I used the Garmin Virb Ultra 30, which records the GPS information. The Virb software that the camera uses extracts the GPS data and puts it in the video. All the rest of the editing, including the overlays and texts, I do in Final Cut Pro. I created the graphic overlays using Photoshop.

Was one of the reasons your west coast drive was the most tiring of all the long drives you've taken was all the sharp curves you had to go around on for long periods of time?
@unclecoolie5 жыл бұрын
That's correct, plus constantly stepping on the break and gas pedals.
@jonathangottlieb39755 жыл бұрын
@@unclecoolie The PCH isn't designed for anyone who's in a hurry, it's a scenic road for people to see many miles of beauty and I noticed some of those pieces from a bridge in the road that can be bad for your tires and give them a flat tire if not careful.

Did it feel like you would never get out of CA since it's so big and long North to South?
@unclecoolie6 жыл бұрын
It was long - I think about 24 hours altogether that I spent driving in CA, and I spent less time driving in OR, WA, and BC combined than in CA.
@jonathangottlieb39756 жыл бұрын
@@unclecoolie was the reason you said this was the most tiring trip of any of your long trips was due to so many curves that you had to drive on and more concentration due to them?

Yes, with interstates, you can use cruise control and not have to worry about sharp curves, unlike this trip.

I have to you 2 questions 1 what long trips are still planned 2 it is your work or a hobby and you like to travel
@unclecoolie6 жыл бұрын
I don't have any more big trips planned in the immediate future, but I have three more long road trips' worth of video to post after I complete the real-time video of this trip, so there's much to come. Also, I will be uploading short trips as well. I will likely do a couple of more long road trips this coming spring/summer. I do this mainly as a side business/hobby from my actual work, which is IT/security consulting.

Do you like Northern or Southern California better?
@unclecoolie5 жыл бұрын
Northern CA for sure. Southern CA doesn't have nearly as much to offer, although I like San Diego and visiting the Santa Monica Pier when I'm in town there. But the coast lines of central and northern CA, as well as the Redwoods, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, etc. are spectacular to see. I had thought about including those parks in this trip, but I decided to stay on the coast for this trip, and one day I may hit those other parks when I'm out west again, which I'm hoping will be this summer.

The bay area has a quite different climate than Southern California. Rain Clouds and fog occur a lot. Oakland is clear a lot of the time but the climate in San Francisco is controlled by the Pacific Ocean. The farther north you go the rainier it gets. Notice north of the Golden Gate bridge it rains even more and the hills are green.

Well, my next road trip video will be to Key West, but not from Alaska. I did consider driving all the way to Alaska during this trip, but I couldn't get enough free time to do it, so that's why I stopped the drive in Vancouver; I plan to do a drive from Vancouver to Alaska, maybe next year - we'll see.
