I agree with this. I remember watching tv shows and Aquaman getting mentioned in it like he's the worst superhero that has ever been created, him being the butt of jokes and all, but that all got changed when Jason Momoa played him and making him freaking badass, giving him the respect he deserves.

Marvel and DC have gone in different directions on this subject. The first two Thor movies, as bad as they were, were beautiful to look at. The third one kept the vibrant color palette, but outside of Guardians of the galaxy and in very specific instances, Black panther, Marvel movies have this ugly grey filter to them that makes everything look well, grey and bland and beige. Don't know why they did that, but almost every day scene looks like it's somehow both overcast and sunny.

Then he slowly drifts down from on high, big golden cape flowing behind him, making him look like some sort of heavenly being. None of that was necessary. This meeting could have been conducted in some sort of private conference room, or in a prison cell, but that wouldn't be good enough fro Orm. He needed to show Arthur how much better than him he is.

It never occurred to me that the ending of Wonder Woman legitimately throws away the entire message of the movie.
@Netherwolf61005 жыл бұрын
Honestly when you think about it, that's the biggest problem. The ending. The movie sets up this idea that humans are capable of both good and evil and Wonder Woman is supposed to come to grips with this fact that despite humanity's evils, its worth protecting for the innocents that fill the world. The problem is, despite this fact, its made very apparent that Ares is the direct cause of humans enacting evil onto the world, meaning that without his interference, humans would have remained mostly pure and the events of the movie would have never happened. For the sake of a plot twist, the movie undid the greatest aspect of its narrative and that being; Wonder Woman's Growth. Think about it, outside of falling in love after knowing a guy for little under a week, what does she learn? How does she grow? In what way has her perspective been changed? She started off believing humans are good and worth saving and protecting and that they can only be lead astray by a god and at the end, that's exactly what happens. She doesn't develop, she's just along for the ride. That ruins the ending, especially when she learns that Ares is responsible and when Steve Trevor dies, instead of targeting Ares first, she attacks a bunch of random humans who are being influenced by *Ares* . Its sad but while Wonder Woman is a mostly good film, its ending was botched at best.

@rogericafort5 жыл бұрын
NO, the end of WW and BvS doesn't throwaway the conflict message of the film, both movies grow the characters by showing there is more than one lesson to be learned, and that life is more complicated than their original construction. WW learns that not only is evil at work at both the human and god levels, but she herself could be deceived by the evil god about the circumstances. Finding out life is not as simple as one thought IS growth. In BvS both heroes grow by ascertaining that their conflict was manipulated into being by the bad guy. They learn there are more heroes than the two of them in the world, and that the antagonist is capable of summoning monsters that go beyond this world (thus Doomsday is hardly a throwaway villian). What the poster is calling "inconsistency" is simply character progression and greater comprehension, in both cases.

@@sigrid.koppel The "Martha Test" is when you use a single interpersonal characteristic to resolve a plot problem without delving into why the problem is significant in the first place. In this case, "Martha", is the name of the Batman and Superman's mothers, was used to resolve their conflict without really addressing the cause of the conflict in the first place. The easier the plot is resolved with one example, Martha being what tied them together, the higher the score on the "Martha" test. For the Aquaman movie, his "Martha", that being his mother, wasn't used to *solve* a major plot point, only helped to drive that plot point toward its conclusion.

Then we need to establish very clear boundaries of what kind of criminal offences should merit actors not being given mainstream roles anymore. Because almost every single actor is a criminal. The use of drugs, for instance, is rampant and since they can get away with much more than an average mortal, they exploit their privilege. Amber Heard is by far not the only one in Hollywood who is abusive partner-the only reason her thing caught so much fire is because it fitted nicely within the prevailing political hatred that is ongoing across the nation, it's just a social media proxy war. You want to be consequential, we need to get rid of _all_ absusive partners in the industry and I guarantee that will result in quite a few of your favorite actors being fired.

Have to severly disagree - Mera was far from bland and forgetable. Giving her more of an arc would have distracted from Arthur and his journey. She filled her part perfectly - being Mentor and Sidekick aswell as romantic interest and even Comic relief - all in one. She gave exposition to the audience as well as being a counterpart to Arthurs personality when needed. They used her for the storys needs without compromising her character so that she would stray to far from her comic book origin. Its obvious she fights for Xebels people (not Atlanteans as a whole) being a good daughter to her father and proud princess for Xebels people. She learns as much about the surface as Arthur leanrs about the Ocean world.I agree with a lot of points of your analysis, but with Mera you are severly overlooking crucial details - at least in my opinion.
@XoOLelouchOoX5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, i can only agree with your opinion on this one, you cant forget that not every person in a movie and not even every "protagonist" if you wanna call her that which she is not since there is only one protagonist and that is Aquaman himself and we have his counterparts antagonists in the prince and blackmamba. Some might argue even Blackmamba is too much the movie was really full of stuff it pretty much exceeded with the stuff it wanted to tell. And then you want to give a side character more screen time to build her character up and her motiviations ? excuse me what... i think she filled her role pretty good and maybe if she moves to a stronger romantic intereset in a second movie maybe we get more character build up and that would be cool. Thankfully that didnt happen in the first movie. And not everything is about consistent i would say, it can be a strong point and it is in this film certainly but it doesnt have to be like that in every movie and it shouldnt tbh depends on the movie and how you handle the characters really. I like Aquaman quite a bit more than alot of people i know but wonderwomen everyone i know agreed is a much better movie from start to finish alot of it comes down to less confusing action and too much different story elements in one movie that were not build up correctly partly motivational wise and storywise.

I'd actually like to argue that introducing Ares as the main villain was to be expected. The entire reason Diana even decided to enter the war was so take him down. She knew he was the cause. The internal conflict she had of whether she should support humanity or not was underlying and was focused upon in the last scenes when Ares was trying to show her how evil humanity can be. Her decision was made when she realized that humanity can be evil yet gods can be too. Therefore it made her realize that good and evil go hand in hand. And she knew that if she joined Ares it'd be pure anarchy not only for humans but for other beings (i.e. demi gods etc)

@Kewryn4 жыл бұрын
Expected - yes. Executed properly - not really. See regardless to whether you see who Ares is or not, I was still with them when he makes his appearance near the end. And I find his monologue pretty convincing, claiming that he only "whispered in their ear", not actually making humanity do all the horrid stuff they did. It does set him up as a villain, but doesn't change the fact that humanity itself can be fairly bad... but than Ares is defeated and Germans no longer even try to stop their enemies, everyone is "buddy-buddy", which basically implies Ares was the only reason the war happened. Sure this all can be argued, but the point is the presentation does make Diana's prime conflict meaningless because it hints that humanity isn't to blame for the war - she just needed to find the "big bad" and beat his butt. The most compelling conflicts are always those were there is not clear right and wrong; that is why Marvel's "Civil War" worked so well - regardless to which side you support, both do have convincing arguments as to why they should be picked. In "Wonder Woman" that conflict comes down to that if humanity is to be saved, than you save both the good and the bad... but if the bad is the result of outside force (in this case Ares) that conflict loses meaning, because it gives a clear, right course of action (beat Ares and you only save the good).

The film unfortunately did a disservice to the depiction and character of the Greek Gods in general and of Ares in particular. The Greek gods were completely immortal, they literally could not die. Their immortality was the most defining characteristic and not their powers and to say at the beginning of the film that not only died but killed by another god is completely wrong. Also, the character of Ares is completely wrong. The God depicted as Ares is mostly the Roman equivalent Mars and NOT the Greek god Ares. Rebecca but we’re not told WHY she wants to stop this war, especially when she’s been living with the notion that humans are irresponsible and wasteful. What could’ve been a motivation for Mera is that she is doing this out of honor for Queen Atlanna who would’ve wanted to see Arthur succeed (just by that connection alone it also sets up an arc for Mera in that she will he the new Queen of Atlantis having learned from Atlanna herself as a protege)

Mera isn't out of character, she's defending her people yet her people are attacking *her* while working towards a goal that would bring her people to war, being lead by a psychopath. Mera has been written strangely in comics for years. Sometimes she's freaking awesome, other times she won't tell Arthur what she's doing and why, precisely like she did in the movie. You are essentially complaining about the character being true to character.
@ZeroRekoning5 жыл бұрын
I think the focus is how the character is presented in the movie. Not the character itself, like she can explain to Arthur those special soldiers attacking them are responsible for many different atrocities. That can properly explain her motivation to kill at the same time protect the sea people.

Orm/Ocean Master is by far, the best DCEU villain. Based on a lot of what you said in this video. His goals absolutely clashed with Aquaman’s, and he believed that what he’s doing was right. Plus, the final scene of him seeing Atlanna after 20 years was very powerful. As if all the anger and hatred he had held for Arthur and the surface world vanished. Like a full arc for a villain realising the errors of his way. Overall, the best villain of the DCEU so far in my book.

To be honest, I don't see Orm as the villain. I see Black Manta as the Villain because Manta wants to kill Aquaman for revenge. Orm doesn't seem to care about Arthur until he confronts him. Orm even says that he doesn't want to kill him before their fight at the ring of fire. Orm like General Zod is only trying to help his people. For Zod it was finding a new home, for Orm it was giving everything back that the surface world threw down to their oceans. Zod in the end turn full baddy, and Orm in the end surrendered once he saw his mother still being alive. Yes Orm wanted to take down the surface world, but you need to hear his side of the story. Even King Nereus who isn't a villain in this film believed the same thing.
@johnnynguyen92405 жыл бұрын
CavemanJesus4Life Exactly. A great villain is one who you can actually agree with and understand why they wanted to do something. Black Manta is a typical revenge-driven villain who was rotten to begin with. But I love him, because of his awesome suit and I love hating him. While Orm was not rotten to begin with, but he became like that because of the way he grew up without his mother. So both of them are great villains in their own right.

3:45 Diana's goal isn't to accept humanity, that doesn't even make sense as a character goal. If she wanted to accept humanity, she would just... do that. Story done. Her goal is to stop Ares so that the war will end. That's why Ares is the big baddie of the movie. Now, I think you mean to say that her arc involves accepting humanity for what it is, but only kinda. Diana's naivety is what makes her believe that stopping Ares will stop the war. When she thinks she kills Ares and the war continues is when she has doubts about humanity's true nature, but bc of Steve and everyone else, she knows mankind isn't purely evil. That's what keeps her fighting. She already accepted humanity long before this point. Now, the 3rd act kinda backpedals on this idea by having it turn out that stopping Ares actually does stop the war kinda defeating the point of that philosophical question. But it's not bad bc of character goals, it's bad bc it doesn't really follow through with its own ideas.

@@zina2141 Yea, I still stand by my point that that doesn't make sense as a character goal. Stopping a villain doesn't prove humanity is good, it proves that the main character can stop a bad guy. Let me explain it like this: In the Dark Knight, Joker believes that people will always resort to chaos in the end, Batman has faith in people though, but Batman's goal isn't to convince Joker that people won't go crazy, it's to stop him because Joker is out here killing folks. Batman having faith in people adds to the philosophical questions that the Dark Knight poses, but it has nothing to do with his direct goals. It has a lot to do with the arcs of the characters, but not their specific goals. Likewise, Diana has faith in humanity, but her goal is to stop Ares bc she believes that the war is his fault. Stop Ares, stop the war. That's her goal. She's not trying to stop Ares to prove that humanity is good, she's trying to stop him because he's a bad guy that's out here doing bad guy shit. The ethics of humanity is a theme, and is a philosophical question in the movie, but it's not a specific motivation.
