I've been keeping them as pets for over 10 yrs now. I absolutely adore them. Keep the males and females separate to control population. I like to breed for size, so I select only the biggest for mating. Don't underestimate their climbing skills tho; they can walk up glass and push open lids. Left the female tank open once... was up all night collecting them. They love to climb up furniture and sit on the males' enclosures. The males show no interest in escaping, they stay put and protect their territory. Appears to be the male pheromone that attracts the females.

I was at Petco a few months ago for a snake hide and saw they had 6 hissing cockroaches for adoption for $0.25 each! Now that they're comfy, they like to poke their heads out of their hides. They're so dang cute! 😍 I feed mine fresh fruits and veggies, dogvfood, and fish food. They absolutely love the fish food!

We just got them a couple of months ago at my petco that I work at as well. I bought all three that we got and my coworkers thanked me because they are all terrified of them. I have been obsessed with bugs since childhood so I couldn't say no! I have them in a 10 gallon terrarium with a locking screen lid and they are quite a delight to observe!

Hissers are definitely one of my favorite pets. I'm always advocating for them and I don't even like roaches in general because I've lived with pest ones. These guys are so cool though. Their care is so simple; I have mine in 10 gallon tanks added a vaseline barrier to the top rim so they can't escape, have a screen lid on it, then just feed them chicken crumbles and veggies. Some people don't like them, but I just use water crystals for water since sponges didn't work well for me. Also added a few hides and egg cartons. I got some fun pictures for my Instagram of them crawling all over a pumpkin hide and a skull hide. I have 6 colonies and 100's of them since they keep breeding. They're especially great compared to the dubia which were supposed to be my feeder roaches and just haven't flourished in the exact same conditions. The Hissers are so personable it took me a long time to start using them as feeders, but my beardies gobble them up. Though they do get a little big eventually for the bearded dragons (all except my Bastian who dives headfirst into their enclosures to grab the largest ones she sees. They seem to work pretty well for cleanup crews too. I added a couple when I made my bioactive ball python tank and everyone seems to be doing fine. My ball python is having good sheds, the isopods & springtails & mealworms are everywhere, and the hissers even share the snake's hide. There was a bit of an awkward beginning when hissers and snake met, but it made for funny video.

Like many of the species people consider "pests" or "vermin" cockroaches are just going about their business, trying to make a humble living. It's sometimes, or even often, human behaviour which is the problem. Leave rubbish out in the streets - rats and pigeons will clear it up. I guess an infestation of roaches isn't great, and people may struggle to control numbers once established even if they're taking all measures for cleanliness. But I've only seen single roaches "in the wild" and I kinda liked them. I saw some (live) exotic species in a museum and I thought they looked awesome! Education is the key, finding out where the little critters in the world fit in and the benefits they bring. Clint and Rus are great people to learn from. Can I get myself one of these hissers now please? (@ Mr A)

I had these as pets years ago and they were some of the coolest things that I ever cared for next to my Giant African Millipedes, and I could house them all together which was also cool and they basically ate the same foods, I ended up with a job that took more of my time than I wanted and made it hard for me to be able to spend the time needed to properly care for them so I sent them all back to a sanctuary.. I still miss them but I know that I did them all a favor.. Or at least I hope I did because I never did a follow up on them which I also regret not doing and feel terrible about.. Why do I feel this way about insects? THEY ARE AWESOME! THAT is why! Worth every minute of your time if you are genuinely serious about actually caring for them and giving them the best life possible.. So rewarding!

@@Aquarimax I love those wiggly antennas! I've been staring down all the various species like the hundreds found on Roach Crossing. A big unknown since most are kept as feeders. Hissers seem to be the most logical choice and would be my first choice but I'd love to see the others they have. I just don't wanna have to buy 20 darn roaches for a colony. I would only want maybe 2 males or something. I dunno how long they live and how you'd prevent having a ton of them. They wouldn't be feeders so it'd not be ideal to have more than a handful. Honestly I'm glad I'm not the only person on earth who looks at cockroaches and finds them cute and potentially a good pet! That means maybe those questions can be answered. Would love to find some people IRL who keep them. I'd much rather have a pet roach or jumping spider before ever thinking about having a cat, hedgehog, or opossum.

Great. Lots of information. I prefer Halloween Roaches. They are a bit smaller but very pretty and most beautiful in my opinion. Mine live as part of a mixed species vivariums. They absolutely love climbing and hiding. One thing that they have managed to do is tunnel their way through the background foam. Also potential escapees through the tiny air vents. However, so far only a few larger babies have managed to fall out as I have opened the doors.🐞

People never mention dubias as actual pets? Any reason why? Can't see why any roach species would be bad as a pet, especially knowing that somebody I know has reptiles and keeps them as feeders. Would be a literal free pet.

A big con with cochroaches in general is that they are very allergenic. Some speicies more than others. Discolids and dubias are among the worst. For me atleast. I cant even be in the same room as a dubia colony without having severe allergic reactions, and i really mean severe! I have little experience with hissers, but those are not that bad. "Red runners" i also can stand and use them as feeders. But in general, cochroaches are very allergenic. They can even be a cause of astma in many people. So as Clint sait about people beeing more affraid of cochroaches than snakes, it make sense in that aspect. I love all insects including cochroaches, dont get me wrong here, but i just cant stand them from an allergic person stand point

As someone who just lost a very "alpha male" hisser due to unknown causes (either he fell or it was natural causes, it was hard to tell and he was almost 2 so he was hitting the older years), this video makes me happy. I got 5 more, with hopefully babies on the way. It is surprising how much these little guys can crawl into your heart. Biggest question is, how do I know when the female is about to give birth? Mine look like they're about to pop and sometimes look like they're pushing...but then it just turns out to be poop. Maybe its the case of a watched roach never has babies but...I want some little ones!

Every month there was ad for Madagascar hissing cockroaches, and in the ad the person (probably a breeder) said they make the best pets. It wasn’t until very recently I got curious about them.

They are quite an amazing invertebrate pet, if you want something that is large docile, and easy to care for 👍

I'm looking for care info on Eupolyphaga Sinensis, or the Chinese Medicinal Cockroach. I can only find scientific papers on their uses, and how to 'prepare' them. I would like to know what temps/humidity/foods they enjoy. I have been providing protein, and dried fruits and veggies, but I don't see them out in the enclosure. I don't know if they are like Millipedes and hide most of the time. Thanks in advance if anyone has any information or sources!

Hey guys. Thx for the awesome video. Could you maybe help me. My hissers are infected with tiny white mites and i think they kill them (not the normal symbiotic mites). I have a feeling they crawl inside the roaches in the space between the segments. I tried to wash them off but that didn't really work. Plz tell me what i can do, me and my girl are loving them and we don't want them to die :( Thx a lot in advance

@@Aquarimax Yeah, it's so sad. Many of my roaches are dead and now i used flour to try and dry out the mites, but yeah, i don't really know if that works and also it's not an easy task with so many roaches. But i started to do it yesterday and the roaches are still alive and well. So yeah, i hope they are getting well soon. Love them so much, they are so cute.

I think speed and the shape of the eyes determine most of my fear with certain insects. Most cockroaches and wasps scare the chocolate bananas out of me, even in video. These don't, for some reason. I don't know if I would like the scritching of them plodding about on my hands, but I think I could at least tolerate it.

I just picked 2 lil fellas up at petco because I was buying fruitflies culture for my dart frog, but damn, I think I have 2 male because I was looking at those 2 big curved bumps on their head, cos I was looking forward into breeding them in the future.

Hi. I HAVE A QUESTION. I have gotten giant hissers for the first time from a friend and yesterday I have found one with murky, blue eyes. Do they go like this just before shedding, is it an eye mutation or something to be worried about like some sort of disease. Please let me know. Thanks!
@Aquarimax

Hmmm…not sure about that one, as I have limited experience with hissers myself .

Hissers don’t have wings at all, if you saw some fly in a video that was likely a different species.

The mites that sometimes live on hissers are commensal- not generally a threat to the cockroaches or to anything else.
