One feature of planted aquariums that a lot of people have trouble with is being able to grow carpeting plants. For those of us seeking to fill our tanks with green everywhere, it’s like the final boss. Carpet plants are an essential addition to your aquascaping toolkit that you can use to fill in the foreground and create lush, verdant growth similar to a lawn.
A healthy carpet in a display tank is striking and the benefits of carpeting plants don’t stop with the looks. They make a great habitat for bottom dwellers, shrimp and fry and provide shelter from bigger tank mates. Carpet plants also offer an alternative to floating or vertically growing plants in our planted aquariums.
When given ample light and carbon dioxide, in many cases, some of these plants will even pearl, creating cool looking air bubbles all throughout your tank. Since they grow near the bottom, carpet plants need more light than other aquatic plants to grow to their full potential. Many of these plants grow quickly, but some others are slow growing and need time to establish themselves. Choosing the right aquarium carpet plant depends on both aesthetics and how much light and nutrients you can provide.
When done right, aquarium carpet plants can make any aquarium look amazing. In the end, there are a good variety of plants, grasses, and mosses that will do the trick in low-light aquariums. I go over a handful of them in this quick guide and discuss some of the differences between different types of carpets!

It is what it is. With this type of content it's harder to make something "viral" and blow up like some other things. I really appreciate it, though. Thanks so much.

great video as always! no CO2 here either so I'll stick to dwarf sag and uneaten food for carpet. btw, gotta get me a few of those "mud" shrimp you showed a few times. Sweet!

They are nice to have but they need very specific water conditions. Very hard to keep around for long ;) haha

I've gotten the fish portion down. Personally like crayfish over shrimp but I've started to like the idea of an army of tiny colourful shrimp more and more. I can grow indestructible stuff like java fern and Amazon swords with some root tabs all day, but sending moss home with me is dooming it to death. I just cant moss, so I've never even tried carpeting. I love how it looks, I love fully planted tanks. Just kinda struggle with them alittle. From what I gather need better light and maybe a dash of CO2 and trim em down keeps from going up and encourages outwards. (Joking but also lowkey curious) Would periodically exhaling thruw a stray into the tank work for co2 infusion?
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 3 жыл бұрын
Lol, no. I don't think that would really do much. The CO2 injection systems keep the level consistent throughout the day. Blowing into it would just create some temporary surface agitation, probably lowering CO2 levels haha. Do you use any ferts? I dunno, I have never had an issue with mosses. Decent lighting and light fertilization and they just take off.

@@BobMossNanoTanks yeeee sounds like it's a lack of food cuz I'm a bad plant parent. And oh yea I guess the bubbles would be too intense and would gas off in exchange.

Haven’t had much luck getting a carpet established ,used Eco Complete but even the easy plants never did well . I also don’t have the patience it probably takes to get them started.
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 3 жыл бұрын
I have heard mixed reviews on Eco Complete, you may need to supplement with root tabs. And of course, lighting is super important for carpets. I had issues until I increased the lighting period.

If the plants were imported or grown emersed, then they would likely have had to get rid of their old leaves to grow new leaves for the new conditions. Sometimes they can appear to be dying or dead for a time while they do this.

@@tomshaji the root tabs are the main nutrient source, they are heavy root feeders and only pull from the water column in extreme circumstances. I, personally, just use Seachem Flourish tabs, as they seem to be pretty well rounded.
