Hey guys! First, these are axolotls, neotenic salamanders from Mexico. Second, I recommend using sand as substrate. If you want to use gravel, make sure the gravel is similar to the so-called 'axogravel' (by Aquaterratec), which means it has to be rounded (!) and smaller than 3 mm in diameter for adults. For juveniles I recommend no substrate at all (which is also fine for adults!). If the gravel is not rounded it can harm the axolotl's digestive tract while passing it. If the gravel is bigger than 3 mm (no matter if rounded or not) it can get stuck in the digestive tract, which can lead to the animal's death. Check out this video for my current setup (including sand as substrate): kzbin.info/www/bejne/hau4m6loZ8anmNU

AquaTerra-Life what type of snails would you recommend as tank mates? Because the local fish store near me have zebras and assassins but by the looks of it the assassins have quite pointy or sharp looking while some of the smaller zebra’s seem to have spikes on their shells while the large ones seem ok but I’m not sure I wanna risk them growing those spiky protrusions like the smaller ones
@AquaTerra-Life6 жыл бұрын
@@darkcreatures I have mainly added small bladder snails, as they can be eaten without causing any problems. I would recommend to not add zebra or assassin snails, as they can get stuck in the axolotl's mouth or digestive tract when getting swallowed. And additionally assassin snails have quite pointy shells. So, basically I'd only use very small species without pointy or sharp shells, that won't cause problems if getting swallowed. Shrimps like Neocaridina davidi make also nice additions to axolotl tanks. However, they will also get hunted and thus need dense planting to be able to hide.

hiitslucie first of all, these aren’t juveniles so these adults can have substrate which you know already, but this is were you were wrong. Sand is a good substrate for axolotl’s but the gravel he’s using is less than 3mm in diameter so it’s fine because if they accidentally ingest a bit they would be okay in the long run.

They still shouldn’t use gravel even if it is rounded and a certain size because all it takes is the Axolotl to swallow just a little bit more gravel than it normally does and boom it has impaction or constapation

Prime is the best product. some products have aloa added which is bad for axolotls. Prime is best and by far the cheapest. this does NOT cycle your tank. you have to cycle your tank prior to getting axolotl. takes a few weeks plus to cycle. the beneficial bacteria is mainly contained in the filter media. only minor levels are actually in water, substrate and plants. definately not enough to keep a cycle going after a tank change. best thing to do is sign up to Caudata website. its dedicated to axolotl and salamander. so many resource materials available there.

@AquaTerra-Life7 жыл бұрын
In summer the temperatures in my tank sometimes increase to about 23°C for a few days, but not more. There are different cooling methods, e.g. putting cold water or ice in the tank, using a fan which moves the water surface and leads to higher evaporation or special cooling systems/ chillers (which probably are best, but also expensive).

@AquaTerra-Life8 жыл бұрын
+Tibor Kluppel I keep different snail species in my tanks, mostly a small rams-horn species (I think Planorbella duryi) and bladder snails (Physella acuta). You can see the snails I keep in my tanks in my macrography playlist ( kzbin.info/aero/PLETIG8JUt5oQeJyZhzPf5TeXts_jAGstM ). The axolotls do eat the smaller snails. I use a normal external filter pump that runs ~8 hours per day (at night), I guess this increases the oxygen level a little.
@SwamiTibor8 жыл бұрын
+Aquarium and Terrarium Life Thanks for your quick reply! So you hang the filter in at night, because in the clip its not showing? Would it be possible to do without an external filter and just refresh 1/3 or half the water each month? I don't like to look at a filter. I'm thinking of increasing the oxygen level with the use of waterweed
@AquaTerra-Life8 жыл бұрын
+Tibor Kluppel I have this filter always in the tank, it is external so you can only see the hosepipes at one end of the tank. It runs only at night. This should be possible too, if you don't put in many fish or so, that would make much dirt. The plants and the snails will keep the waterquality at a good level. It would be like a small pond, the water changes would replace rainfall.
@SwamiTibor8 жыл бұрын

@MewMewGirl2128 жыл бұрын
The gill size is due to the water quality (not actually genetics as i first thought too) Weekly water changes would perk up their gill growth again, as even small amounts of ammonia in the water burn back the gills. @AquaTerra-Life6 жыл бұрын
Hm, first thought would be they might be stressed, which is often the case in small tanks, but yours is really large for two so this shouldn't be a problem. Maybe they are just hungry. Or they are stressed due to something else, like temperature, light or bad water parameters.
@erwanlg41786 жыл бұрын
AquaTerra-Life Thanks for your message back sorry for my english i m french and yes, they are maybe stressed due to the light sometimes. we give them 1 earthworms/day. The water IS at 24° and there are some fish with them
@AquaTerra-Life6 жыл бұрын
Then you should try to darken the tank. It completely depends on the size of the axolotl and of the earthworm, if this is enough or not, and also on their activity. In general, females' body should be at least as wide as the head (when looking from above) and males' body about as wide as the head, not much less. 24 °C is really warm, you should try to lower the temperature to at least 21 °C, better 18-20 °C. High temperatures can cause severe stress to axolotls, so this might be one big reason. Which species of fish? Fish can also be a stress factor, as they sometimes nibble on the axolotls' gills or bodies.

@AquaTerra-Life7 жыл бұрын
Well, I cycle my tanks like this: (0. If wanted, put in ground substrate and decoration/ hidings.) 1. Fill in water. 2. Put in lots of live plants (and I additionally put in some micro organisms form old tanks or my garden pond). 3. Install the filter (depending on the filter this might already be done as first step), and let it run (I always partly use filter substrate from well-cycled tanks, as it contains many beneficial bacteria and fastens the cycling process). 4. Let the water cycle like this for ~ two weeks (without old filter substrate it might also take longer, up to four weeks or so). 5. Put in the inhabitants. This is my way to do it. You might also want to take a look into the caudata.org forums, this article should also answer a few questions: www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml

How do you keep the water cold
@AquaTerra-Life7 жыл бұрын
Usually it doesn't get too warm here most of the time. On the few hot days in summer I just put some frozen water bottles into the tank to lower the temperature. There also chillers which you can use to cool the water, however they produce much waste heat.

Are there any fish i can keep with them and what do they eat
@AquaTerra-Life6 жыл бұрын
I mostly feed them with earthworms and occasionally with fish pellets and chicken heart. Fish are not really suitable as tank mates. Some keep guppys or other small fish with them, however they will be hunted and eaten from time to time. Bigger fish are not suitable, as they will nibble on the axolotls gills.

Where can you get axolotls
@AquaTerra-Life7 жыл бұрын
If you want to visit Germany you can get a few from my last breeding. :D Otherwise you might want to check the internet for local private breeders. Axolotls are easy to breed and therefor there are many private breeders. I personally wouldn't buy from a pet store, because they often keep them very wrong and thus have often ill animals.

Do you need aerator,filter,heater,and chiller?
@AquaTerra-Life7 жыл бұрын
A filter makes sense, I use an external filter. Aerator is not mandatory if you use many live plants. A heater is only necessary if temperatures are below 14°C or so (usually not needed in axolotl tanks) and a chiller is necessary if the temperatures are higher than 22°C (for more than a day).

15 gallon won't be enough for an adult axolotl, 20 or even 25 gallon tanks are better. You should check out my recent axolotl setup video, in this one I show which plants I use and explain some things. If you have any questions left feel free to ask again. ;) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hau4m6loZ8anmNU

10 gallons for an adult!? Axolotls like to move in their tank, and not to just sit and turn around.
@AquaTerra-Life8 жыл бұрын
Well, I wouldn't keep an axolotl in a 10 gallon tank, but as long as they have enough space to move around, okay. In Germany it is normal to keep single ones in at least 80L tanks (~20 gallon), and for two at least 100L (~25 gallon).
@breckenadam20768 жыл бұрын
The only issue with larger tanks are that the deeper the tank when they come up for air it is much harder for them the deeper the water is. So keep that in mind. Wider shorter tanks are best.
@AquaTerra-Life8 жыл бұрын
Do you really think this is a problem? If they want, they can be really good swimmers. They reach the surface in this tank in only a second. Plus they mostly use their gills and skin for breathing, the lungs are only used from time to time. But I completely agree, wider shorter tanks are best. Axolotls don't need the 'height', they mostly stay on the ground.

One is a clay tube made for wine bottles. I also use just stone plates that I put on each other to create small caves. The ones I used in my new setup (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hau4m6loZ8anmNU) are normal "fish caves" which I found on a German aquarium equipment website.

do axolotls need filter? i just wanted to started mine
@AquaTerra-Life7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you should use some kind of filtration, but without producing too much flow. For example Hamburger mat filters are very good. I use a normal external pump from Eheim that I let run at night, but it is directed to a wall so that it does not produce a strong current.
@jenniferk65418 жыл бұрын
When should I clean my axolotl tank?
@AquaTerra-Life8 жыл бұрын
This depends on many factors. I change water every 2-3 months, about the half of the water. But I have running a filter at night, that cleans the water. Also plants and snails in my tank keep the water clean. A smaller tank can be cleaned every week, you can change about a third of the water. Maybe every 2-4 weeks is also enough, depends on how much dirt the axolotls produce.
@PhoenIXPhantasies5 жыл бұрын
You should actually do between a 10% waterchange EVERY DAY to 25% EVERY WEEK.

Hey, I have a 132 litre tank for my one axolotl. Do I have enough space to get a second? Also, I just put in some new plants. My axolotl is a 2 inch juvenile(5 cm). He keeps nuzzling the plants with his face, is that normal?
@AquaTerra-Life8 жыл бұрын
+Rachel aitken Hey, there is enough space for another one, but if you get another one it should be ~the same size before you put them together. Did you wash the plants before you put them in the tank? You should always do that. Sometimes you can import illnesses or omething else with the plants. But maybe the plant just smells interesting, where did you get it from?
@marcelaitken46478 жыл бұрын
Aquarium and Terrarium Life I got the plants from a pet store. The pet store provides very good care for their animals and the plants were in a close to fishless tank. I did not wash them as I was unaware I should have. I'm new to owning axolotls so any help or advice will be much appreciated.
@AquaTerra-Life8 жыл бұрын
I see, they often use fertilizers which can be bad for your axolotls, so always wash new plants (and also decoration) with fresh water and put them in fresh water for a day or so before you put them in the tank. Axolotls are quite easy to keep. Make sure the water won't get too warm, 18-20°C is great, the temps shouldn't increase above 23°C for longer periods. And make sure they can't swallow the ground material or if they can make sure the gravel is small and rounded, otherwise it could hurt the axolotls insides.
@marcelaitken46478 жыл бұрын

@AquaTerra-Life7 жыл бұрын
