My axi's gills tend to shrink from time to time, and they've never developed like the axolotls I see online (with long, feathery gills). I was wondering if there's a way to fix that? He's a little less than 5 inches long at the moment, he eats well, and his tank is always clean. I don't know what's wrong...

When I was 14 I got my first Axolotl, and he was, I would guess given his size at the time, around 3 years old. He died just this year, I am 28 now, so that was 14 years ago. That would have made him 17 years old. He grew quite emaciated and frail, and at the end would no longer take any food. But I have kept many many axolotls and have never seen one get as old as he did, he was quite ancient. My other axolotl lived to be 12, and I currently have one that is 5, and he is quite young looking. I think they can get to be pretty old if kept right and fed properly.

I use quatz sand, and never had any problems with it, they can eat it, and It just comes out the other end. Fine sand can get stuck in the stomach. Axolotls do like to have grip on there soft feet. DO NOT bring them out of the water or they will die. If you're Axolotl goes straight then they are stressed, put a lot of hiding holes, turn light of and put something over the tank, helps them when they are stressed. Put a book right near the tank and they will read it. Check out what I said and then make your own decisions. And remember each to there own.

Can you add any bottom feeders to eat the poop up? Or a bottom filtration?
@GirlTalksFish6 жыл бұрын
Good question. There aren't really any aquarium animals that eat poop directly (besides unsightly detritus worms), and if there were, the axolotl would probably try to eat it. 😅 There are undergravel filters that filter from the bottom, but I think they require the use of gravel (not sand) as the substrate, which the axolotl may accidentally consume and have problems passing. Good brainstorming though!
@GirlTalksFish6 жыл бұрын
I have a couple videos on axolotl filtration and how to solve cloudy water from detritus you can check out in this playlist. Hope it helps! kzbin.info/aero/PLlBBJ7xBuquYnu3xeOImizJlG1ZaIqD3U

Corydoras, even fancy goldfish life ranchu or ryukin may be suitable, but other varieties like pompom or bubble eyes may not for obvious reasons, the axolotl could try to suck their protuberances and damage the fish. Though adult axolotls may only live with common and wakin tipe of goldfish.
@TheGrmany695 жыл бұрын
Loaches and pimelodus may be suitable as well, Raphael catfish too. There are some catfish in the SA andes known as "babositos" in Venezuela that are loach look-alike plecos, they may be de most suitable peer for axolotls because they live in mountain and feed on garbage and decaying matter.
@feylin4053 жыл бұрын
2:45 a bare bottom can actually cause harm to the axolotl if they have almost nothing to grip on to because they like gripping the ground to reassure them. it causes them stress when everything is empty, in this case the empty bottom isnt a bad idea because of the rockdecorations which is something they could grip onto. thats kind of a beginner tip tho. /lh /nm *anyone more educated on axolotl aquarium decor please reply and add onto this*

I use ultra fine sand for mine! I have a ten gallon with a sponge filter and a PVC pipe junction for its hide. He relaxes in the pipe a lot but sometimes he comes out to explore. I’m excited for my future with him, also for keeping the water cold. I simply have him in my basement and put an ice cube in everyday.

For my axolotl I like to use tile! It’s great because it makes him stand out! The only problem is that I have a hard time cleaning it because I break out when I touch the cold water! I have cold urticaria (basically an allergy to cold temps, I break out in hives! Yes it’s real!) of course I still do it often because I can’t not clean it 😂

Axolotl's are not actually from the mountains of Mexico, Ambystoma mexicanum is endemic to the canals of Tenochtitlan which is now modern day Mexico City. There are other Ambystoma found in the mountain lakes of Mexico like the Achoque, but the popular Ambystoma Mexicanum comes from Mexico's Central Valley.

I’m heavily considering getting one but I feel like I wouldn’t be good enough, I think I’d be confused on how to keep the tank cool enough and how I would manage to clean a 20 gallon tank, does anyone have any tips for how to clean it? Because the video kinda helped explain on how to keep it cool :)
@stacemc82793 жыл бұрын
Just get a suction vacuum and remove 25% of water once a week. Concentrate on vacuuming the bottom the most. You can clean down the sides with paper towel, rinse out filter and ornaments if needed. Replace the emptied water with water at a temperature similar to the tank and add water conditioner. I do it every Monday. Takes 20 minutes. The fish are healthy, the water is clean and clear, the fish are happy.

Hi, sorry I know this video is long time ago, (and sorry if I have any spelling or grammar mistake) but I search about axolotl in both English and Chinese. In China they saying axolotl don't like swim around, and a healthy axolotl will stay at the bottom and doesn't move. But in video I saw axolotls swim around and looks very well and healthy. So I want to know which imformation is true?
@GirlTalksFish6 жыл бұрын
Good question! Both are true. Juvenile axolotls tend to swim around more, and adult axolotls tend to be pretty sedentary and will stay still at the bottom of the tank. Also, axolotls do have different personalities, and some axolotls like to be more active than others. Hope that helps!

Just curious, how do you say "axolotl" in Mandarin? I've been calling them 六角恐龍, but not sure if that's what they use more in Taiwan versus China.

I would never get worms from Walmart or a bait store to feed my pets I've heard they use chemicals to help get them out of the ground to catch them and my pets don't need that in their life I would rather go to a pet store where I know the worms are pet friendly

That's plenty of room! They actually don't really move around a ton (especially as adults when they get bigger). Honestly, I think the "10 to 20 gallons per axolotl" guideline is more for waste control and water quality issues... they just poop quite a bit. 💩😅

Something to remember because they are mostly bottom dwellers, linear room is more important than height. So look for a long tank if possible. But either way, more water I'd better for ease of cleaning. So important to have a good filter. I also find live plants help use up some of the waste.
