Great video!!! I was shopping at pet smart the other day (for my cats, lol) and stopped by the live fish to see what they had. And there was a ten year old boy with his family and he had a ziplock bag with water and a dead fish in it. He wanted to find out why his fish died and how he can save the other one he had. The young girl gave him fairly accurate information but went in a little to heavy with the details, cycled not cycled, etc. You know the stuff that beginners are clueless about. They looked at her like she was speaking a foreign language. So I waited a bit till they walked off I pulled out my phone showed them the ACO KZbin channel and told them about the website. They were excited. I didn’t tell them about the blogs I forgot but, I believe your educational videos and blogs are priceless and hopefully they will to and learn a lot!!! Thanks for being awesomeness you guys!!!!

I think ember tetras are the hardiest and easiest to keep fish I ever owned. They can handle a lot of variety in water parameters and are small so you can fit more into a tank than the other fish on this list.

Hard second this. I felt like there was a huge missed opportunity when he mentioned plecos but failed to mention how HUGE they can be, as well as life longevity. As a kid I had an 8 inch pleco stuck in a 15 gallon bc I got it when it was like 1.5" and had no idea how big it could get, poor thing had no room to sucker around, but still kept kicking for a long time. He mentions some of the smaller fish and their average sizes but not the potentially bigger ones, plus he also frequently refers to making sure to get a group for the schooling fish (which they do definitely need), but that also really requires attention to tank space and projected growth of everyone inside and I didn't feel like he emphasized this as much. Overschooling in a small tank too small can easily lead to stress, sudden chemical imbalances, and reduced quality of life, even if the fish being crammed end up surviving for some time. Since this is a beginner video, a lot of viewers might have smaller tanks or not be familiar with all those concepts a more experienced tank owner would actively be thinking from the get-go. I love the info provided and do think it's a great video, but minimum tank size needs should be a basic topic to address as well.

Khulli loaches are probably my favorite! Sometimes they are hard to find in the tank, once I thought that I had lost 4-5 of them over the years but then I rescaped my tank and found all 9 of them going strong. Some of them will have fun "personalities" and do things that you don't expect like someone I know had one that would work it's way up into the top of his filter and hangout almost all the way out of the water.

So, I wrote this down as you listed them off. If I want to put this exact group in one tank, is a 40g breeder large enough? If you could double check the numbers too, that would be cool. The last bunch you didn't give out recommended schooling numbers. Black Neon tetra - 6 to 12 Kuli loach - 3 to 6 Bristlenose plecostamus - 1? Harlequin rasbora - 6 to 12 Albino cory 6 to 8 Cherry barb - 6 to 12 Red(eye) monk tetra - 6 to 12 White cloud - 6 to 12 Siamese algae eater - 3 Endlers livebearer - 6 to 12 Thanks for reading if you made it this far down the list 😁

I love my cherry barbs, they are my favorite fish. I think I can add some stuff about them: 1) Females are gorgeous, don't listen to Cory 2) They also do the peacock thing just like the White Clouds 3) They really like to dig in the ground for food just like Corycats so a soft substrate like sand is ideal 4) The males can be territorial, so better keep them at a ratio 2:1 females to males 5) They are ravenous feeders and will outcompete slower fish 6) They are very curious and have great personality 7) They love plants and hiding spots 8) When they feel comfortable you'll see them all the time

Having started keeping fish October last year I picked up a Bristle-nose pleco, pretty much for all the reasons you mentioned... what no one seems to talk about is the sheer amount of crap these produce!!! (until you google each of your fish to find out which is making the monstrous amounts of faeces! lol) I think it would be great if beginner videos highlighted this sort of thing more because maintenance is one of the basics alot of beginners struggle with and the amount of poop these guys produce can really cause water condition issues if not kept on top of!!

Excellent recommendations. Years into the hobby and those are still the fish I prefer. Peaceful tropicals. I live in an upstairs apartment so I'm limited to several smaller tanks. 2 I'd add to your list are pygmy corries, and my latest fascination which is neocaridinas. I've always heard that you should keep a 2 female to 1 male ration with the cherry barbs to avoid the girls getting worn out from being chased by the boys. You seem to indicate that a 1:1 ratio is ok. I tend to believe what you say more, so if I decide to keep them again I'll have to remember that. I love my little bristle-nose even if I do only get to see usually his tail end scurrying away from me once every week or so. Any tips for getting to see him more? He seems to really enjoy his Sera "wafers with wood" that I feed him, but he must sneak out in the middle of the night to eat those. He's in a heavily planted community tank. It's what I call my "retirement" tank where the odd balls from diminished schools go to live out their final years i.e. I've got 1 harlequin rasbora left from a school. He's been seemingly happily living for almost 2 years now solo. There's 2 remaining neon tetra and 2 cardinal tetra that pal around together, both were at one time part of a school of 7 each in two different tanks. There's a couple of black neons, and my 1 remaining female cherry barb in there. All peaceful no aggression problems. I also bought a mix of 1 dozen red rili and bloody mary culls from a local breeder just because I like how they keep the plants looking so nice. I didn't think they'd do that well because I know tetra will eat shrimp fry, but they've exploded into probably 100 or more. So now they're getting spread to other community tanks. I even put a few of the less colorful ones into my Betta tank thinking that if nothing else he'd have himself a nice snack, but no no Bubba seems to like his shrimpy friends so now they're starting to reproduce in his tank too. I also bought some subwassertang from the local shrimp breeder. That stuff seems to grows like a weed in my tanks. The betta tank is full of it so the shrimp do have a safe place to duck into, but after a couple of weeks they were out free swimming with the lights on and my betta doesn't even chase them.

Saw Emperors tetra in the thumbnail. Can't agreed more ! I had some of them like 15 years ago il my old old old tank, actually it was my dad tank, now that I'm older it's more my tank than his tank, I love taking care of that 90 gallons. We had a lot of babies that survived, they go through a lot of algae problems, tank changements, medications in the whole tank, etc. And still now I have 2 left of them at this day, they're very old ladies tho. I have some Rasboras with the emperors too. They're super calm, but kinda shy and seems like they're sensitive to medication a little, but they're pretty and easy.

Nice, a lot of my favorite fishes in this category. I would say though, that I miss some of the bigger tetras like black tetra, bleeding heart or diamond tetra (though the diamond tetra can be aggressive). As a lover of kuhlii loaches i would strongly recommend to make an aquarium, centered around these fish, or just overstock the aquarium with them (like 50 for a 30 gallon tank) - then some individuals always show themselves :) The one problem I have found with kuhlii loaches is that often they are wild caught (I think) and I have had quite some that died shortly after I got them, it turned out to be retained eggs, I could imagine they have some spawning migration where it is easier to catch them - any thoughts on that? Also I think you are mixing the "Siamese algea eater" complex up, I think you show pictures of both the Crossocheilus oblongus and the Epalzeorhyncos kalopterus, but I am not sure. In my opinion it is the Epalzeorhyncos that is the number one algea eater and the most peacefull, it has 4 barbs around the mouth compared to the Crossocheilus that only have two, but I know that people will disagree on this subject.

The photo of the "SAE" you showed at 16:58 is actually a Garra cambodigiensis (stonelapping minnow or false flying fox). Can see its a G. Cambodigiensis because the black line doesn't go through the caudal fin and it has a red ring around it's mouth. Also the mouth is more underneath the body than the mouth position on a SAE. It's also got slightly yellow fins with black markings. Garra is a great algae eater and never stops eating algae in old age. Will also eat almost any other fish food. Probably won't eat black beard algae though (never had any when I had the garra so can't say). It's extremely hardy and great for beginner fishkeepers. Can be aggressive with similarly shaped fish and best kept as a single fish unless you have a very large tank.

I'm a beginner and bought a tank 20 days ago (waiting for silicone to cure). I put sand and driftwood to soak in plastic tub at the same time for acclimating. 2. I'll be setting up substrate and hardscape tomorrow in tank and do 70% water change for next 3 days (to get rid of excessive ammonia and dust particles) 3. On 4th day planning to add filter and some pothos plants to help cycle the tank naturally and daily 30-50% water change for 2-3 days depending on how dirty water looks 4. Then add aquatic plants and leave it for whole month of Feb with weekly water changes of 30-50%

Many years ago I bought a few males and a whole bunch of female Cherry Barbs, even though they are "beginner fish". They quickly became my favorite fish in the tank. Just amazing color on the males, and even the females take on a very pleasing bronze color. The males chase the females all day long, which is hilarious to watch, and a good reason to get lots of females for each male if possible.

When you were talking about the harlequin rasbora you showed footage of all the three common trigonostigma species, heteromorpha but also hengeli, espei. You probably won't read this but just in case I wanted to let u know if you don't already.

I think the hardiest fish I ever had (besides Oscars) is the albino Tiger Barb. My mom put the poor thing in shock, still alive, forgot the water chemicals, where others woulda died, still kicking. I also know some folks are picky on their plecostomus and algae eaters, I personally like the Rubber Lip (or Rubbernose) Plecostomus. Really thrived in my Oscar tank, the one I had in there got around 19" when she passed. Started up a Bala Shark Tank last week, and here's hoping he's as well as she was. :)

As a lover of Cherry Barbs, I gotta say, I like the females. my males died awhile ago, and I've had (well now only 1, sadly the other two passed away recently, I think just from old age) 3 cherry barbs for around 4 years (so pretty old for a fish lol), and I quite like them. So unaggressive as you said, and for awhile they were kind of my centerpiece fish as I didn't really have much else that could be called a centerpiece (just neons, white cloud minnows, and a few guppies). Now I added 2 honey gouramis who have taken over as the centerpiece, but my lone female is actually surprisingly active considering she doesn't even have a family anymore.

I have a blind neon tetra, whenever one of the other neons touches her she freaks out and runs into things. Should I give her her own tank? If so what size should it be for just her and should I avoid putting any decorations in it, and what kind of filter would be best to avoid her being hurt when she brushes up against it?
@kiri23234
@kiri23234 4 жыл бұрын
How long has she been blind? Fish should be able to navigate using their sideline organ that can detect changes in water movement caused by their own movement, other fish and obstacles. Maybe she just needs some time to adapt. If not, an own tank without hard objects, maybe with moss covering the aquarium glass might be the best option.

Got 12 Albino Cardinal Tetras a short while ago. They look phenomenal in my densely planted tank, with a few older leftover glowlight tetras and my wild-caught guppies. Kuhli Loaches are my favourite odd fish. I see mine poking out every so often, and its one of those fish you are always pleasantly surprised to see.

from what ive noticed siamese algae eaters do not eat black beard algae when its healthy and strong, but if you weaken it with easycarbo they will eat it. these fish are also fairly long lived, the two left from my school ate turning 10 this year.

I've actually caught my cory "blinking" on camera! It was the first time I've ever seen that or knew they could do that. Mine is a Peppered Cory and I love it so much. Used to get the albino ones but wanted to have a different one this time. I really want a green gold or a gold laser cory as well lol.

It’s either I’ve got a good batch of Cory catfish or they’re truly a beginner fish because to me, they’re impossible to kill. Just today I’ve only killed (accidentally) 1 adult because it got stuck in the top tube of a sponge filter. Had no idea it was in there until I cleaned my tanks.

Bristle nose are REALLY the best at getting rid of the ugly algae build up on gravel, decorations, rocks, wood, glass, etc.. they poop soooo much but in my opinion it's so worth it. I'd rather have to suction up poop nore often than dealing with ugly alge build up on things that are hard to clean. Also, blck neons being hardy is so true... never had one just die on me or get sick like the regulr neons do.
