I'm surprised the Frontier didn't do better. I have several thousand rounds of the 75-grain stuff I bought back when it was on sale for $.40 per round, and it's some of the most accurate ammo I've shot in any of my rifles. I'm also surprised the M855 did so well, as it's generally not known to be super accurate due to the multiple component construction of the SS109 projectiles. Most of the XM855 I've shot was made over 10 years ago when Federal was running Lake City, and it groups like someone was patterning a shotgun at 100 yards.

My experience with M855 is the same as JR15A2. It is not an accurate ammo for me in my Ruger AR15 either, but I still have the iron sights and old eyes. I need to put a scope on it to really see what she will do with different ammo. Still enjoyed the vid.

Good shooting Tools. You might have been able to dial in the heavy ammo but then you world probably mess up the lighter ammo zero. I typical stay with the 55 grain stuff myself. Have a great weekend and thanks again for all you do. Be safe and ever vigilant.

Try warming up the barrel before you try your zero. Shoot about five rounds rapidly; Then try your groups. My Bushmaster M4 Patrolman needs this done when I zero it. Another great video Brian. Keep them coming..!!...

Check out ballistic advantage. They are amazing barrels for a cheapish price. Picked up a Hanson when they very first came out. Definitely a accurate rifle.

Agreed the 855 is surprisingly accurate for me. And the Frontier ammo just isn't. In fact I had pressure issues in my experience. Now 68bthp from Hornady are quite accurate with a # of powder/primer combos I have loaded. I have had more consistent accuracy with Sierra 69 Match King. But the 855s have outperformed the Frontier ammo in our range seasons. Thanks.

I have 2 of the Ruger MPR one like the Hornady frontier 55 gr shoots around moa but loves the 75gr frontier I have shot 1/2 to 3/4 moa groups on a good day the second mpr doesn't care for and 55gr but does good with Imi 77 gr. But we all know barrels like what they like

Nice review. Curious if the reason for the expansion of the last rounds of groups was from the barrel heating up some? Some past zero's I done, and others I have read, also seem to feel a heated barrel and the thickness of the barrel can possibly cause larger groups if done back-to-back? Had that thought crossed you mine? Just curious, as I have noticed it in lighter barrels. A lot you read on the net can be taken with a grain of salt, so your videos do help some to break up those theories. Thanks Tools!

I think it is a good idea to go ahead and build a .223 wylde, I know we talked about that in the past and you were not super keen on the idea because like you said it is basically the same thing as .556 but there are some accuracy gains to be had with the wylde and it is still interchangeable. Either way I think you will be hard pressed to do much better than that first group you put on paper with them 855 anyways have a good one brother see you on the next one.

1.5 MOA from a rack grade AR works :) I would have shot more than 5 rnds per group to see if it was just one flyer. With that scope and the 62 gr ammo, I'd get a 24" heavy bbl and bipod for 800 yard work. And no, the bbl isn't too hot from your shooting. The AR isn't bedded like a bolt action deer gun. It's made to work while hot.

The 5.56 was optimized for Twenty inch barrels. So you will get the best ballistics out of it. Never understood shortening barrels for compactness. Deal with optimal barrel length. If you want to save weight and get the convenance of shorter, go bull pup. That is have your cake and eat it also bs!

Good Day Sir, Again Nice Video, Did some Testing yesterday on the Range. (My eyes are not the best) Had some 63gr Geco .223 & Some PMC X-Tac 55.6 55gr with me for Testing. The Geco 63gr printed between 1.5 to 2.2 (flyer included)" at 100m with my vortex strike eagle1-8x28 (just on 5 zoom) The PMC X-Tac did good Around 1.5" zo 1.8 (with flyers) Have to Find me some 69gr and up to 77gr stuff for testing. My current conclusion is that a "bigger scope" helps the accuracy a bit in therms of "when i can see it i can hit it better" isch?! I testet 5 different 55gr brands and the are between 1.3 and 1.6 isch . Will do further Testing... right now i think that the 69gr to 77gr will be probably in the same ballpark of max 2.2" mostly due to the 1/8 twist barrel who is suppose to do fine with almost all weight's between 55 to 77gr isch. I'm now have to find me some 69 to 77gr stuff what is harder to come buy or pretty expensive ^^ (could take me a while again) Will keep you postet from my side of the Pond. Have a good Day.

Following is the stuff i had with me / on hand: PMC Brone 55gr FMJ .223 / PMC X-TAC 5.56 55gr FMJ (M193) / Geco Target .223 63gr FMJ / Hornady Black .223 75gr BTHP / S&B Precision .223 77gr BTHP OTM / PMC X-TAC MATCH .223 77gr (Sierra MK bullets) BTHP. (no 69gr stuff sorry) Rifle Setup was the same as Usual with the vortex 1-8x28. The Result was what i expected.... When i take my time and try to go slow and steady i could squeeze off some nice groups (5rds) with all of them. i got between 1.3 to 1.5" groups with the 55gr stuff, the 63gr the 75gr and 77gr... yes i had some bad groups when i rushed it and pulled 2 shots (flyers and i was shaky... to much Coffee before shooting) per group and they opened up to 2"+ My conclusion is the Rifle is plenty accurate and Can make a sub MOA group and average 1.3 to 1.5" group happen when the setup (scope, shooter & ammo) is right. It actually furthers the Point that the 1:8 Twist does exactly as advertised. Also is a "Do all Good" isch Rifle. BUT i will stick to the more affordable 55gr stuff i can get ^^ and give enough precision i need. ALL in all it Furthers your Point and all the Test's you did as well. The Ruger MPS is a good Budget / mid. Range ar. Have a good one. greetings from Austria.

Haven't watched the video yet but ran a group with Winchester m855 in a psa 10.5 ar at 50yds after zeroing and it was under 1/4", just a small ragged hole, was absolutely shocked to see that kind of accuracy from ANY of that stuff, especially with just a 4x athlon scope, kinda made me sad that I was getting rid of it after I seen what kind of accuracy it could produce, I mean how in the world is a cheap psa 10.5 upper with regular ol winchester m855 possibly capable of that? Too bad the cost of the ammo went up cuz I wanna get more of it and test it from others, see what kind of accuracy I can get. While I was typing all that, looks like you got some pretty dang good accuracy with it as well! It kinda baffles me cuz everyone always says that although the bc of m855 is decent, they also say it tends not to be all that accurate, but at least in mine and your testing, the winchester seems to do real well

Not always but usually the heavier longer projectiles do better with a different twist. Good shooting with the green tips. Did you try the illumination any? Good price & good ratings on the 4x16x50. @@ToolsandTargets I like to hear clicks - even at my age - & like to feel it lock in so I don't worry about it vibrating loose. I have the heavy 16.5 inch barrel with a 1/9 twist & most rounds do well. "Stats" say 1/7 twist is best for 68gr & up but I think there are too many variables - barrel thickness , rifling depth etc. If it hits the target 🎯 it's done the job. You need that 5.7mm Ruger LC Carbine now to try. 😆
