I love the 5.7 30 rounds on tap and almost zero recoil. This ammo looks to be a real contender. I hope Hornady gets lots of it out to market and I wish they would sell the FTX projectile alone.

I’m an executive protection officer in a major city ….. 5.7’s specific use case is perfect for us….. i’m often in heavily populated areas where I am likely to not have a permissive backstop ….. the lack of over penetration from 5.7 and the ability to put laser accurate shots on target at speed makes it ideal for that type of work ……

FN doesn't make the FsN like they used to. The cam is much weaker on new production units, and it can't handle 48k PSI loads. The high pressure loads are what made 5.7 good.

I was amazed at the 2300 fps velocity of the 5.7 out of a 16 inch barrel. Then I remembered the larger heavier Underwood 357 Sig 65gr XD round gets a velocity of 2200 fps out of a 5 inch handgun barrel. Then I wasn't so amazed at the 5.7 any more.

That's sold performance from a 40gr expanding load in this caliber. Meeting penetration depths will be hard when they expand to any meaningful diameter, so it's good to see it did it from the pistol barrel. The P90 is a little shy, but does have velocity on it's side. Our PDW results should be a good happy medium. These might have the velocity to do what 5.7 is known for. Thank you sir!

Ok, I have never been a fan of the 5.7. This test got my attention. My wife is shorter than a groundhog's leg. She can shoot my AR's ok but still a little front heavy. I use my PSA 10.5" in my vehicle when I'm around the farm. It's pretty good for her but it's subject to be gone when she needs it. We're having coyote problems right now. I'm taking them out when I see them but 3 of them mugged her dog last night. I managed to get to her before any real damage was done. I had my G17 but they scurried into the corn before I could mow them down. That P90 looks good for her. I still won't buy one probably though until the ammo becomes more affordable. Great test Tools!

Fantastic video as always. I am DEFINITELY getting this ammo the minute I see it for sale. While I do occasionally carry M&P 5.7, it IS my primary home defense pistol. The main reason why I chose this caliber is because I shoot it better than 9mm due to its low recoil. Also with higher velocity ammo like this you are getting a bit of velocity based tissue damage. So overall I'm quite comfortable with the amount of damage that even SS197sr does. But this new Hornady Critical Defense ammo is DEFINITELY a step above that in performance. I use Critical Defense 9mm as well in my 9mm carry gun due to it's consistent performance. It's not the best in all calibers as you know, but it's definitely a great round in 9mm and for sure now in 5.7 as you just demonstrated. I hope that the Buffman - R.A.N.G.E channel does a test of this ammo on body armor to see if it penetrates Level IIIA soft body armor. He's a big fan of 5.7. Now I'm just praying that Hornady cranks up production so it becomes easily available.

Always appreciate (And respect!) people being honest, and presenting the facts/reality of what they're shooting. It's a VERY welcome change out of what we continue to see shoveled at us by ohsomany other places! 🙂 I 'Retired' my trusty-dusty Ruger P85 (9mm) which I CC/Open Carried for decades, with the Ruger 57, three Summers ago. When Ruger later introduced the 'LC Carbine' in the same caliber, I paired that up with the pistol, and have been enjoying both ever since. I like the ballistics of this particular form of the 5.7x28 cartridge, very much! Expensive as heck (And that's saying something considering the regular cartridge isn't 'Cheap'!), but if it'll do what I pray I never NEED it to to, then it's worth its weight in gold to me. Thank you, very much, for taking the time to make and share your videos! :-D

Tools, thanks for this! I FINALLY got out to shoot 4 of my guns I hadn't taken to the range yet, yesterday. As you know I'm usually a day late in seeing your videos, but my son and I took my PSA Rock and my Keltec P50. Both of them were outstanding. The Keltec, with the promag magazines (which shocked me) and the Speer Gold Dot and the AAC vmax. Had one AAC fail to go boom. The fioochi was a mess. Searching last night for ammo for it I came across the critical defense not in stock but it occurred to me NO ONE has shown any testing with it. Wake up today and here you are. Now if I could only find it! Thanks buddy, I swear you and I are thinking the same thing most of the time. 😂

Great video. Very informative. It's interesting that ammo expanded more quickly and dumped it's energy sooner at higher velocities, resulting in less penetration depth. I found the same thing happened with Speer Gold Dot ammo in 45 ACP during some testing many years ago. Projectiles are designed to work at an optimum velocity, as this 5.7 ammo demonstrates.

Thanks much for the test. 5.7x28 really seems like an answer to a non-existent question. Out of the pistol, it's easy to get that energy with a bullet that starts our larger than this round achieves after expansion. Out of the short rifle, I might as well carry a .223 SBR because I'll get more of everything.

Remington tried to replace the .22 Manum with a 5mm round decades ago. They even made two decent bolt action rifles for the round. Never saw one the rifles and never saw a single box of ammo.....I can say the same for 5.7X28 except I have to include handguns in the never seen one for sale in this area mix too. Of course, the same can be said for the .30 Super Carry....No ammo and no guns.

Tools: I agree with your conclusion about 5.7x28. In fact, I put it in the same category as .380: useful in limited scenarios (e.g. extreme concealment) but requires a great deal of research to get a capable loading. Also, I tend to agree with the venerable Paul Harrell's pov of "hyper" ammos - I want something that I don't cringe when I periodically shoot it at the range instead of leaving it in a carry mag, or on shelf, for years just waiting. Thanks for another informative testing session.

I appreciate this testing, and this seems to be the best-performing commercially available 5.7 ammo...but I think some perspective is in order: .32 ACP FMJ - "expanded" (fired) diameter: ~.32", penetration in gel: ~12" - 14" 5.7 Hornady CD (pistol) - expanded diameter: .34", penetration in gel: ~15" 5.7 Hornady CD (rifle) - expanded diameter: .37", penetration in gel: ~11" 9x19mm FMJ - "expanded" (fired) diameter: ~.36", penetration in gel: ~40" 9x19mm generic HP - expanded diameter: ~.60", penetration in gel: ~12" - 18" So out of a handgun, you're getting .32 ACP FMJ terminal ballistics (generally considered underpowered and inadequate). But instead of a tiny, easy-to-carry pocket gun, you're carrying a full-sized gun. Out of a rifle, you're getting worse than 9mm FMJ performance that you can get out of any random polymer compact. As you say in the video, 5.7 has a very specific use case, but for anything else, even with the "best" ammo, you're better off with a bog-standard 9mm.

@@ToolsandTargets I bet the anonymous sender was the manufacturer. This ammo is nowhere to be found. Everybody has it listed as shipment expected or simply out of stock. Good on you if it was Hornady because that gives your work the credibility it deserves 👍💯🇺🇸

The designed intent of the 5.8 was a personal defense tool that could penetrate body armor and helmets that would stop a 9mm, using specific AP ammo. Huge capacity ( 50 rounds) in a compact P-90 ( select fire ) platform. The AP ammo is restricted to military and LE, never available to the public. EVERYTHING else is an ‘almost as good’ compromise to boost civilian sales of ‘cool’ tools. Almost anything 9mm and above has better performance on a non-armored target. And way less $$$ to do so. My 2 cents.

I ended up getting the PSA Rock 5.7 because I initially bought the Walther WMP hoping it would work well because I prefer 22 WMR over 5.7 due to availability and cost of ammo but the WMP is just way too unreliable even with the recommended ammo - So, I got the Rock and it has been absolutely perfect. I'm getting rid of the WMP and keeping the rock, definitely a 5.7 fan now.

Okay, see, now THAT is good performance! Why can't the other ammo be like this? That's great performance, I'd have that!

As someone who does their best to consolidate all the ammo I have and keep as few different calibers as possible. 5.7x28 is one of the few exceptions I make just because I think the P90 is so cool. I'm glad to see the performance of the Hornady round but I wish companies would give us full power loads and quit with the wimpy stuff. The 5.7 market kind of reminds me of the 10mm market: All the ammo from big companies is pud loaded and you have to go to some lesser known or boutique company to get anything close to full potential.

New production FsN cannot handle the high pressure loads. There's a good reason it's falling out of vogue even among the lovers.

Thanks for the test! Sure wish they'd sell that projectile as a component! But at 1800 fps, that should suffice.

It would be nice if they would at least get some of this out in the wild for sale. Companies love announcing stuff and then waiting months to actually deliver.😆

I’ve been largely disappointed by most 5.7 ammunition that I have seen tested this still wasn’t I want out of a handgun or sub gun but is a far cry better than what I normally see.

Great video my guy, I think the cost to shoot is just does not make sense especially when you can carry and shoot 9mm HST or gold dot with better overall performance.

You can keep the 5.7...only 5.7 that ill rock is the 3 57....sig or magnum....BOTH of those putting out more energy out of 3 inch barrel than the 16 inch ps90.....and 357sig has some 68 grains that do over 2000 fps from a 4.5 inch handgun....so...all good 👍....

I’m bout to try some 35gr ntx in my 16” ar. My 40gr v max run 3390-3400fps and put down couple .5” groups with a 9x Nikon from Walmart. Have the 77gr nosler rdf that groups awsome too just can’t load em out long like they should be and fit in a mag..pointiest ones I’ve found. 🎯

I really like the idea of the 5.7, but like you say...for that price to get real self-def. performance...it is just waaaaay too expensive. 9mm and .40 for the win.
