Some lights have the remote switch circuit isolated from the tailcap on the light (like Cloud Defensive Reins), so you can completely destroy the entire switch / switch cable, and the light will still work with the tailcap button. Gives you some nice redundancy.

This is also why it's good for righties to run theirs on the left. Plus with an offset or surefire pro mount that puts the light at a 45 where you can just use the button on the light with no tape switch. It's obviously the best way for a right handed person. Do it however you want but there is a best way to do this from an ergonomic perspective.

Guys can tell you what they have and do, and that's fine, but in the end, it makes more sense for you to put something together that works for you than something that works for the other guy -- and doesn't feel quite right for you. When I mount my flashlight, I plan to put it where I can hit the on/off with my left thumb -- wherever that may be -- because that sounds comfortable and convenient. Hell, I like to run pistol lights on all my carbines. I figure the odds are, if you're far enough away that a 1000 lumen pistol light won't give me an ID and aiming point, well, I probably shouldn't be shooting into the darkness anyway, and I damned sure aren't going to be mounting a full size alley light on a carbine. And I catch a lot of flak for preferring my light at 12 o'clock so I can hit the switch regardless of which shoulder I'm using. And since the light is above the bore but (barely) below my sight line, I can rest either side or the bottom of the handguard on the barricade both muzzle and light will clear the barricade. But I damned sure don't tell anyone who runs their stuff differently they're going to get "kilt in da streetz" just because they don't do it *my* way. As long as you train with your set-up so you know what you can and can't do with it, even a "dumb" set-up will work better than a "perfect" one you don't ever train with.

I run Surefire Scout Pros on the offside/outside mounted to the top rail so that I can reach it with my thumb in a C-clamp, and the light is not obstructed by corners and barriers when shooting strongside from cover. I have the same setup on several rifles because I think it makes it easier under duress. I don't really like variety though. My wife knows what to get me from every food joint because I find something I like and stick with it. You can call it boring and predictable. I call it consistent and reliable. the correct answer is: there is no correct answer I mount my lights differently depending on the type of light and the space on the rail. I try to favor the right side of the gun (im right handed) so that the light is less likely to snag on my gear and the light inevitably leaves a shadow on a suppressed weapon, so I cant the weapon to the left so the shadow casts towards the floor and I can see everything from the ground up (if that makes sense? hard to put into words for me lol)

Lights forward and on the shooter side have helped avoid Suppressor Burns, that is true. Generally, a Light on the Opposite Side of the Gun from the Operator not only makes the light target that it becomes will not necessarily be in front of the operator's head when shouldered. It also allows no shadow cast to the Right of the Muzzle where the eyes will be needing to see things when carried Right Handed. Thus, while my doctrine has reason, the use on Operator's Side to be a bumper guard against suppressor burns on a transition is MORE IMPORTANT Doctrine than mine for the Flat Rangers. Military need to transition to side piece is really rare. As ARs go to Pistol Length, we are seeing very little real estate for Lights and lasers on the Handguard. The High mounts offer locations for Lasers and Scopes and especially getting that laser directly in Line with the Optics Reticle. Lights will remain on the hand guards, and I am seeing Pistol Lights getting placed on Handguards these days, for there is just no room for switches. Pistoled Rifle Calibers that make sense are 6ARC, 6.5G, and 300 Black, and not to forget the 8.6BLK. On 12" Handguards you can get switches on pistols for both Laser and Light, even in one place. On my 9" HG I had to go to an unconventional switching set up for the laser that activates upon simply gripping the HG, and the deploy Light is optional. Lights and Lasers with field serviceable/changeable batteries are preferred, But the Pistol layout a bit prohibitive against 18650 and 21700 powered Lights, and 1x CR123 Green Lasers if you do not go to the high mount on the Receiver that serve the Optic and Laser. Sacrifices and compromises will have to be made in order to make them work.

@@JARG Thank you. I have made edits to be a little more clear. I believe that High Mounts are the future on these short barreled systems, and found that they better serve Operations while Armored. I am getting any Optic array I desire, a CR123 Laser concentric to the Bore while getting a thumb over hold, any even ridiculous Light Tech on the HG, and even, a Brass Catcher. This is all Pic Based so it can migrate from the AR with its Buffer Tube Weakness and Charging handle Forced Face weld break, Meanwhile, the Higher mount on the Red Dot configuration is that you just raise the Dot to your Eye Level, not craning the neck to get the head down at all, and punch the dogie. Yes, there are still trade offs between Techniques and those that have been surviving professional will not often diverge from their Training, until, as with all things, they work, until they do not work. Stay frosty
