I have a set of these pool balls, I got them from A.E. Schmidt Billiards, a local dealer here in St. Louis when I bought my Olhausen table from them in 2002, the upgrade ball set was part of the price of the table. They play great, I clean them with Aramith ball cleaner every 4 to 8 weeks as needed, they are plenty shiny, especially after cleaning, the table wasn't used much until I retired last year, now I shoot every day. Thanks for this review and finding out why they aren't on Aramith's website, I always wondered why I could never find the Aramith "Standard" model pool balls.

First off, thanks so much for making your videos. I recently installed a table myself with the help of your videos and it came out much better than expected. I actually purchased a set of these balls about 2 months ago. After being played fairly heavily for that time, I would agree pretty strongly with all of your points. They play excellent, and still look great. The only exception being as you noted that they tend to mark up a little worse than a higher end set might. I usually clean them weekly with a microfiber cloth and they clean fairly well. The cue does tend to hold a little more discoloration than the number balls. These are probably the perfect set for anyone who wants a quality set of balls to play with but cannot justify $300+. I find that they are an excellent surrogate for the sets that see play in our higher end pool halls at APA events or tournaments.

Yes, the design looks a little different and is definitely a nice design. It works well with that design with the 'floating' numbers on the stripes being in a nice modern font. A traditional font would have looked odd on this design. And yes, it definitely does give some extra visual markers which is always useful for lining up shots!! First of all, thank you for the video, I sincerely appreciate it. Second, I'm a nerd, lol. I have been in quality assurance in manufacturing for a few decades now, and appreciate the measurement data you provided. I did some quick analysis on the data you provided and here's what I found: For the weight data: You will occasionally get balls that are over the WPA standard requirements. Using +/- 3 Sigma, is predicts that somewhere around around 27 parts per million will be defective. That's pretty damn good IMHO. For the size: You will see many defects, both over and under tolerance. The caveat to that is that to actually perform a capability study that has reliable data, you'd really need to measure to another decimal place and have many more data points, preferably hundreds. The 0.005" tolerance is fairly tight, so the precision of the measurement matters, a lot. Keep up the great videos!! I'm subscribing to the channel right now, really like the reviews.

Numbers in the white space helps a lot of colorblind players from misinterpreting the 9 ball from the cue ball when it sits at just the right angle.

Is there a way you could test the balls for balance/roundness? You measure the ball's size with calipers, but you only get the measurement in one dimension. I've played in taverns with, I would assume, cheaper balls and you soft roll a ball down a perfectly balanced table and the ball rolls off due to being unbalanced. I'm curious if it's possible to determine balance and roundness for straight and accurate rolls.
@AverageJoesPool
@AverageJoesPool Жыл бұрын
That's actually something we would LOVE to be able to test for. However, the tools (machines!) required to test that simply make it not practical unless you are actually manufacturing pool balls where the cost can be absorbed. That said, there are practical tests that we always do, including looking for balance and roll issues (exactly as you mentioned). But to measure a sphere for perfect roundness is absolutely doable, but requires some very expensive equipment! Of course, manufacturers such as Aramith have such equipment, and have such good quality control (from what we've seen recently at least) that it's unlikley that any balls coming from them would be off-round to any degree that could potentially affect performance. For other brands, however, that could be a very different story and quality control can vary a lot! Will the cue ball work properly with a Velley coin op table? If not, do you happen to have any recommendations for a good cue ball that will work properly in a coin op table?
@AverageJoesPool
@AverageJoesPool 5 ай бұрын
It's likely your table has a magnetic ball return system, and so you'd need a magnetic cue ball for it. The cue ball in this set (and all of Aramith's sets) is not magnetic. The best cue ball for a Valley coin op is probably the Aramith Tournament Magnetic which has the green logo. You can pick it up for around $25-30 from most pool suppliers. Yes, you're definitely not alone there. Opinion is divided on whether the traditional colors (like this Crown set) or newer TV-orientated colors are better. Thankfully Aramith make standard as well as TV color versions of most of their sets that have the TV color options, so if you prefer traditional those are also available. And for their cheaper sets, like this Crown set, they use traditional colors as standard with no TV option. Hope that helps! 👍
