I am wondering why they didn’t make the 4 and twelve balls in the light purple and the 5 and 13 balls in the salmon color? It would be closer to the traditional number/color combination that most of us are used to.

Some of the coolest looking balls I’ve seen- I’ve just ordered a set. I genuinely do find it easier to quickly tell the solids and stripes apart. Can’t wait to play with them

The biggest problem is the fact that the traditional purple 4-ball gets confused with the new purple TV 5-ball. Too many people have had mental lapses and shot out of order. Why didn't Aramith keep the 4-ball purple and make the 5-ball pink?
@AverageJoesPool
@AverageJoesPool Жыл бұрын
Yes, the light purple 5 ball can indeed cause confusion, and likewise I've seen video's of professional players accidentally playing the purple ball out of order for a foul. This came about because the color changes were made in two batches. It was deemed that dark blue and dark purple were a little too close in color for watching on TV or small screen devices (phones etc) and so the purple 4 ball was changed to pink for the Tournament TV set. A nice upgrade! But then, a little later when developing the Tournament Black set, it was deemed that the orange was too close to the red and the new pink for TV! So they wanted to change the orange 5 ball, BUT they had already assigned pink to the 4 ball so that was off the menu, so light purple was chosen. But purple used to be 4, now it's 5 but lighter. Hence the confusion. In retrospect maybe the best changes would have been dark purple 4 to light purple 4, and orange 5 to pink 5. Or even leave orange 5 as orange, and instead change red 3 to pink because red is closer to pink (light red!) than orange. That would have made the most sense, I feel. But because it was not all done at the same time the options were limited. Ah, the beauty of retrospect! Maybe they'll change it again in the future on the next big update to a final and idealistic colour set. But if you change the colours too often it will get even more confusing, so it's a togh call!!! Maybe changing the orange 5 in the Tounament TV set to light purple would help? Right now the 5 is orange in the Tournament TV set, and light purple in the Tournament Black set - both sets commonly used in Tournaments = more confusing for players as not consistant. I feel for Aramith on the colors TBH. All will be resolved, either way, with time. Nice review, lots of good info. For scoring you shouldn't adjust the weight/size/quality/performance scores to take the price into consideration, as price/value has it's own separate score.

Great in-depth review - you mentioned the black/duramith cue ball has less chalk retention. Do you know if the tournament (non black) cue ball is also duramith? Or is it the standard pro cup dotted cue ball?
@AverageJoesPool
@AverageJoesPool 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, it seemed to have a little less chalk retention on intial testing, but (as covered in the video) it would need more in-depth testing to confirm for certain - and we're planning a Duramith vs Non-Duramith video comparison for the future! Yes, the cue balls in the three Tournament sets are all Duramith, but the Pro Cup spotted cue ball (available separately) definitely is not. The only Duramith balls are the Tournaments. However, it is worth noting that the Super Aramith Pro balls sets and the Tournament balls sets are made from the same resin (Super Aramith Pro resin). The Duramith is an additional process applied to the same resin during manufacture for the Tournament sets to improve resistance to wear (but NOT, in theory) ball performance. So Super Aramith Pro and Tournament sets should play identically, but the Duramiths (Tournaments) should last even longer (up to 40 years for residential use, compared to approx 25 years non-Duramith). We'll be doing a full Aramith Super Pro ball set review soon and will cover this in more detail. I don't understand why they didn't change the 4's old purple to the new purple instead of pink, then the only real big change is the orange if you change that to pink instead. They went with two major changes instead of one for some reason...
@AverageJoesPool
@AverageJoesPool 9 ай бұрын
Yes, you are correct. The reason why it ended up this way is because the color changes were done on two separate occasions, and once the first change was done they could not revert and so Aramith made the next changes based on the already updated colors (rather than traditional/original colors). If all the changes were to have been made in one go then it's very likely we would have different colors than what we've ended up with over the two separate changes. They could have had a purple 4+12, and a pink 5+13 which would be closer to tradition
@AverageJoesPool

Yes, there are a few variations which people feel would be better. The colour issue is because the change was done over two stages, and so come the second stage the options were already limited by what had been changed before. If the changes had happened in one stage we would, for sure, have a better overall choice of colours. Would you say that the cue ball is really yellow ?
@AverageJoesPool
@AverageJoesPool Жыл бұрын
This is actually something that I have discussed directly with Aramith, and the whiteness of the cue ball can vary due to the phenolic manufacturing process, sometimes whiter, sometimes a touch more yellowish (but still white). And this can vary from batch to batch on the same product, so there is definitely some variation on this part of the production process. Since when is Black Pool played on American sized Pool Table &. My friend in Australia says his bar box Black Pool Balls are 2 inches in diameter, with a 1 7/8 diameter Cue Ball.
@AverageJoesPool
@AverageJoesPool Жыл бұрын
Blackball pool (or just Pool if you live in the UK or other regions where it is standard) is played with 2" balls, whereas US Pool is played with 2 1/4" balls. US 8 Ball and Blackball are essentially the same game, with some rule variations. The name in the title of this video is referring to the color of the balls, rather than the game played with them. These balls are called 'Aramith Tournament Black' and differ from Aramith Tournament's as these have the black poles on the striped balls. Hope that makes sense!! :-)

You're not alone on that, many people prefer the traditional colors. Do bear in mind that on the Aramith Tournament sets they make three different versions, the cheapest of the three has the 100% standard traditional colors. Hope that helps! 👍

I would like to know how you determine your ratings at the end. You give a scale from 0 to 20. Your ratings on this are in fact arbitrary/subjective unless you provide us with some sort of baseline for which we are to measure against a mythical perfect ball set. In other words, what set of specifications would make for perfect 20 out of 20 scores on a set of balls phenolic resin balls and poly-balls, because you can't compare these against one another? In that I mean you have to compare poly to poly and phenolic to phenolic. And, I suppose that the cost of a ball set would have to be considered. I mean, would this poly-ball set for $20 have made these 20/20's? Would a higher price put them lower on your scales? (see...kind of getting more complicated here) For instance, in your review of the poly-resin balls ($30 for that set) that you did in another video test, in the 'score for value' segment, I would have scored them a 19 out of 20 myself, but what would have pushed them into the 20 out of 20 mark with the materials and manufacturing that were used to construct them? Also, I would have rated them much higher on 'score for quality' at 15 out of 20, unless you think that the weight drags them down (it could be that the material that they were made from is denser than phenolic resin while needing to keep them within a target size range, i.e.- can't make them smaller to get the weight down) that much. Thanks for maybe looking into this a bit more. I would also understand if you didn't want to "go down the rabbit hole" too far with this as well.
@AverageJoesPool
@AverageJoesPool Жыл бұрын
So, as you mentioned, we don't want to "go down the rabbit hole" too far, especially in a comment reply. We are hoping to add more details on the criteria if/when we are able to get our website up and running. We spent some considerable time devising our own unique scoring criteria, and yes you nailed it when you said "And, I suppose that the cost of a ball set would have to be considered"... The very short version would be to think of the reviews being done in a similar way to car reviews. If you scored simply on performance/quality etc without considering price then all of the Ferrari's, Bentley's etc would score 20, and a Toyota at a fraction of the cost could NEVER score 20 because it can't match the Ferrari in any factor (without considering price). So, car reviews work a little differently, they factor in what you are getting for the price you are paying... You have an expectation of what you are buying based partly around how much it costs. Example, If you bought a brand new car for $150,000 and it had leather Recaro sports seats you would not be surprised, you'd EXPECT that kind of thing for the cost of the car. If you then bought a $25,000 car that had exactly the same seats that would certainly be impressive at that price! Likewise, if you spent $2,000 on one cue and $150 on a another you would have different expectations of each. Assuming both are good cues, then the $150 cue should still (in theory) not be able to match the $2,000 cue? So price is definitely a considered factor when scoring a product across all categories. As you mentioned, yes all review scoring is subjective, that's the very nature of reviews. But we think our system scores as faiurly as can be considering the various factors, and as our body of reviews continues to expand you'll have more data to cross-examine. But that's as far down the rabbit hole as I want to go here, but that gives a basic outline of criteria we use to help scoring. Hope that's helpful 🙂

Yeah I found this confusing as well. If they are "exceptional" and even "outstanding", why only 16/20? That's 8/10...that's only a B+, which means good, but significant room for improvement. If they are nearly perfect, which is what I gathered from the description, then 18-20 would be the proper score. At no point do you indicate any weaknesses in the 1st 4 categories, which means they aced your test, which means A or even A+. I understand the Value score and pretty much agree, but the other ratings don't seem to make any sense. I do enjoy your videos, esp cue reviews.
