In the Church of England they are allowed to get married, have marital relations and a family. I think that celibacy and guilt/hang ups about sex just warps human sexuality in an unhealthy way. A lot of people aren’t capable of repressing their sexuality and just pretending that it doesn’t exist, which is what the Catholic Church seems to ask of all it’s ordained clergy and laypeople. Yet churches that don’t by their nature completely screw their ministers up in the head about sexuality, still harbour many abusers. He shouldn’t feel shame that more was not done by the Church of England. He should feel shame that he himself personally didn’t do what was needed to stop this and instead covered it up and lied about not having knowledge of it to earlier. That’s what he should be ashamed of. His very apology is an attempt to displace blame onto others. And sure there were plenty of others to blame as well. And if as soon as he was told he had leapt into action, suspended this man, informed the police and launched an internal investigations. Then he could say he feels shame that the church let this happen. But he didn’t do any of that stuff. He instead personally participated in enabling the sexual abuse to continue. And that’s what he should feel shame for above all other things. It’s what he would feel shame for if he was a moral and empathetic person

The position of bishop over centuries was foremost an appointment of a favoured individual to govern lands, populations and therefore gain wealth. A religious belief was way down the list! Therefore we should not be surprised that significant traces of this "tradition" continue with individuals such as Welby achieving such powerful positions. Welby tendered his resignation to a monarch who was involved in covering up a certain bishop's illicit activities, was friends with a Mr J Saville and appears to take no action against the activities of his brother. My word, our institutions continue to be rotten!
