Excellent presentation, NU. As a former jarhead sniper, I can tell you that even something as simple as a heartbeat will have a significant affect on your sighting, especially when using a long-range rifle. I could see evidence of your heartbeat (transmitted through your hands) to "throb" the laser point ever-so-slightly it in the video. Plus, after a not-too-far distance, the laser cannot be seen during daylight operations. No laser sights for this old Marine. I'll calculate "my dope" using the old method and put a round where it needs to go almost every time. Keep up the great work, NU. I thoroughly enjoy your channel although I am not an archer.

The way I see it: bare bows are like pistols, agile, fast, good for short range, while Olympic style recurve are like snipers, slow, big and precise, better suited for long distances. Each one requires a specific and different skill set. You don’t see people bothering a sniper saying he should take of his scope, so people should stop annoying Olympic recurve archers about their sights….
@randomnobody6607 жыл бұрын
you don't, except a sniper serves a practical purpose, whether olympic style recurve is a sport. If you are an actual soldier, nobody cares what you use. You can use all sorts of performance enhancers if you wish, you may sabotage the enemy, you do anything to win. Sport is not like that. The way i see it, we expect athletes who compete at the highest level to do incredible things. Yes, even with gadgets taking away some of the things you had to do, it is still a test of skills, but there's a limit of how much is ok. Say would you be ok with using a sort of kick stand to hold the bow steady as well? The aiming part is still there, the drawing part is still there, it just helps with aiming more, why is a kickstand different than stabilizers? What about using a crossbow instead? if you are ok with people using a clicker to help with draw length, a crossbow basically does the same thing, except better. You see, it is all about scale. This isn't just sophistry either. If i recall correctly, olympics swimmers can't use high tech swimwear. clearly your "Each one requires a specific and different skill set" therefore any gadget is ok as long as skill is still involved argument does not apply universally.
@NUSensei7 жыл бұрын
Crossbow is a competitive division in World Archery. As with all sports, there are rules and regulations, and it is a competitive sport where people can shoot better than others using the same equipment. A hypothetical kickstand would be impractical for a bow, but in the spirit of the comment (in the same way modern shooting sport has this), we would come to expect that shooters will still distinguish themselves in skill through shot execution, but with the score gap being much closer. The swimwear example was controversial because people with the high-tech suits were competing against swimmers who didn't have them. It became an issue of haves vs. have-nots. If there was a separate event or classification that ONLY uses these suits, then we'd again see the direct comparison of skill between athletes. A good competition is one where the participants are able to distinguish themselves in meeting the objective. As long as rules and regulations clearly promote an equal playing field, it is valid. Whether it is fun to watch or do is a different matter.
@randomnobody6607 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the information. i was not aware of the reason why swimsuits were banned. As for the rest, I agree with the level playing field one, thou i would argue a "good" competition has to half more than just that. Again, to take things to the extreme, i would say for example aiming a crossbow on a stand to shoot at a relative close range is not a good sport even thou it does provide a even playing field, and those better at aiming will do better. Now if i were to define what i consider to be a "good" competition, i do think spectator value matters, especially when it is an olympic sport, which i believe is more than just a competition to see who is better at something very specific. These games originally played to please gods should have entertainment values, and since very often people associate national pride or are otherwise become quite invested in things they normally do not care about, i feel like the feat should seem at first sight impressive too (it would be quite woeful if, say, the US had more medals than anybody else because their team won all categories of staring contests). (I think you will agree with me a staring contest, or a drinking contest for that matter, takes some skills, can be done on a even playing field, and still be a bad competition, at least for an olympic game.) I do not mean to say that olympic archery as it is now is such a bad competition, rather my point was really about that i do NOT feel (while the original poster seems to) that it is equally absurd to suggest a sport should have different rules than to suggest a soldier should not use everything he can to survive and accomplish his mission.
@rodrigoamattei7 жыл бұрын
Leaving aside that I was referring to sniper in a competition scenario (yes, it exists) and not on the soldier in a mission scenario, that was only an example in order to make a point. The thing is, and if you have ever shot a bow you’d know it, one of the hardest aspect of archery is to hit a target that is far away. If you have a good instructor, basically anyone can hit a close target with a bare bow with maybe a year of training, but to hit a target at 70m away consistently, even with all the gadgets of an Olympic recurve, you need years, some times more than 10 years, and even then you may never get to be good enough to be competitive in an international level, without the gadgets it would simply be impossible. What they did in an Olympic competition was getting one of the hardest aspects of archery and turned that into a sport. Since it’s more entertaining to see people hitting the target than missing it most of the times, they allowed the use of sights. Witch by the way are optional, the competition actually is “freestyle recurve”. I’m from Brasil, and here we have project where our national team brought native-americans (who are the best bare bow shooters I’ve ever seen) to train Olympic archery, and even they, in the Olympic competition setting, have to use all the gadgets available in order to consistently hit the target at 70m
@randomnobody6607 жыл бұрын
Forgive me for the misunderstanding then, and thnx for the info. The biggest problem I see with this argument you present is that you are starting with the assumption that the target is always 70m away. Of course it is hard to hit a target far away, that goes without saying, but exactly HOW far the target is is always up for debate. I do not see any inherent flaws with an archery competition where people shoot without clickers at say 60 or 50 meters away. If we were to go back to the sniper analogy, imo the main reason that analogy does not stand is because sniper rifles existed with a scope before the competition came about, whether bows did not have stabilizers and clickers prior to the competition. This rests on our concept of what is normal. I would argue most people's concept of the most generic sniper rifle includes a scope whether most people's concept of a generic bow does not include stabilizers not clickers. Since i would argue similarly most people's concept of a pistol does not include a scope, asking archers to remove stabilizers from their bow is like asking shooters to remove scopes for their pistols, both are perfectly reasonable. On that note, your argument for stabilizers is akin to a gunner saying it's not realistic to hit a target from more than 40 meters away without addons, to which I will also ask, why not move the target close then. Once again, there;s nothing wrong with having a competition where people use stabilizers, just as there is nothing wrong with a pistol competition that allow scopes, but asking for one without either addon is not absurd, and the discussion is not trivial; it is not at all like asking for a sniper's scope to be removed. Is a sniper without a scope even still a sniper or does it just become a high powered very accurate rifle?

With a firearm, there is a line of sight that starts at you eye, moves through the sight, and ends at the target. This line intersects with the trajectory of the bullet and that is where your sight is sighted to. At any other distance your shot will be either above or below the target. With a bow, this is amplified since the arrow will have much more drop than a bullet. That is why many bows have pin sights with 3-5 pins for different distances. its because each pin is only useful for one set distance.
@JarlSeamus7 жыл бұрын
An arrow actually has the exact same drop as a bullet. It's a function of gravity. All objects fall at a rate of 32 feet/second Squared. The difference is a bullet travels exponentially faster. For example, say an arrow is fired at a target and it takes it 1 second to get there. (arbitrarily 500 feet) Gravity will cause 32 feet of drop in the projectile over the course of 1 second. A bullet fired at the same target will get there in a fraction of that time, so the amount of drop from gravity will likewise be a small fraction of the arrows.
@Eagles_Eye7 жыл бұрын
SSniper14 PB to add to the other guy, an arrow actually jumps up away from the bow before it comes down to where you were aiming. You don't aim it up to compensate for the drop. At first the arrow will actually fly higher than where you were aiming. For example at close range you would actually aim far below the horizontal point of the arrow otherwise you would hit to high due to the jump, at a certain point the arrow will hit at the exact height the bow was. And any distance after that you do have to compensate for drop and at that point the arrow drops really really quick unlike a bullet. Edit The higher the bow draw weight the flatter the trajectory. I got a 35# falco storm it has a rather fast arrow but it still jumps the arrow +- 60cm higher than the straight horizontal aim point at a distance of 18m I don't know exactly at what distance my arrow actually hits dead center horizontally but my guess is around 25m before I compensate for drop, now I actually compensate down because of the jump. Add to that I don't hold the arrow horizontal on my normal draw due to my anchor point so it adds another 20cm to the compensation downwards If ( I don't) if I had to use gap my arrowtip actually hits the floor below the target to hit the bullseye on the target

Yes, which means the downward speed after one second is 32 feet/second. Which means the average speed over that 1 second was only 16 feet/second so it dropped 16 feet over that second. Speaking from personal experience (i.e observing/communicating with other people at the local ranges I visit), all these barebow vs freestyle arguments often disappear once a person actually gains enough experience in archery regardless of what discipline they decided to follow. The concept of "consistency" and "variables" within the context of archery are sadly things that people really have to experience themselves before they realize if they truly knew what the hell they were talking about when they initially brought up those arguments.

I thought it was interesting that you used a graphic of Marvel’s Hawkeye. I am not a follower of the comic, but I do enjoy his character in the movies. I assume that his fictional, high tech bowsight within the movies employs some sort of range detection to target, along with active guidance of the arrow while in flight. Essentially, a fire and forget weapon. Hawkeye selects a target, has the bow show the target to the arrow, and then releases. Really just a small version of how a guided missile works today. Tracking a locked target through some part of the EM spectrum, and the fletching using active guidance fin technology to intercept the target. Given the level of miniaturization we have developed, such a weapon is probably practically achievable today. If you were willing to have a twenty million dollar bow and two million dollar arrows. Thanks for your series, very enjoyable.

Yep. Breathing and even heartbeat will make your aim point move. Experienced shooters (guns/archers) know how to compensate for those natural deviations.
@sciverzero81977 жыл бұрын
don't forget muscle shake. Muscles don't squeeze perfectly, and even if they did, perfectly consistent levels of pressure wouldn't necessarily be desired, as anything that alters the aim externally, needs to be manually compensated for as well. This is why you shake more with the 'deathgrip' than the loose one. With a loose grip, the bow is being controlled mostly by the hand that is drawing, and the pivot point is at the bow grip. The shake of the draw hand will contribute much less deviation than the grip hand, at the same pivot (for geometric reasons). However with a death grip, the bow is being controlled almost entirely by the grip hand, meaning any deviation due to heart, breath, or muscle tension will be amplified. And yes, experienced shooters can compensate for jitter, but not 100%. You would need a shooting vice mounted solidly to a concrete floor and even then footsteps in the room might still shake the bow to some extent. Having tried laser sights myself.... I found them useless in any kind of free aim. Only when using a rest did the sight become visibly stable enough to get any idea whether it was even on the target. Lasers are overrated and usually a waste of money... lots and lots of money...

I'm a (target) pistol shooting instructor and even though I have never held a bow, I'm fascinated by your videos. It's interesting to see how much apparently completely different shooting disciplines have in common. I struggle with the same problems with beginners; getting them to accept that they can't hold perfectly still, they can't even stand still. (Try it; your body rocks slightly back and forth no matter what you do.) The most common beginner problem is that they try to force the shot when "it looked perfect", instead of focusing on the trigger action and sights and just let the shot happen. The fact that they must focus on the sights and not the target comes as a surprise to many as well.
@jayeisenhardt13377 жыл бұрын
I think about standing completely still I heard somewhere you have to become dead weight and that goes against your balance and makes you heavier. I haven't tried it but might look into those people that play statues and stand still all day. Maybe lowering you own center of gravity?
@demopem7 жыл бұрын
Not still enough. Even the "statues" are not standing completely still. It might look like it from a distance, but it you'd look really closely you'd see that there's a small rocking movement, just a few millimeters. This, together with the equally tiny movement in your arm (which you can't hold perfectly still either), is very apparent when you're aiming sights at a target 25 meters away. The problem some shots have is to just accept it. It might cause them to "freeze" and not take the shot soon enough, and/or force it with a jerking movement which ruins the shot completely. But, as you say, there are techniques to *minimize* your movements, but it will never be perfectly still. A great shot (Olympic level) once said "A [pistol] shot who is perfectly still is dead." ;)
@BennyCFD7 жыл бұрын
At the competition level it is exactly the same. Shot for shot consultancy. Even for combat. the same grip, draw, sight picture sight alignment, trigger pull, every time for consistent hits. Same thing for archery. Pistols are customized to minimize the human factor and maximize consistency. Grips, trigger and trigger pull weight, The slide ported, the barrel magna ported, compensators etc. Archers have all their stuff to do the same stuff for them.

I noticed FPSRussia shoots the 44 magnum and 500S&W where he raises the gun, lets it drop until he gets sight picture and BANG! recoil jolts the gun up, let the gun drop slowly until sight picture, BANG! REPEAT. This is due to the fact that a Revolver especially one chambered in 44 Magnum or 500 S&W is gonna be front Heavy thus there's gonna be gun sway. It wouldn't surprise me that Revolvers are the reason people used to shoot Instinctively aka Point Shooting. So yes, the way you shoot your 60lb Recurve with Laser is definitely ideal. Compound Bow would be more forgiving.

I am cross dominant right handed and left eye dominant, with only 50% vision in my right eye. My left eye vision is perfect when using glasses to correct for astigmatism. Tried several conventional sights, cheap to expensive but with no success. Fitted a laser sight, fine tuned it. Bingo hitting the target every time, sure it shows up shake more but it is in effect a lever with the ratio of draw length to target distance. (This is a good indication off what I need to correct). This ratio does no change except for distance range. I can compensate for range easily. Without the laser sight I could not do archery. So I feel it is very useful under these circumstances.
@rodneyletts93804 жыл бұрын
However the amount of shake is still the same regardless of sight type the laser shows it up more clearly so it can help you to compensate for it as you have better optical feedback. In my case and opinion a laser sight is a great help. Your argument is fundamentally flawed.

I'm surprised anyone thinks you can remove muscle shaking entirely. Our muscles do not work that way. A good example is the draw weight mechanism in the AccuBow you used in the video. You adjust the draw weight by rotating a dial, which presumably stretches the string and *locks* it in place. This string is now perfectly fixed at that draw weight, and you can draw and release the string repeatedly without affecting draw weight. Muscles in our arm, however, do not have this "locking" mechanism. Keeping your arm in a fixed position is a constant effort from your body. You continuously supply energy to the muscles to maintain that position. Your arm *will* move if there is any variation anywhere in the muscle or the energy supply, and there definitely is. All this, and I haven't even mentioned the rest of the body, or breathing, or the bow.

About the visibility of lasers: I have tried several commercially-available laser sights, and in broad daylight, none are visible much past 20 yards. It especially depends on the color and material of the target. Bright, smooth, reflective things like white paper work best; dull, rough, dark-colored things work worst. So you might be able to see the laser dot on a sheet of paper at even 30 yards, but it will be tough to get it on that paper in the first place, because you can't see it on the ground around it. Inside or in low light conditions, like dusk or a cloudy day however, I haven't actually found the distance where you can no longer see a commercial laser. I've seen it at least 100 yards away easily. I'd guess the limit is somewhere around 300-400 yards. Which you could push even further with a telescopic sight.

To borrow from the rifle world, it all comes down to good "points of contact". For a typical bow you only have the forward hand and the cheek hand. A crossbow allows you to shoulder it for more solid points of contact. A typical maximum range "off hand" with a rifle is 200 yards, but for a pistol, maybe 50 yards because outstretched arms are less stable than a shoulder. If you crouch and put your elbow on your knee you get even stronger support. The prone and benchrest positions increase it even more. The most you can do is where you are in the benchrest or prone position and don't even shoulder the gun, because during recoil your shoulder moves more inconsistently than "free recoiling" the gun. I would love to see a shoulder stock on a non-crossbow. You still have to hold the full draw, but there is a firm shoulder support that completely avoids the string but allows you to take more accurate shots than a normal bow.

BTW, in case anyone is wondering why no one really uses laser sights is because its against the rules. Chapter 11 of the rule book state that you can't use any sort of eletronic or eletrical device equipment at any part of the bow. You also can't use any equipment that may distract other competitors (humans are no kittens alright, but a moving red point you don't control must be annoying as hell).

That’s easy, put a laser sight inside the arrow and use a transparent field point. The arrow might not hit the target, but the arrow is guaranteed to hit the laser dot.
@NUSensei2 жыл бұрын
Even that doesn't work. The arrow doesn't fly straight; it arcs. This would only be true in very short distances, but once you get past that, the arrow is no longer pointing at the target.

Can you built a tripod from the extenders? Why not go the extra-extra mile and build a makeshift ballista? Certainly increases accuracy.
@raver3777 жыл бұрын
well they can be more accurate then archers. since they are ancored to the ground they have one stable point and most of the time they only rotate on 2 axes. both are things that would make them more stable compared to bows/archers. but i think the biggest 2 factors would be 1. the type of ballista used 2. who build it. some ballistas have a higher fire/reload rate which most of the time sacrifices accuracy. and as i said who builds the ballista would probably be the biggest impact on the accuracy. if its made by an expert in their craft its going to be pretty accurate. if im taking the last 2 points out of consideration id say a ballista would potentialy be more accurate then any archer simply for the facts that they are grounded and not free floating and they rotate on 2 axes at most

When target shooting handguns I was taught to break off and take fresh aim if I didn’t get the shot out within three seconds, five seconds tops. Made perfect sense to me...if I held it for longer, I was always WAY off the mark. I do the same with my camera. Yes, there are optical stabilizers and all that, but those can only do so much. Unless you use a tripod or a crazy expensive wearable stabilizer rig, you will have a certain degree of camera shake both at long focal lengths and if you hold a camera for an extended period of time. That’s a fact. Some things can be compensated for, but there are limits. Besides, depending on the country you are in, any sights that illuminate or mark a target (such as a laser) are illegal to possess outside the military or law enforcement. If you are caught with that, people will want to have a conversation with you, and it will take place in a location you don’t want to be in. So even IF laser sighted bows were the best invention since sliced bread and worked phantastically well, they‘d still be illegal in some countries.

@NUSensei one of the sights I own for my compound bow has a gun rail attachment. It allows for any gun sights which use that particular gun rail (picatinny i think it's called) to be used on the bow. For fun I put a laser sight, works only for a single distance and the adjustments which work fine for other sights (like paralex scopes and red dot sights) do not work well with the laser sight. The sight is called "hha optimizer lite plus scope mount"

I have a laser sight (pointer) on my recurve hunting bow. If you shoot a recurve you know that, unlike a compound bow, speed is critical. The longer you hold a recurve bow drawn the shakier you get. Because I'm not looking through a sight or scope, I find that the laser helps me get the shaft on target quicker.

Hi I knew someone who had a laser sight and got to have a go on it on an indoor range at 18m. I experienced all the things you mentioned with regards to stabilization and the dot moving everywhere. It was super distracting and made shooting much harder. What you don't realise until you try it in a busy club, is how annoying it is for everyone else on the range! Everyone's eyes are drawn to this crazy dot flying around my target. It pretty much stopped everyone else from shooting and I had to wait till everyone else had finished shooting each end. Totally impractical but it was really fun to have a go with.

This is certainly true. Games make you think that a laser is the holy grail of accuracy, but anyone who has fired ANY laser-assisted gun or simply just held a laser pointer will know that the rate of deviation can be great even at short distances. At greater distances, that little jerk in movement can easily deviate your aim anywhere from 10cm to a few metres out.

Laser sights do work on crossbows. A vertical bow is like a hand gun. A crossbow is like a rifle. I do use a red dot on my Oneida 'leverage' (mechanically assisted recurve) bow which is a huge advantage over a traditional sight. The down side is it is fixed for a single distance.

I'm not an archer by any means but it seems to me that if anything a laser sight might help give you an idea if your form is off but really wouldn't give you any idea of where the arrow will actually land. Until of course you've developed good form at which point you probably don't need the sight anymore and it would probably hurt your accuracy at that point by trying to rely on it.
@timogul7 жыл бұрын
Huh. It sounds like you *could* build a useful laser sight for a bow, it would just need to be fairly complex. To make a laser sight that would be useful on a bow, you'd apparently need three things: 1. Basic stabilization. Camera's have this, a free-floating element that reduces shake. This would keep the laser fairly stable even if the bow was shaking a bit. For a quality archer, this _should_ result in a stable laser dot. 2. Automatic range-finding and pitch control. This would be a complex motor-driven and computer controlled element, but basically it could combine a laser range finder with a small pivot motor to angle the laser pointer relative to distance. Instead of being fixed at 90 degrees to the bow, it would tilt slightly downward the further out the target is, means that if you were shooting at a very distant target and bullseye'd the laser, then the sight would be tilted slightly downwards relative to the bow, causing the bow to be tilted upward to compensate, and the arrow to drop onto the target. 3. There are two lights. Use two lasers, one above the other, so that you can tell whether there are angle issues. If the lasers aren't perfectly vertical, then you're at an angle. Now obviously you'd need to be able to see these lasers, so they'd need to be very bright or you'd be using special optics, and they wouldn't be perfect in all conditions, but I think a tool like that could greatly improve accuracy for mid-skill archers.
@NUSensei7 жыл бұрын
#2 is really where the problem lies. Since the archer has to point the bow upwards to arc the arrow onto the target, you need a way to configure the sight to be on target.
@timogul7 жыл бұрын
Right, but that's what I mean about a range finder and a computerized rotational motor. Like I'm not sure the actual angles needed, but let's just say that at a range of 60m you'd need to pitch the bow upward by 14 degrees to hit the target. the laser rangefinder would know that the target it was pointed at was 60m away, it would know that you needed to be at 14 degrees off level, so it would pitch the laser downward to -14 degrees, so that if you point the laser at the target, then the bow would be pointed upward 14 degrees. If you then shifted the bow to point at a target 40m away, it would quickly re-adjust to 8 degrees. There would be a slight lag, but I bet they could get it under half a second. I imagine you'd have to manually dial in settings for things like draw weight, each archer would need to calibrate the bow to where they'd want it to be, but if they did, it should provide an accurate guide, I think.

@mortenjacobsen56737 жыл бұрын
the rules say no electronics . a red dot would be the same as a pin or fiberoptic or like a compound scope
@ber2chee7 жыл бұрын
The downsides seem to be a preference with hunting situations, like rain on the lens or a bow falling from a 20-foot tree stand and breaking the lens. I personally have not had any real-world issues with inclement weather and I feel any sight would be negatively affected by a fall from a Stand. The upside is I am able to receive feedback of torque and hold at the point of aim due to the fact that the dot and aiming triangle need to align upon release. I am able to hold a 1 and a half inch group at 20 yards and a 2 and a half inch group at 30 yards with a hunting set configuration. I personally will not harvest a deer any further than the 30-yard distance.

one could in theory use an inclinable laser in order to adjust the angle according to the shooting distance or maybe even two those lasers from powertools that use refraction to reate a "laser-line" in order to create a cross shape, but it would still only be an indicator where your bow is pointing and thus equivalent to an ironsight that can only be seen in the dark...

First of all, thank you NuSensei for this great channel. I appreciate your work very much. Maybe I've got a silly question to you, because I have just started to learn Hiragana and Kanji. My question is, if I understand the Katakana word ヌ"nu" right as "death" (Nu) , I would assume that "Nu - senei" means "Teacher of death/of killing" (> The one who teaches to kill ("minus/without me"/I'm below or under earth) = "death" > « die »as a Englisch verb, which has a relation to the verb "kill" ("to terminate before the official life expectancy"). At least, this seems to me to be a good "pony". I also thought that the character " メ " looks like a cross, or like an "x" on a map, which symbolizes, that "there" is something (treasure^^). And if we speak about the point we say the "treasure" is "here" or "there"{(t)here}^^. But look at a map in a train station, bus station or on a fair to day. The spot where you are, is market with a point, dot or an "x" (ex) or cross. Also think about the verb "to be" in Latin is "EXISTERE"(Lat. inf.) > "(EX)-ISTERE" > "(to) be here" (>exist
@NUSensei7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what your question is. It appears that you've misunderstood the characters. ヌ is katakana, not kanji. It is a character in the character set primarily used for loanwords, and does not carry a meaning or "word". The kanji for "death" is 死, pronounced "shi".
@patrichausammann7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, for this correction, I changed it to "Katakana" to correct my mistake. And thank you for the right form and pronounciation of the Kanji word 死 "shi"! I'm a bloody beginner in Japanes. It might be therefor, that I haven't known these characters before. ^^ But the idea of my interpretation wasn't too bad.^^ And when you said it is a loanword it makes also more sense to me. But if I'm honest, both character remind me to a man below surface ヌ Katakana and 死. Very very interesting, when I compare it with the chinese expression 死开 (Sǐ kāi), which was translated to "dead open". The character 死 was translated with dead, die, pass out, deadly, extremly, rigide inflexible, implacable or impassable. I think that really helps me further in understanding the language shift.
