The part with the wrist turn was a perfect explanation, why you don't cant the bow without canting your body, thank you so much!

This is really helpful. I have recently started playing around with different shooting and bow positions and because I shoot the English Longbow it can be a little challenging working things out by myself. Thankyou again and may I also be bold to say that I think you are a wonderful teacher. Have a lovely weekend.🏹

I have a natural cant. My bow arm was broken (in 3 pieces) before I even started archery. After surgery the alignment was such that my arm is lightly twisted inwards. Holding the bow straight is a little awkward for me so I hold it in the most comfortable position which for me is a lightly canted bow.

"One o clock position". That's what I was using without realizing it. Now I know it. Thanks.
@Thachsanh7 жыл бұрын
Another thing to consider is that if you tilt your bow without align your body and draw hand, you torque your bow limb. That would create all sort of problem from damaging your bow to inconsistent arrow flight...
@Thachsanh7 жыл бұрын
A couple things. First, with thumb draw techniques you only supposed to lean your index finger lightly on the arrow, not twisting your draw hand very hard. It should not torque the string much at all. Second, the area of contact between your thumb and the string is not very large, so, thumb draw will not torque the string as much. The torque are especially true with Mediterranean release. With 3 fingers on the string, the area of contact is much large therefore it creates a much worse torque. If you are not careful, you could un-string your bow with a large degree tilt.

thats true. thanks

I shoot with a sight and that requires a vertical bow for a repeatle, accurate shot. When I shoot instinctively, however, I cant the bow and tilt my head slightly, aligning my eye directly over the arrow,regardless of anchor, which may place your nock beyond the center line of your eye. Then , your only adjustment , is up and down. Consciously or not, you are looking right down the shaft of your arrow , aligning it with your target.
@Dan0e307 жыл бұрын
Another thing to consider when tilting a bow with an arrow shelf is that the arrow is now sitting about half an inch above the "tilting axis" of the bow. So unlike a "self bow" where the arrow sits on your hand as Mr. Hirmer showed and the arrow stays in one position when tilted, a bow with a shelf no longer stays in that position it actually moves towards the direction the bow is tilted in. To keep the arrow as the "axis" point, it turns into more of a swing rather then a tilt.This will change the trajectory of your arrow. It works well if you have a large "riser" and need to tilt the bow to see your target. It's just a matter of getting used to.

I don't think the sight is the reason why olympic archers don't cant their bows. If an olympic archer would always cant his bow, he would simply set his sight to compensate for that. I think, to repeatedly hit a target the size of a CD at 70m or even 90m, you need to have precisely the same form every time. I think the emphasis on a precisely repeatably form is much higher in olympic archery than in any other type of archery (that's what makes it dull to some ;). And it's just much easier for humans to measure a straight, upright angle, than to hit the same exact canting angle every time. If (repeatedly) hitting that target at 70m would be possible using another technique, someone would use it in olympic archery ;)
@ArminHirmer5 жыл бұрын
good point on the other side. they shoot centre shot bows, so thy can hold the bow fully upright. traditional nows are not centre shot bows, so one has to compensate for that

I was shooting yesterday and for the first time in a year and a half of shooting I thought maybe I'm canting the bow too much. I think I was at 1 o'clock before. But a little bit less than that gives me better results. I'd say at 12:34 is optimal for me 😁 It's interesting how many small details can improve your shooting.

Do you also apply the one arm hung over the saddle horn, Detroit saddle lean while riding a horse? When dismounted, do you wear your quiver around your knees? Lol that would complete the inner steppe-herder gangster aim, wouldn't it? Maybe wear a Mongol fur hat on backwards and pimp out the horse with underglow lanterns hanging from the harness??

I have subscribed and have been slowly going through your videos. All have helped me immensely with my shooting so I wanted to really thank you for that! Now that I am starting to practice with a thumb draw, and therefore the arrow on the other side of the bow, I wanted to ask if you still canter the bow at all with thumb draw? Or would that make the arrow go too low and, for me as a left handed shooter, to the left as well? Thanks again for the wonderful work you put in. It has absolutely made me a better archer. Cheers!

reminds me of when my mother wouldn't let me tilt the bow, it was a broken compound where the arrow rest was broken and wouldnt keep the arrow so i tilted it slightly and she did NOT like that. it wasnt my bow it was one of hers that she used for kids to shoot and such. it wasnt a fancy compound just like. an old genesis.

An Olympic archer can tilt the bow but why should he when its tuned and balanced to channel all energy forward , plungers ,rest, stabilizers ,form.,Besides in a comp you only have 80 cm of space waging the bow about is a no no and even on traditional classes they advocate that you hold the bow straight. why would you cant the bow ? yo twist the string so you have to lean forward witch then again collapses your frame and making back tension harder to perform due to less chest expansion. and why would instinctive shooter look at the target ?they dont aim... so they claim anyways Many archer dont use the set possession and or predraw and or dont draw with the back using angular motion so tension in the hand will cause the arrow to fall of the rest and they think canting the bow vill make a v to keep it in place,It does not matter if your shooting of the hand or use a shelf caus by pulling the arrow back just a few inches without pinching will press the arrow into the riser and keep it in place
