To be fair, it's really hard mixing a vocalist who is constantly switching between cupping and not cupping the mic. When he's not cupping the mic, the vocals seem to cut through much better. I know some consider this to be a technique, but then you'll still have to face the consequences, i.e. not being able to have a good mix.
