I love how warm and intimate Alexander's voice here, despite the kinda lost, bitter and regretful lyrics. It sounds like a song you'd hear while hanging out in an almost empty hotel lounge, wearing a velvet smoking jacket. His voice echoes through the corridors and you, in sharp irony, suddenly engulfed by a silent solitude.

TheTagger Nick’s basslines are bassist’s basslines. They’re note poor and on beat with the drums, giving it a rhythmic feel. This has a more guitarist’s bassline feel. Feels like an improvisational guitar solo, but on the bass. It’s note rich and not really tight with the drums. Kinda feels like all over the place, because it’s more melodic. I guess that’s the difference, Nick’s bassline is rhythmic, and Alex’s is melodic.

Anyways is so complex harmonically, he uses chord progressions that we normally find in jazz, like major 7 chords and diminished chords. For those who keep saying that this is not like the old Arctic Monkeys, etc, please stop comparing. Alex and the Monkeys have obviously changed and evolved their tastes, let's just enjoy whatever music they choose to give to the world.

I mean, yes there are seldom guitars in TBH+C. But neither did David Bowie, neither did Serge Gainsbourg, and they were loved by fans all over the world. What people fail to realise is that each album is unique on it's own (I've listened to the other albums and I still do, like SIAS and Humbug), but when you listen to TBH+C it's like Alex is telling us a story.
@fastndd6 жыл бұрын
Since when major 7 and diminished are 'so complex' 😂 Major 7 is used all the time, and so is the diminished chord. If you told me about chords who have 9th 11th 13th and so on, yea that would be 'so complex'. But I do get your point tho, it's more complicated than their old punk rock style or pop rock.

THE MEANING BEHIND "ANYWAYS" PART 2 (Please read until end, it's worth it): "Yeah I'm behind my movie camera, I've got my megaphone" - Alex is saying that his life is one whole movie, and that he's the one directing it. He's the one who has full control over how his "movie", or his life, goes. The megaphone can be seen as a form of authority, or even a threat to people who try to control his life . When directors have megaphones, their voices are louder than everybody's, therefore people have to listen to the director. In this case, the director is Alex. "You can call me Alexander, it's nice to meet you all" - Alex Turner is not Alexie, nor "Mark", or he's not the person with the bravura personality you see on stage. At the end of the day, Alex Turner is just a normal individual who happens to have a musical gift, but he's no different from the rest. Just call him Alexander, and nothing else. When he says "It's nice to meet you all", it means that he is re-introducing himself again, he wants to make it clear to people that he's Alexander and no one else. "Listening to the Shipping broadcast" - The Shipping Broadcast is a BBC network that broadcasts the weather. "Driving to the airport, me and the guys, metropolis ablaze in the rear view mirror" - In relation to "Listening to the Shipping broadcast", Alex and the rest of the Arctic Monkeys go again to another place ("driving to the airport") listening to the broadcast telling them how much successful they were in a certain festival. The "metropolis ablaze" is the city that they previously played in, they see it burn because for them, it's just another city with another fans, and they will move on and do the same thing to other cities. "Devising methods to both have and eat your cake" - Alex is directly talking to us. He says that him, Jamie, Matt, and Nick work their asses off in order to please us, or to find new ways to capture our attention. This comes from the expression, "You can't have your cake and eat it too", which means that people can't have more than what their already given. Alex says this in a very disgusted way, as if he was telling us that we are never happy with the music that they give us, only to like it in the end. "Mmm, just like the ones that Mother Nature used to bake" - I think Alex is talking about good bands and good music that used to existed, or music that Mother Nature provided. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Queen, Frank Sinatra, etc. were all talented bands and singers that made good music, and they came naturally; we never asked them to come. However, we always demand so much from the music industry that good music no longer comes naturally anymore. "You look as if you know as if you know exactly what I'm gonna say" - Alex is talking directly to us again. Again, we the public always assume that we know who the Arctic Monkeys are, what style they play, what they should do. But time and time again, they proved us wrong : We dont know them. "Is just another race to Anyways" - "Anyways", for me, is an imaginary place where we feel the most comfortable. It allows us to forget the thing that we've said before as if it didn't mean anything. But that's the thing, we almost always never put meaning into every sentence, because it doesn't matter anyways.

THE MEANING BEHIND "ANYWAYS" (Please read until the end) "Just another microcosm somewhere in the ether" - Alex is saying that despite his fame, he's just one of the many artists that are part of something bigger (the ether), which might be the music industry. "Putting a world to right with Bing Crosby eyes" - Bing Crosby is an American singer who had a very intimate style of singing, like Frank Sinatra. This means that Alex has adapted this style of singing now and is singing to the world. "Oversharing and its bitter aftertaste, exactly the wrong time in exactly the wrong place" - I personally feel that Alex is sharing his woes of being a star. The word "oversharing" is a reference to social media ("sharing"), and Alex feels that social media catches him off guard, hence the "exactly the wrong time in exactly the wrong place". "Save it for a rainy day, baby you go hard in the paint, it’s just another race to anyways" - This is a genius line right here. "Save it for a rainy day" is just another way of saying "save your apologies or excuses for another time, when it's urgent". "Baby you go hard in the paint" is an idiom that pertains to someone doing something aggressively in order to get something done, and "it's just another race to anyways" pertains to people wanting to pass on the other things quickly ("Anyways" is a word that we use to pass on to something else while brushing off the thing that we've said before, as if it wasn't important) "Philanthropic toga party, what a place for both the opposite sides of my double life to collide" - Alex is talking about huge parties or award shows in general, he puts in "philanthropic" because philanthropy is the love of humanity. This has two meanings to it : He either goes to these parties just to reluctantly please people, or he genuinely likes these parties. Either ways, the both sides of his life - his calm, shy personality and the bravado personality he puts on stage collide in these parties. Note, he says "collide", meaning they dont work well together and he finds that annoying. "Sharing secrets I was taking to the grave" - This means that Alex's fame has led him to sharing things about his life whether willingly or unwillingly. This means that secrets that aren't meant to be known or secrets that are private are being shared by everyone. "Nosebleeds from epiphanies I took full in the face" - An epiphany is a sudden realization. These sudden realizations are so profound and so hard-hitting that Alex has nosebleeds from it. These epiphanies can pertain to his rise to fame. "Oh, come all by the fire, babe, let's all participate, in just another race to Anyways" - Alex at this point is calling everyone to listen to his secrets, since there's no point in hiding them. "In just another race to Anyways" means that it doesn't matter, no matter how bad the secret, because it's just another thing to forget and to move on. "Oh, how's your Mum and Dad been doing with the generation gap" - Alex tries to relate to the older generation, hence referring to our parents. Alex in his current situation feels quite awkward and out of place (not only because of his fame but also his age, Alex is 33 years old now), and he decides to talk about our "Mum and Dad" because they, too, may feel awkward because of the Generation Gap. He might be talking about the type of music or even the culture that our parents were exposed to, and it may have been a good time back then, even better than now.

Beautiful song. Based on the lyrics, I feel Alex is singing about comment wars that happen on social media, how one is sensitive of its opinions and that of others, how people, having a "Michael Jackson with popcorn" moments, enjoy witnessing this war just after introducing themselves "Hi all !", how people manage to find other like minded ones and ridicule others, and how people get a dopamine hit by joining in on others conversations, as if they knew abt it all along.
