This my experience with metal fatigue. If you push an internally stock 25, year old nissan 4 cylinder with 150,000 miles, to around 500 hp. After ten years or about 60,000 miles of such abuse, rod number three will poke his head out, for some fresh air and smoke break. Metal fatigue limit exceeded.

I bought a 90 something Tercel that blew steam, changed head gasket, discovered wrong head on car but still ran, metal fatigue actually occurred in some of the coolant ports, which didn't match up exactly correctly and eroded their odd parts off and then I could never match the actual properish oem-y parts to either part ever again...I guess I ran the coolant flush for a few thousand miles instead of actual coolant. Whatever. Car still ran when I abandoned it; likely possessed and I never understood how to get it where its spirit could get loose so died with the car, like a second time. /digression Advice: probably don't. Knowledge tidbit for the day: "Fatigue Limit" is the opposite of what most people presume. It's not the point where something starts to break. It's there point where where the material can be flexed an infinite amount of times and *never* break. For example, aluminum and copper don't even have a fatigue limit, it doesn't apply, they always gets weaker and closer to breaking when you bend them, any amount. Steel and titanium however, as long as you don't bend them too much, never fatigue, their fatigue is limited, hence Fatigue Limit. Look it up, neat stuff.

A word on fatigue. Speaking strictly for steel the rule of thumb that the old timers told me when I was but a pup is to keep the stress less than half the yield. Even better is yield/3. Also, the magical number for steel is 1 million. Steel by nature has a fatigue limit where once you reach 1 mil cycles if it hasn't broke by then most likely it won't. Aluminum (diet steel) on the other hand behaves differently. No matter how small the load, aluminum will fail under fatigue eventually. Might just take a long time, but the day will come where what was 1 will become 2. Think of that next time you're in an aluminum tube hurtling through the air at 500+ mph.
@ThePeachJames4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe a lot of what we know about the aluminum tube failure has to do with square die punched holes in said aluminum people tube... (AKA the Comet 1's). There is a reason why airplanes are limited in total cycles. There is a comment down below this one about "No Highway", Nevil Shute Norway's story which predates the Comet. (Colour me a sucker for Slide Rule though, and Trustee from the Toolroom, which AvE resembles in some ways !)
