Thanks for continuing to cover physical media topics. People have no clue what they are missing out on not watching 4k UHD Discs. Its unfortunate that the big corporations swindled their way to making people feel that the convenience of streaming is superior to getting top quality. Then they give you options that benefit them as far as choices and the general public just accepts this. Then every year they make them pay for a movie like Home Alone. Smh

When I said in eARC I can loose sound, it literally disappears, no audio at all. When I said HDMI, I probably should have said just basic ARC mode, in this mode no issues at all but no Atmos. I'll try your suggestions and report back. Thank you again for taking the time to answer my question! Love the show.

I’m a Dolby Vision certified colorist. I can tell you that most movies are not graded much brighter than what an SDR version is expected to look like on a consumer device. SDR is a relative standard that gets as bright as your screen is set to. HDR is theoretically an absolute standard that should have the exact same brightness on any screen (emphasis on theoretically). So it’s usually a choice to grade it a bit brighter than the SDR 100nit standard otherwise it would look too dark for most viewing conditions, but not by much. Also the way our vision works means there’s very little to be gained from brighter nit levels. So much so that half of the data of HDR sits in the first 100ish nits and you get progressively less data for brighter levels. Which means that the extra brightness is intended for low detail pixels such as specular highlights. Your middle gray and most of the information should not be too high up in order to get the best chunk of the signal.

For the folks with the audio drop out issues... I have a sony TV. it was great everywhere, but when streaming from the internet, I'd get some random audio drop outs. Turns out it's how the TV caches and adjusts the audio based on the wifi signal changes. so any movement in the house or breathing wrong that would cause a fluctuation the wifi signal, even if it doesn't effect the internet speed, would cause the TV to adjust the audio and cause a quick drop out. I installed a $20 wireless media bridge and connected my TVs ethernet port to the bridge. Haven't had an audio dropout in months. With troubleshooting, sometimes you have to get creative, but never stop eliminating things. No matter how sure you are about something, test it anyways. At some point, you will find the cause of your issue. This goes for anything you're troubleshooting.

Sonos sound bars have an issue where the volume drops to zero. I’ve generally seen that happen after power failures or firmware updates. I have to up the volume again to address it temporarily, but if I turn the TV off and back on again, the volume is back at zero. Power cycling again will often fix it. There is also a kluge that worked with the old Sonos app where you change a bunch of audio and video configurations and then set them back. When it happened again after the new Sonos app, I found the kluge no longer worked, so I had to power cycle to fix it.

Netflix in particular are going to want the HDR stream to look quite different to the regular HD stream because they’re charging extra for it. A very different motivation to that of a director! 13:19

You are right about movies and HDR. I read an article years ago talking about HDR and movies. The article said the same thing you are saying. Why would a director blow out a light source or a fire when it's not needed for the scene? Sometimes a scene needs certain lighting or color to set a tone and that brightness might just need 150 nits not 700 nits for no reason.

With regards to the disc skipping, it might be the off gassing that happens. Look at the inside of the disc case. If it's cloudy looking, you need to wipe the case & the disc with microfiber cloths. Use separate cloth for the discs. I d recommend doing this every time you get a new bluray before playing them.

I do a bit of HDR mastering work and every single director is looking at how the image tells the story of their movie. 100% of the goal is tell the story. The consideration of the TV is only taken in to account to make sure that it can accurately convey the decisions made to tell the story. The technology exists for creatives to communicate a story. Just because more and brighter colors can be shown doesn't mean that it suits the story to use them. You can always turn up the brightness and increase the saturation on your own TV as a matter of personal preference. However doing that detracts from the careful visual work the director of photography and colorist put into the visual story telling.

@@superstew79 It's common. Many people don't think about why movies or shows look a way. It's consumption vs creation. When you are watching you want the imagery to bend to your personal preferences. That's fine but you may miss something that was being explained by deliberate color choices.
@superstew79
@superstew79 2 ай бұрын
@@josephslomka8161 well this KZbinr seems to think everything one and everything should look like a cartoon, hell even go as far as juicing up colours to make them appear when they really shouldn’t. He thinks HDR is a huge scam, I personally think it’s the biggest game changer to films in years. Having that wider colour gamut really allows for more details to be painted, it’s like asking a artist to paint you with 10 colours vs 1000 colours

I have a question - when HDR increases brightness does it generally lower the brightness of other parts of the screen or does it spotlight the brightness in a smaller area?
@josephslomka8161
@josephslomka8161 2 ай бұрын
@@techsamurai11 Depends on the display technology and the overall brightness level. The brighter the highest peak can only be on a small screen area with OLED. There is a limit to the total full screen brightness available. A 1200 nit oled may only be able to hold that brightness for 5% of the screen. A full screen white can be limited to 200-300 nits

It's more like elevating treble and bass and reducing midrange. It's a strange effect when A/B'ed to SDR. It's also why TVs cannot A/B SDR and HDR. It's a bit shocking. You could only do it on Chrome and IE with Netflix because of the bug in Netflix on Chrome lowering resolution to 720p 1mbps while IE Chromium played DV. Then you need a super monitor or TV to handle SDR and HDR (OLEDs cannot handle SDR). I'm probably one of a handful of people along with the best engineers that have A/B'ed SDR and HDR in a blind test.

HDR is not just about brightness and nits. It's also about the extra *shades* of colors made possible by 10-bit color of HDR (whereas SDR has only 8 bits). Both bright and dark colors benefit from the extra bit depth. In other words, HDR benefits EVERY type of picture. The fact that many 4k Blu-rays don't use it is likely due to storage space, since that extra 2 bits per pixel would increase the video file size majorly, to the point that more compression would be needed, which nobody would want.

A good high level trouble shooting starting point. As for your explanation of lower HDR highlights on Blueray... seems well explained and parallels exactly how your home theatre sound should be sized... My biggest system (9.2.6) is 15 channels at 350W RMS and 2x SVS SB16 Ultras... (and all of the speakers can handle more than my RMS power potential)... I am certainly NEVER going to be playing it at anything close to max volume, and rarely even run higher than -35Db... there's zero chance of distortion or clipping with loads of headroom... I figure max nits are similar on the eyes and screen as max volume is on the ears and speakers...

Disc freezing issues- I had similar experience, fixed problem. Player: Sony UBP-X800M2, Tv: Sony XR-65A95K, AV Receiver: Sony STR-DH550. The Blu Ray player and AV receiver HDMI ports are made with a soft flexible metal that will easily bend thereby loosening the fit between HDMI cable and the port itself. As a result, the connection was not firm and caused intermittent playback problems. I carefully bent the internal connection tabs within the ports to ensure a tight connection. Never had a problem since. If your player has WiFi capabilities try going wireless to rule out connectivity issues to see if problem resolves.

I have the Sony X900H and that tv can only get about 800 nits max in brightness. But most content doesn't even come close to that much brightness so the tv tone maps 95% of everything just fine. Then there is Dolby Vision HDR that literally calculates your tvs capabilities and does tone mapping for the HDR content for the tv.

Lemme input some tips here with the first 2 problems: * Disk skipping: i learnt that some blu-ray disks come in with some kind of lubricant/manufacturing byproduct on the cases that leech into the disks that causes the skipping. It's the oily substance you can see on both the case and the underside of the disks. Cleaning both with a dry microfiber towel might help. * Audio dropouts: i didn't know this was a multiple generation/model problem because i got a Samsung Q90R home and have the same problem that i've solved for myself. The TV tries to handle or do something with the high bitrate audio tracks (DTS-HD MA/DTS:X and Atmos/TrueHD) that and inserts random sub-one-second dropout. That's why you solve it partially when you change to a audio mode where your home theatre or soundbad doesn't play those audio formats. The solution is easy: don't pass your audio thru the TV to avoid the dropout. Just let your soundbar or home theatre handle it. Connect the Bluray player to your soundbad then the soundbar to the eARC port. If you have a Xbox Series X or PS5 that uses Dolby Atmos while playing, you'll encounter the same problem and you can solve it in the same way: connect your console to the soundbar and the soundbar to the eARC port on your TV. ------------------------ I hope this helps some of you with these problems.

To the guy with the disc freezing issues - I think it's probably an HDMI "handshake" issue with your TV. I have found occasionally blu-ray discs will have intermittent audio dropouts, and for awhile I blamed the discs,, or my blu-ray player, or my pre/pro, before it dawned on me that it felt like an HDMI handshake symptom. So I paused the disc, turned my TV off waited 10 seconds, then back on again, and the problem was gone. My HDMI cables are up to date, and in fact my TV is only a few years old, so that was the only possible culprit. Now when it happens I go straight to the TV. Hope that helps.

I wholly support the question about HDR on 4K discs. I too have been underwhelmed by the HDR prestentation on many discs. The resolution was higher and the colors gamut larger, yes, but the dynamic range often did not seem to differ that much from regular SDR 1080p Bluray. Now, I have an older OLED, a LG E6 from 2016 that was never the brightest screen to begin with, but recently I ran a test where I switched of the HDR coming from my device, feeding the tv 2160p SDR instead. I saw no truly noticable difference. The thing is however, I _do_ clearly see the difference on Dolby Vision titles streaming on Netflix or Disney+. So I guess it really is a case of UHD Bluray discs underutilizing the format. We finally have something that can range up to a 1000 nits at least and now we're not using it. It's the opposite of the loudness wars on CD's where the far larger dynamic range CD's have compared to vinyl wasnt utilized either by having everything close to 0dBFS. Or is this just another case were film distributors want us to double dip AGAIN by releasing 'remastered HDR' or whatever they'll call it that _does_ use up to a 1000 nits. then 4000 nits, then 10,000 nits?

For the Blu-ray player, if it isn’t the player or the TV or the sound bar that are the problem, maybe it might be the power. if the power isn’t clean or if it is a bit spotty, maybe that is causing the disc to stop spinning or freezing. For my house there is one outlet that is always spotty and whenever I plug-in electronics into that outlet they don’t work that well, but they work fine in other outlets. Just thought it might help.

I remember reading a white paper early on that stated 100nit SDR content could be mapped to 200nit HDR with no loss in quality. Considering I calibrated my LG CX's ISF Dark to a perfect Rec709 reference response with a colorimeter, I can easily say watching SDR Bluray is just as enjoyable as UHD Bluray. When it comes to actual films, I think you're right about preserving the look of the film... as long as the expanded dynamic range matches the dynamic range of the film stock or digital cinema camera, that's going to be enough. The thing I've been wondering myself recently is how often film color would naturally exist outside of the Rec709 colorspace and can DCI-P3 or Rec2020 most efficiently allow for the full color response without clamping. My main gripe is that currently, we're seeing 144Hz panels get into consumer televisions and that a perfect opportunity to accurately simulate a triple strobe film projector and eliminate telecine conversions forever. Display each frame of 24p 3x with 3 black frames in between, and you get 24x6=144 just like a real film projector. I'm more interested in high brightness panels being able to maintain the correct APL with a 50% BFI ratio like I described than reach for the stars with blinding specular highlights. I was disappointed that LG wasn't touting such a feature in the G4, it should have been priority one! Currently, the only way to even experiment with this would be a SDR Bluray fed into a RetroTink4K that could generate the black frames and triple buffered image and then send the resulting 144Hz signal to the LG amd then calibrate ISF Bright to 100nits with the BFI baked in. I'm hoping someone can get through to LG at the right level and get them to understand that a feature like that is ideal.

The mapping between film color and digital display is interesting. Film is subtractive and produces it's most saturated colors at it's darkest as well. Digital produces it's most saturation at the brightest colors. Rec2020 gamut is good for film color reproduction because the extreme saturation available produces additional saturation at the lowest level of brightness. It really helps get some of the color back in shadows that can go all pale and BLAH on other digital masters

Never rule out hdmi cables just because theyre good or expensive. Ive done that before and turns out my $100 3 ft cable had crapped out after 2 years. I found out by buying a $5 cable and the issue was solved. So since its a cutting out problem, just try other cables, its a cheap easy way to rule that out too. Remember, even $20million mclaren f1's still need maintenance and parts replaced. Cost/quality doesnt always matter, things just randomly fail and wear out.

Humble yourself. That's funny. Anyways, don't listen to the haters. Just know that when you get haters, you're doing your job very well.. Caleb, we as real supporters are here to do exactly that support you. Okay, moving on the other reason why and with me being a physical media collector. I will share this with you. Most studios and directors don't take full advantage of 4K Blu-ray discs, because we as reviewers myself included. Hate it when a scene gets blown out because it just takes away from the actual experience. There has to be a humble balance for a picture in the movie to look the way the Creator intended it to look and I for one am happy that they do not take full advantage of it, here's why, because I can't stand when Netflix does their series, movies, etc blowing out a particular scene for WOW people while I myself can't even make out any details.. That right there as a reviewer, will lose points for doing that. And I might just not give it a good review picture wise. .keep pushing forward guys!

The problem with the "4 different players" question is that we don't know what 4 players were tried. Sony 4K players are notorious for skipping/freezing issues on 4K discs. I know because I myself have an X700 and X800 player that freeze on triple layer discs (which were each pristine). Only switching to the Panasonic UB820 fixed the problem.

I love Pink Floyd and I tried playing some blu ray live concerts on my 4k player. And the audio wouldn't sync properly....about half a second off- words weren't matching the mouth....really annoying. I thought it was the disc but then pulled out my old blu ray player i saved. The disc worked properly and perfectly off it. That's how I trouble shoot....using other players or tvs, just as you suggested

There are a few 4ks out there. Criterion for example. That don't have hdr. I don't freak out honestly. Umbrellas super Mario bros (1993 film) looks better in 4k even without hdr compared to the blu ray. I think it should be creator decided when possible of how its implemented. I do think companies like arrow and uk companies like 88 films and eureka! Do a great job. Vinegar syndrome also does a great job and they only work with hdr10. I hear some studios can do some freakish hdr jobs on movies. So it is a case by case. Something like john wick 4 is impressive in hdr probably there is always something going on with lighting and what not inneach scene.

The purpose of HDR is not to be super bright. The purpose of HDR is to be super bright on the occasion that you need it to be. But it is true that a lot of movies still underutilize the format, presumably because as you said they want to be consistent with other releases and the colorists/directors don't feel that they need a large range of brightness to properly present the film. In fact, I think Roger Deakins himself said he doesn't like grading for HDR specifically because of how bright it gets.

I think I figured out something that's been bugging me. I just got the LG C3 77" OLED. I have the Pixel Brightness and the Contrast set to 100 and the Black Level to 53 - 57, depending if the video is dark or just not bright. I'm seeing that 100 in Standard is not the same as 100 in HDR. It's a great picture but where is the high nits this thing is supposed to show? Then what's the advantage to get an even brighter newer TV?

I don't understand the obsession with brightness in hdr? A too brightness destroys the image of a film in my opinion, especially if you watch it in a dark room.

HDMI handshake problems at a guess. Had issue with one TV that never got solved (had to return) the audio kept randomly dropping. Pull the plug, switch back on the TV once again finds the HDMI, for a while - it's not as great a system as it's made out to be.

Haters gonna hate, I guess...At the end of the day, content costs money to produce--quality content doubly so, and memberships are a great way for those who are able and want to contribute to do so, It's just as you said, the rest of us lose nothing and, hey, if memberships really take off, maybe we actually gain as DT has more money to spend making the videos we love to watch. As for HDR in Blu-Ray movies, it's worth remembering that projection can't do HDR except maybe in the highest end commercial settings. Although even then, I think that HDR10 on my Samsung S95B (thanks for that recommendation a couple of years ago, btw) blows even my local state of the art Dolby theater out of the water. Most theaters are stuck with SDR for at least the foreseeable future and I'm betting studios just don't see the value proposition in grading for HDR--especially because they still have to grade for SDR anyway to maintain backward compatibility for all those guys watching movies on bedsheets tacked to the wall.

There is one basic fact not mentioned in this video. Even the AMC Dolby Cinema with laser projection doesn’t have TV like dynamic range, in either end, brights or blacks. However the Dolby Cinema has the most outstanding Dolby Atmos you will hear anywhere including speakers with ribbon tweeters located everywhere including the ceiling.
