3:48 In the United States, while it's sold as "owning" your digital downloads for games and movies, almost none of the available options actually allow you to own the game or movie. Nearly all of them are selling a revokable license and will tell you that you own it, but can actually take it away if they choose to. To replace physical media not only do we need to have a full quality download option, but we also need stronger consumer protection rights to prevent content providers from revoking your licenses. As a good reference, you can see Sony's controversies in August of 2022 and between September 2023 to December 2023. While Sony walked back the decision to pull the content due to the public backlash, it's not that they can't.

There are films...and TV shows...and documentaries...that are important enough to me that I want to own them at least on DVD...if not Bluray. Some films are so important that I want to own them on 4K disc. I have the same attitude with music. If it's important enough to me to own I want it on a CD...or an SACD...or a DVD-Audio disc.

The sad thing, people not willing to pay have the option to actually own 4k media. The big studios are setting themselves up for failure by trying to keep it locked down.

The TCL interview was very interesting. I liked the “message” about vertical integration giving them the ability to pass on the savings to the consumer, and that they are therefore able to control their quality as well. I think a big barrier to TCL (as well as Hisense) adoption has been belief in their quality and longevity. Sure, they have the specs and performance, but will they last? Will the power supplies, electronic boards, physical ports, etc last as long as premium brands? Or are their components less robust than those of the premium brands. With a vertical manufacturing model they should be able to produce robust products at a good cost, and it’s not like the premium brands aren’t trying to reduce their costs more than ever and people have plenty of problems with those TVs not lasting as well, so…why can’t TC offer a nice long warranty to to instill belief of quality and longevity with the consumers? If they truly believe in their ability to control quality with their vertical model then they should be able to offer a longer warranty without worrying about too many warranty claims. 10-15 years ago I wouldn’t have even considered a Hyundai or Kia regardless of how nice their SUVs are, but when they started offering those long warranties it definitely boosted consumer confidence in their products and they had a big uptake in market share. Maybe TCL should do the same. (And MAINTAIN that quality, whereas Hyundai/Kia have had some rough patches recently.)

This is why I'm a HUGE fan of TCL!! I bought a 50" Series 4 Roku TV (4k LED LCD) close to when TCL first came to market, to replace a dead 1080p LCD, before all the mini/QD-mini tech and was highly impressed with it. I KNEW they were going to be the company to stick with and my next tv will definitely be a QD-LED. I've looked at 65" offerings from LG, Samsung and Sony and although I really like the Sony X90L and Bravia 7/8 I can't help but keep coming back to TCL!!! The low price (by $500-$1000 depending on model) vs size can't be beat by anyone.

I've ripped my entire DVD/Bluray/4K library using MakeMKV and store it on a Synology NAS, played back with a Zidoo Z3000. I've included all the special features (which takes a lot of extra time-but worth it). This is a fantastic way to create your own digital library, although it took me about a year and a half-and ongoing with new purchases! But, I'm able to watch any movie by simply clicking my remote. So convenient. And not to mention I can rip a relative's movies that I don't own and add it to my library. This sure beats a kaleidoscope player for costs. The disadvantage is you or someone you know has to have the disc - which is not a bad thing. Thanks for you channel and really enjoy your content. I got a 75 inch TCL C935 QD-Mini LED tv for €899. I know it's the 2022 flagship but that price is unbeatable. The picture quality, clarity, colours and black levels are astonishing. I can't believed I only paid €899 for such picture quality. 1920 local dimming zones. The only gripe I have is the audio quality. It's decent but you'd definitely want to invest in a soundbar. Also the menus are a little laggy sometimes but I don't mind. You got Hisense U7N (which is supposed to be the midrange budget version of U8N) at 75 inch which has a worse panel (ADS Pro) and less than half of local dimming zones for €300 more!! Happy with my purchase. TCL is next level.

I just got the TCL 98" QM7 QD-MiniLED on that crazy Black Friday deal and it replaced (moved upstairs) an LG 77" C3 OLED in our living room. I knew the picture quality was going to be a drop from the OLED, but honestly, it wasn't nearly as much as I expected. Like 10/10 to 8/10. Pretty much only I can tell there's any difference in picture quality and even then, I don't really care because it comes with 21" diagonal of additional screen real estate which can't be replicated by OLED unless you spend $18k+. Plus we still have the OLED upstairs so now we have the best of both worlds. I think TCL has the correct strategy here. Offer bigger TVs for cheaper, but keep the picture quality good enough that the difference in quality doesn't matter.

Hey hey, my current 4-5 year old tv is a 6-series TCL 55 inch R625, still going strong, totally great purchase as it was my first ever big screen tv and it has Dolby Vision, 4k, QLED. I simply sit 5 feet away from my 55 inch for immersion when watching a movie, particularly if a 4k title. That's right at the sweet spot for ideal viewing distance for viewing 4k content. When I get a new tv relatively soon I'll get a 65 or 75 and I'll move seating a couple feet back for better room layout. I easily get cinema experience for my 55" with this seating distance, just as well as I would with a larger screen where I would have to sit a bit farther back for optimum distance/viewing angle.

@@TheFittedRockStar tldr: 3 HDMI 2.1 (70''-96'') sync box with 96led/m RGBW and additional led strip (purchased separately). My description will be long, but I will try to give you my experience. The road to achieving the goal was long and bumpy, but nevertheless I think it was worth it and the end result rewarded the ordeal ;-) As for ambilight, there are 2 technologies to choose from: 1. with an external camera (e.g. govee) 2. HDMI syncbox (e.g. Govee, Lytmi, Nanoleaf, Fancyleds) The plus side of the external camera is that it works with everything (what is displayed on the screen), including apps built into the TV. The downside is a slight delay relative to the image source, the color can be affected by external light sources (such as when the sun falls on the tv screen) The plus side of Synboxes is low latency (the response is instantaneous) and perfect accuracy. The downside is that it only works when the image source passes through the syncbox (apps built into the TV will not work). In my case, the picture source is Chromecast 4.0 and a gaming PC (an Xbox or Playstation console will also work), I don't use the TV's built-in app, so I chose syncbox. My goal was full support for 4k@120Hz with HDR, Dolby Atmos etc. First I bought a syncbox hdmi 2.1 for 95-120' from aliexpress (with one hdmi input) and a switch hdmi 2.1 from UGREEN (because I use 2 video sources - PC/Chromecast). The hdmi switch from UGREEN did not work (the maximum I was able to achieve was 4k@60Hz with 8bpc and YCBCR 4.2.2) - I wanted 4k@120Hz 10bpc sRGB/YCBCR 4.4.4 support. The Syncbox itself (without the switch plugged in) also only worked at 4k@60Hz, but that was not the main problem. Unfortunately, the RGB led strips do not produce white color (contrary to what you might think, movies are full of scenes with white color, websites, games, etc), with RGB the white color is represented by light blue. This annoyed me terribly, so I returned both. I had to choose a branded solution, e.g. Govee, Lytmi, Nanoleaf, Fancyleds, Philips Hue). This is where the problems begin: 1. it's hard to buy something for TVs 100 inches and above (most are for TVs 50-90 inches). 2. if you live in the US you should be able to buy something, I live in Europe and here no one sells syncbox for 100'' or more inches. I tried to buy on US ebay, amazon but they wouldn't ship to europe. 1. Philips HUE - I did not consider because of the ridiculous price. Problem with buying leds for 100'' (they sell leds for smaller TVs, and the backlight is only on the sides and top - no backlight on the bottom!) 2. Nanoleaf 4D - I didn't consider because it supports a maximum of 85 inches, they have 30led/m (too low accuracy in my opinion), and they don't state if the LED strip is RGB+W, so I assume it's RGB. In addition, it has a camera and I didn't want delays. 3. Govee T2 - camera not syncbox, 60l/m, RGB (so white is blue) - couldn't buy or ship to Europe. Currently for 98-100' not available on the manufacturer's website. 4. Govee 3 Lite - not a syncbox, 30l/m, RGB, max 85 inches. 5. Lytmi Fantasy 3 - HDMI 2.1 95-120'' - 72l/m but they don't write anywhere if it's RGB+W so I assume it's RGB. The 95-120'' size has been unavailable for purchase since August - I've read that the power port burns in this size so it's possible they've taken them out of production. 6. 3 HDMI 2.1 Fancy sync box 70-95'', 3 HDMI Input, 4k@144, VRR, ALLM, 96led/m RGB+W - size is not ideal but maybe 95'' is enough, the technical parameters alone on paper suited me. Bingo I thought! Unfortunately too fast ;-) Problems with Fancyleds: -Only the most expensive version (3hdmi 2.1) has 96l/m - other versions have only 48l/m. -doesn't work with PC! Or at least not as the technical specifications suggest! The maximum I was able to achieve on PC was 4k@60Hz with HDR support (10bpc, sRGB), 4k@120Hz without HDR support (8bpc maximum, YCBCR 4.2.2 - no sRGB, or YCBR 4.4.4), VRR (in my case nvidia g-sync) did not work -support does not respond to questions, I was assured that I would hear back from technical support but they never wrote back. - support on inquiry about the possibility to extend the led strip (you can buy a led strip separately) by soldering the missing 0.5m stated that it is not possible (but it is possible and it works!) -I tried to ask people on Reddit on the fancyleds subforum if and how they solved the problems with PC support, but the moderators deleted my post (moderators are from fancyleds, so they delete unfavorable posts or posts with problems - you do not have a picture of the whole problems that people with had with fancyleds products). I didn't give up and kept digging into the topic. I found some post on Reddit called Philips Hue hack (how to get hdmi 2.1 support on syncbox with hdmi 2.0 without buying a new version). The idea is to not send the signal from the source to the TV through the syncbox. The syncbox has to get a signal to work, but you can bypass it by using an HDMI splitter (so you split the signal from the source into 2 HDMI signals - one goes straight to the TV bypassing the syncbox and the other goes to the syncbox so the leds can work). HDMI splitters have only one signal input, so you still need to add an HDMI Switch. So the whole connection looks like this SOURCES->HDMI SWITCH->HDMI SPLITTER->SYNCBOX AND TV. Both the switch and the splitter must support HDMI 2.1. This way I was able to achieve 4k@120Hz with 10bpc sRGB/YCBCR 4.4.4, HDR, Dolby Atmos etc. What doesn't work: - VRR (nvidia g-sync) - Windows no longer recognizes the TV but the Splitter, so in the nvidia drivers the display is no longer compatible with g-sync (it is possible that this can be bypassed by using another splitter (I didn't have the strength to try anymore and I didn't care that much) - The remote from the TV does not work with chromecast (I have to use the remote from chromecast), there were days that the remote from the TV worked with chromecast (I do not know what it depends on), but more often it does not work than it works. Despite all these problems, and things that do not work, I do not regret the purchase, ambilight for 100'' TV incredibly affects the immersion and is worth all the sacrifice, the effect is amazing Splitter I use: “Avedio links HDMI Splitter 1 in 2 Out [with 4 Feet HDMI Cable] 4K 1x2 HDMI Splitter Duplicate/Mirror Screen Only (Not Extend), Copy 1 Source to 2 HDMI Displays at The Same Time”. My main gripe with the interviews is that they KILL the pacing of the YA'd format and feel out of place. They also come off more as glorified advertisement/pr for companies, and not so much actual "you asked"-like discussion/answers. All interviews should be their own video. Make a separate series JUST for interviews.

I completely agree. This isn't what I came to watch on a you asked video. We didn't ask for any of these and it is an ad for the company. Also, why make an ad for a company we should be outlawing? Great interview with Bruce from TCL. I like that they make their own components as opposed to having to get them from a third-party vendor. I also didn't know that their TVs use an H-VA panel, which I've never heard of until this video. Keep doing these interviews, Caleb!

@ 7:30 - Just got our 77" G4 4k to replace our 60" 1080 (3d.. pouring one out) viewed from 8' and I'm not only surprised that it isn't taking us the expected amount of time to adjust, it actually feels like 85" would have been ideal for the space and distance (not an option as it is OLED and the 83" was about $1,200 more for 5").

I'm going to disagree that production houses would make more by selling digital download versions of the discs. The discs let you sell cardboard at a premium. They load up these things with so much packaging bloat like stills and folded posters that they then turn around and add an extra $10-30 for as a "collector's edition." Can't do that with a download.

I like buying the 4k discs because you get the artwork as well including the blu ray discs for certain movies plus there are extra features like deleted scenes and even music videos like the 8 mile movie. With the physical copies of movies, there are no subscription fees once they are already paid for and works offline with no internet connection and offer superior visual and audio fidelity than there streaming counter parts. You are physically holding what you paid for. You pay once and not stuck paying for the content compared streaming where you constantly have to make monthly payments since it's not a one time thing and the content creators get paids in peanuts like spotify when it comes streaming compared to the physical versions of the content.
@Mike_Who9 күн бұрын
The question was more to do with the fact that blu ray IS dying and we are too few for companies to keep them as a viable product. That’s why there are few player options etc. So if it blu ray does have to go, there currently is no (legal) digital format with equal quality. And the illegal options are just ripped blu rays, so won’t be an option when blu ray goes. Basically are we going to end up in a world where streaming is the highest quality option

Brian Tech Therapy had Bruce on and now DT which is awesome. Thanks for making this happen Caleb. 65” LG E7 & C1 OLED owner here and I was tempted, still am, to grab and add a 98” QM851G to the living/theater room because 98” is just more wow than what I think an 83” G4 OLED or 85” Bravia 9 can deliver, but the next & upcoming QM952G gave me pre-buyers remorse with 14k+ dimming zones over the 5k+ in the current QM8. Here’s hoping it arrives early in the new year and that it performs like a masterclass in picture quality that truly rubs elbows with OLED & their contrast. So excited & anxious to see what’s fact from fiction.

If you're a gamer, be careful about going too big on the TV. In films and TV shows the director and cinetographers do a good job of keeping the action in the centre of the frame, or near it. You often have to focus in different areas all over the screen, so if your screen is too big it can be difficult to game effectively on it

Depends on the distance, not the screen size. The bigger the TV, the farther it should be.

Well done - I have the S95D which is a joy to watch. What advice can I give you from my experience? 1. I had to buy a wall-mount - did not come with the TV 2. I'm glad I spent the time/cost to put the one-connect cable inside the wall - looks fantastic when cleanly installed. 3. operating system is clunky, bloated, and has annoying adverts so my advice is to run a 3rd party source (e.g. Apple TV 4k or ideally a high spec PC with wireless peripherals) and you'll never have to see it again. 4. Take your time to configure the TV correctly - having a late model Samsung phone allows you to auto-calibrate, but also you need to spend the time with your source devices to make sure the resolution, refresh rate, HDR settings, etc. are set correctly - so expect it to take a bit of trial and error to dial it in. Enjoy!

Hey Caleb👋 I've been thinking of updating my old surround receiver to a 9.2 8K model, probably a Yamaha or Pioneer along with my TV. My dilemma is that both Hisense and TCL seem to be making one of the HDMI 2.0 ports the ARC/eARC ports and reserving the 2.1 ports for game consoles etc. My question is, "is this going to be the new standard to prioritise the use of sound bars for audio instead of using a receiver? Kind of makes the point of buying a 8K receiver mute if it can only connect to a hdmi 2.0 port. 🤷🏻♂️

Even with that, I'll have to move my front speakers out a bit and remount my down firing center channel that's above the TV. Anything larger would mean even more work. Don't need the hassle. I can't imagine sitting that distance from something 80"+. That's crazy.

Your last 2 3 TV videos have been fantastic. Easily got me upto speed with the latest gear and what stuff is actually worth buying and pound for pound which size to level of quality of TV is the sweet spot. I think size makes more of a difference in viewing pleasure the test patterns etc are useful tools as an indication but ultimately when you use your eyes you have got to work out which looks best to you. It's very hard to do for people with little electronics experience. I worry about brightness and upscaling of lower quality content the most. It seems to me that I always took a liking to Sony's LCD efforts. Someone else clued up that didn't know me gave me the same answer. My cousin's Sony TV with KZbin etc from 12 years ago looked amazing watching top gear. I have never seen a TV make online content look so good like it was broadcasting directly to the set. So I got high hopes for the new Sonys. But I don't mind the samung picture either but with low grade material I worry it won't look so great... 4k Samsung looks amazing.. I would also buy a Philips or Panasonic oled if their upscalers are amazing especially because they go on special offer a lot more over Sony products.

A kaleidoscope player is like four or $5000 just for the player. Go with physical media and buy a Panasonic 4k player. There’s a $200, $400-$500 option. Plus once you own a disc you don’t have to worry about losing your content. With digital if a platform gets sold or goes out of business or loses the rights you can lose the right to your content/ movie.

Love Caleb but I think using any "expert's" formula for viewing distance is ridiculous and most of those formulas are years old and outdated. Newer mid-tier on up TVs are so good that as long as you're more than 6 ft away get the biggest dang TV you can't get and enjoy the immersive experience -I sit about 8 ft away and I recently purchased an 85-inch and at first thought it was a bit much much but really came to enjoy it. Unfortunately had some quality control issues so I moved down to a higher quality brand's 75-inch to keep things at similar price point put the lack of size definitely impacts the overall experience and I find myself missing the immersive experience of the larger size. Seriously thinking about biting the bullet and paying the premium to get into a better quality 85 inch. Listening to reviewers and talking to store personnel almost no one returns a TV because it's too big but lots of TVs get returned because purchasers realize they went too small.

I worked for a store back in the 2010's that sold TV's and tech in that catagory. I went fo TV deliveries now and again and one day I remember going to a home that had gotten a plasma set and the smallest plasma's got were 42 inch and that's what they got. They wanted a plasma because they were a much better display and especially 10-15 years ago. Well, maybe a week later if that, I was in the store working and they were talking about TV returns and one happened to be that 42 inch plasma, and I can remember what was said just like it was yesterday because how absurd it was to me. "Yeah, they liked the look of the plasma but the wife didn't want it because it was to big for her, they came in and chose a 27 inch LCD." "What, they choose that over the plasma, the plasma had a beautiful image." "Yeah I know, that TV she got also looks like crap. I bet the husband was upset about it?" "Yeah, I was there when he got the plasma, he was all smiles and in the store when his wife chose that 27 inch LCD he looked like he wanted cry. lol" In my opinion, I have no idea how anyone can find a 42 ince TV to big, I think they are way to small, maybe to big as a PC monitor. I was in shock and I laughed out loud when I heard she chose that crappy 27 inch LCD, they were the worse TV's in the store and it was so much worse then the CRT it replaced. Also, the CRT they had was a 27 inch, so the 27 inch LCD gave them a smaller screen then what they had. When I seen the 42 inch plasma in there home and on the stand, I also remember thinking how small it looked to the surroundings and they should have went with around a 50 inch, never did I think either of them would think it was to big, let alone being to big to the point of returning it for basically a turd.

Caleb I think you are doing great with the interviews and really provide something for the viewers instead of giving brands free marketing. One thing I noticed is that between 18:20 and 18:40 Bruce made some corrections to your statements that are hard to make out because he throws them in while you are talking. Would have been great if you pressed him a bit more on those as the LEDs aren't individually controllable and he clarifies that they are controlled per zone if I understood him correctly (for example 4 LEDs make a zone and only the zone can be controlled). *That also contradicts his next sentence* 🤔 Would be great to get a follow up on that!
