I really did used to hate popular things just because they were popular. Like I REFUSED to watch Wednesday when in first came out and just assumed it was bad based on its popularity. Then I realised I was basing my ENTIRE personality on listening to alternative indie music and not having tiktok, and not watching all the popular shows. Now I realise that you can still like things that are popular and you're not better than others because you like underground music or whatever. Your interests aren't more special or different just because they aren't the mainstream and neither are you! Now I can just watch popular things and enjoy them!! (I watched Wednesday and didn't like it much, but at least I tried)

I got some drama surrounding one of my friends (we’ll call her Ally). So basically we’re all freshman and as soon as Ally turns 15 the super senior of our school comes waltzing in and starts hitting on her. I used to hate things a lot and was super negative. i used to hate sour by olivia rodrigo so much just because it was popular. I didn’t even listen to it yet. but then I actually listened to the music and I really enjoyed it. After some time, I started not liking it as much because i heard some people thinking it was bad and that she was just complaining. i only listened to it VERY minimally for over a year. about two weeks ago, I started watching HTHaze and he is spectacular. He gives any music a fair shot. watching him react to sour was amazing! after I started watching his videos more I realize that the negativity i was around is so horrible. Like why not just have fun! it’s ok to not like something but having an open mind is so important and life becomes more fun too! i feel kinda bad for the people hating on taylor’s music and her fans on instagram when they have a super different taste in music like what a sad life to live tbh

My drama: I had 3 close friends but one of them (I’ll call her Louise) said bad stuff about herself like how she said she was a burden to her parents and stuff like that. The way she said it made it seem like it was a joke or she didn’t really mean it. My best friend at the time (I’ll call her Stacy), used to complain about how much Louise was getting on her nerves and was annoying. Then one day, Louise told me that Stacy said that they weren’t “compatible as friends” and left her. Me, Stacy, and Louise had other friends but Stacy somehow convinced our other friends that Louise was annoying. Louise also kinda got on my nerves just a little bit cus she would randomly say things like how big my forehead is or how oily my face is but she never says that stuff about Stacy or anyone else. I’m still friends with Louise but not Stacy because my old friends basically bully Louise now and call her names which she doesn’t deserve because she’s nice but I still miss Stacie and she’s still kinda nice to me but she just doesn’t talk to me.

I'm so glad you made this because this is actually something I've been thinking about a lot. I've been trying to stay open-minded because today ppl are SO obsessed over being different and it can really influence your decisions, which is actually so ironic because it almost becomes this mob-like mentality. Obviously, it's good to have differences in your interests, and *only* sticking to popular stuff when you have access to other things is pretty lame in my opinion, but at the same time if my Spotify wrapped has only the biggest artists in the world then maybe it's because they just make good music 😭liking popular things doesn't make your boring or lame, being closed-minded does.

I remember I had friends that in hindsight probably felt the same way that you described feeling. When I would recommend a movie or song they would look at it and say “I don’t know what that is.” Then I would tell them and show them stuff about it but then they would still just say “No I’m not gonna watch that. I haven’t heard of it.” Meanwhile I would listen to their songs and watch their shows. We aren’t friends anymore simply because they moved away.

Growing up i definitely thought that if I didn't like everything that everyone else liked then I was weird, and no one would like me. I started saying I liked movies and music and styles that I didn't really like but I was just saying i liked it because everyone else did. I used to wear a lot of pink because my "friends" would, or I would say I watch Outer Banks and Wednesday stuff even though i HATE pink and I think Outer Banks and Wednesday is overrated. And now I have faced the fact that I love 80s things. I walk into school everyday listening to my Walkman (which they can't take away because it's not a phone (; ) and people are gonna be like wth is that but i honestly don't care anymore. And even though I love Madonna and Kate Bush I also love Tayler Swift and Olivia Rodrigo. I love Back To The Future and Gremlins. But I also love Stranger Things and Marvel. No cause I don’t have any social media, no tiktok, I don’t listen to pop music, don’t watch movies. I just find popular stuff a bit repetitive, but there are always those random things in them that I love and find super nice. I’m a big fan of classical music, but also vocaloid, indie, jpop, and a bit of kpop. I used to hate popular stuff and found it stupid, but I realized that’s kind of stupid and now I genuinely just watch or listen to what I find nice or cool. I don’t like pop music in general because of the repetitiveness, sort of soulless vibe to the songs, it feels like most of them are just the same thing over and over, minimal effort, a lot less hard work. Not all of it, but a good portion. I just don’t watch many shows or movies in general, but I like a few horror films, anime, a few dramas and non animated shows. Typically ones that have great ideas and effort, emotion and hard work. With what I like now, I find just by what I watch or listen to it’s made me happier than only following what’s popular. Not everyone is the same, and I don’t think pop is for everyone. Some of my favorite composers are Chopin, Sibelius, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Ravel. I really love Hilary Hahn, Alice Sara Ott, Ray Chen, and Sabine Meyer’s playing as musicians in our time. I’m a big fan of vocaloid artists like mafumafu, Kikuo, PinocchioP, Harumakigohan, and Kairikibear. I love love love TUYU, Eve, and Yorushika!

I was the kind of person who went through the opposite phase just a little bit. Never too intense but I was weary of popular things especially with animated movies I genuinely felt like the “odd” ones were sort of clunky and comforting. But I digress. When he described how he felt in the past towards mom and pop shops I felt like a violent fight or flight and felt like reverting into that phase. Mom and pop shops are so comforting and I’ve known owners who worked very hard. But I’m glad I’m out of that phase.

Hi Ben, here’s my drama. So I have this best friend that I’ve been best friends with since I was very little. We then both go to the same new school and have no classes together, and she starts making lots of friends and is in many friend groups, whereas I don’t have any. But there was this one friend that I actually really enjoyed hanging out with at our old school who also went to our new school. So we got closer, and it was pretty obvious that I was choosing to hang out with him more and would just get more happy to see them than my other friend. Amélie is one of my favorite movies of all time but I get my balls busted on all sides - my kid said it's a "pick me" movie to like and my friends won't watch it because it's in French with subtitles. We're big music nerds, (my partner is a singer/songwriter and two of our close friends were on The Voice) - our youngest is named after a Beatle (right down to her nickname being one of their songs) but our oldest, their dead name is a popular song title and their real name is after my favorite indie artist (which was the name I originally wanted for them even when they were born female). hey ben i have some #drama: .me and a friend in elementary school, let's call her Yandere, had a close friend group. I thought we were all cool and chill, but apparently miss girl had a crush on me and would go like demon mode on my friends when i wasn't there. so, like last year i brought yandere up and my friend said, " i hated them because they didn't want us to steal you from us. anyway, that's my freaking elementary school drama.
