I just today received my resistance bands. My pull-up bar has been a struggle for weeks now. I can bench heavy full range and squat full range heavy. So why the trouble with pull-ups? Lack of familiarity and this is new for me. I’m 63 and realized I would injure myself if I didn’t get some help learning a “new to me”exercise. I enjoyed your well spoken intelligent KZbin video today. Thanks for the help in my over 60 fitness training.

I used bands for maybe 2 years to build up myself and since the year started I have not used bands for pullups at all. I also started doing heavy volume of pullups and chins, currently doing 10-15 reps per set. So around 50 per day perhaps, with one or two rest days here and there. I would say I could not have achieved this without bands for 1+ year. I weigh in around 90 kg at 189 cm so I feel really functionally strong at the moment! Something everyone should feel once in their lifetime :) I currently use bands for dips as I've neglected them, and it's working! I can now do dips without bands as well but it's ROUGH :D

Hi Andrew, I just wanted to say a qucik thanks for a wicked video and such a helpful explanation! I've heard some this before but I really appreciate the simple and unpretantious way you say it. Thanks v much :) I'm quite new to all of this, and have started working with my PT for a couple of months now, but he introduced me to banded pull-ups/chin-ups as tbh I was always so awful at them before! It makes so much sense the way you describe it as well as using them in general, as with the help of a band I could now make sure I was performing really solid, controlled pull-ups with great form, each and everytime, without wasting a ton of effort just even trying to do one terribly! Fast forward a few weeks/months, and now I'm reducing the resistance needed, dropping band sizes, and increasing the rep count of each set, but yet NEVER losing track of that good form as with the band it was able to become muscle memory before pilling on the challenge. I'm now even managing a few sets without a band which I couldn't dream of doing before without starting with bands! Thanks for a great resource and I'm off to check out the other videos! Best wishes, Gavin :)

Good video :) getting out there and using your muscles regularly is more important than avoiding exercises which might be ‘bad’, especially something as reliable and effective as a pull up!

100%!!!! So many get bogged down in inertia rather than simply moving more. Being able to move on our own volition is a gift that not everybody has and that alone should be good enough. Our bodies are smart and adaptable things

Absolutely love this!!!! The enjoyability of our sessions is so important. Debating on if something is perfect is to neglect that 80% of people don't even move their bodies at all. Keep pushing through and I'm sure you'll have the pull up in no time!!! 💪🏿💪🏿

I went from 6-5-4 banded pull-ups to 6-5-4 unbanded. My form is far from good but I prefer dealing with problems one by one, and now when I got my musles accustomed to pulling the body up I'm gonna fix my muscular memory (it doubtedly have solidified too well by now). Honestly, calling some well-known and broadly used equipment bad just makes the journey harder for novices.

Friendly reminder that over 75% of 24+ year old americans can‘t do a single pull up. With your 6 pull ups ur probably in the Top 15% of most fit adults already. Keep it up man great progess. The form will come. What I can tell u that helped me achieve more reps at pull ups were doing 10 (yes 10!) sets of Gym ring Dips every other day and 2 sets of hanging on the bar for 1 minute. You got this and by the end of this year ur at 8!

I never used bands for anything and I'm fairly new to calisthenics. By seeing other people using it I have the impression that depending on the excercise the band kinda "forces" your body out of the ideal form, in a way that you have to fight the resistance to maintain good form. Since I never used it, I'm not really sure whether this impression or right or not. Probably not since almost everyone uses bands to assist their training. I'll see if I buy some bands for myself to test them and see how it feels.

As some one very overweight who still wants to work on pull-ups would doing my main sets of pull-ups with bands and then doing partials at the bottom to really hammer out the initial pull be a good idea? Like once I can no longer get chin to the bar I do a set or smthn of scap pull-ups?
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd 3 ай бұрын
That's a quality idea. Drop sets (in this case using partials to increase volume) will help you get stronger. Just be sure to still aim for pull reps and over time you will improve. p.s. good job on you for getting started with this btw!! Good hustle 💪🏿

heyho, massive thanks for making these, many of your videos greatly help me to sniff out some of the many mistakes i make during my callisthenics journey. I have a little(big) question; When i do pushups, situps, pullups, or even splits, my neck tends to get very stiff, and i even end up with a little muscular tinitus on my left ear. Due to incorrect posturing my body is very disbalanced, including a larger left trapezius. Im working on fixing my posture and disbalances, but do you have any tipps, insights or video recommendations for me ?

No worries, and glad you're enjoying the channel. I do have some tips actually as I had a similar problem a few years back! The first tip I'd give you is to try out this follow along: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4DVnnt7f7SEirc All my favourite posture improvers are in there. And also, every time you notice yourself in bad posture, roll your shoulders back, squeeze your shoulder blades together and try to tuck your chin into your neck while keeping your head in a straight line with your spine. I plan on doing a posture video in future so look out for it 👊🏿

Thanks for the pushback on the "everything you know is wrong!" that gets used a bit too much for views. Having said that, there is another simple way to add assistance: just put a stool or something under so that when standing up your chin clears the bar, and use your legs to assist. The disadvantage is it is a bit less consistent (since you can't control exactly how much your legs are pushing every time), but the advantage is being able to have different resistance curves and on-the-fly changing the overall assistance. Can basically pick a number of reps to do and concentrate on keeping it just difficult enough to complete.
