I love hearing the joy you take in your library. Don't think of it as small, think of it as growing, a work in progress. I love looking at my library sometimes. It doesn't matter that the shelves are mismatched and cheap, it matters to me that they are full. Growing up my family couldn't afford to buy me books, they just didn't have the extra money for them. Now, I still don't have a lot of extra money, but that's what charity shops (we call them thrift stores in the US) are for. Enjoy your books, however many you have. Thanks for what you do.

I try not to compare myself to people online. I read for enjoyment and in my own pace, which I know is pretty slow most of the time. Also it's very important to get out, and I feel very anxious, when leaving my house, but I try to go on walks or take the train when there's not alot of people

I think a lot of people get caught up in acquiring new books rather than them growing organically over their lifetime. A lot of people don’t realise that even a lot of people on KZbin or Instagram have been collecting books for 10+ years. I’m also easily influenced and very possibly have ADHD so I chase the dopamine hit of buying books. I bought a lot over two years and always feel like it’s not enough. But I have 180+ unread books I need to read so over the last few months I’ve been focusing on reading what I have so I don’t miss out on them! I think it can also just lead to burnout and feeling crap cause you aren’t reaching goals of these people whose job it is to read and therefore don’t have regular 9-5 jobs. Thanks for making us “normal” people feel normal, and get better soon!

I’m retired and I can barely manage 4 a month. In the last few months I’ve read only 4, two of which I’m still reading. You are 100 percent correct in that if I’m reading my depression is in a good place. Life intrudes on your pastimes. Last year my wife fell and fractured her shoulder needing surgery which meant for the next few months I was in carer mode. Books could wait, Reading took a back seat. Aim for reading one hour a day for me 30 to 60 pages depending on the book and don’t stress if you can’t. Great channel.

i feel seen by this, I dont have space, i have piles of books and a few second hand book shelves. (actually need to get hubs to build me one in the new year) i dont have pretty editions, or rolling ladders, (2 bed council house here too) make your space what you love and enjoy. Regarding reading, for me, it depends on the books, some months i read like 1-3, then other months i can read 10 maybe? but they are shorter books, also this is while, working, crafting, caring for family. reading is my down time :) brill video, hope you feel better soon mate. Whew ... I'm four chapters into "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett. One book doesn't feel like enough for a whole month, but it's a chunky one, and I also have December things to do. I went with friends to "Peppermint Pops" a Christmas performance by our local symphony. That was fun -- even when the little girl behind me kept repeating loudly -- "I have to pee, I have to pee, I have to pee." The Grinch was also in the house and there was a Christmas carol sing-a-long. Fun for all.

In regards to how many books people read, I don't think that you can read more than four books a month (for adult books, anyway.) The last time I read a massive number of books that had an higher average than that was in the 6 weeks holidays when I was a teenager and that was because the books were on average were about 200 - 250 pages long and mostly aimed at a young audience. At a stretch, I could probably get through a couple of Harry Dresden books in a week, but not more than that, and page length of books can be so variable - if you have a 500 - 800 page book then that could easily take about a couple of weeks if you set aside time to read everyday. I get through audiobooks quicker, and my reading rate for kindle is slightly faster, because if I'm interrupted I don't have to flip back to the previous page if I'm not at the start of a chapter, or if there isn't a break in it. So all I can say to people, don't worry if you are reading less than others. At one point, I also took a long break from reading because an illness I had left me with brain fog for a long time and it ruined my concentration for reading, and I was burnt out from reading because of university combined with choosing a lot of books to read that I didn't really like. More recently, I've got problems with my eye sight (that's why I started listening to audio books - there is an audio book library called Listening Books in the UK that help people who find reading physical books difficult that's about £30 a year.) Folks shouldn't feel like that they have to read classics and other 'high brow' literature books, either if it's not what you're into - I find a lot of people online are into that. Folks shouldn't have to feel like they need to read lots of new releases, or books that are trending because they've been made into a TV show or film unless they want to, and if you can't afford new books, re-reading old favourites is just as good.

The only reason i used to read 10-15 books a month is really because i did pretty much nothing else. I also can't sleep, so often i spent 4 am to 7 am or other random hours reading... We moved to a new town as well 2 yrs ago, and haven't made friends yet, so books were sort of something to do... 😅 Also audio books. I'm on maternity leave at the moment amd still listen to audio books. Reading physically is more difficult now, but i do love listening to stuff

I think the speed that some people online claim to listen to audiobooks is bull 😂 It's not physically possible to understand and retain what's being said. So what is the point? They just want to be able to claim that they consumed the book.
