5’8” is average height YES, but the modern trend is that if you’re under 6ft you’re short. It used to be the 5’5” and under club but gen z raised the standard (literally) so now men under 6’ happily joke about being short kings. Now it _is_ worth noting that all genders participate in the stereotype-for every woman swiping left on tinder, there are just as many “alpha chad” men on podcasts acting as if height = worth. I think my current pet peeve is talking to a guy-I’m in a relationship so they’re not even motivated by flirting, or they better not be-and they just blatantly lie about their height. I’m 5’6”* and have had men who are barely above me claim to be 5’10” or over, but the truly arrogant thought I wouldn’t notice if they said 6’ or above despite me having functioning eyes. *Worth noting is I myself have a “height insecurity” story: my ID says I’m 5’5”! So when people ask my height I have to clarify that despite every doctor’s appointment noting I’m over 5’5”, my ID tells a different story. I always deliver the information up front to make sure people know I’m not hiding behind one extra inch 🙄 as if it would make a difference, I’m short anyway! But sometimes it has the opposite effect and people think me willing to talk about it = I’m being defensive or compensating somehow. So there’s no way to win, at least not until 2026 when I get my ID renewed. Actually, it’s been suggested to me before that since I was assigned female at birth, the person at the DMV probably thought they were being nice to me by being ‘charitable’ with my height and shrinking me a little. To make me seem cuter, I guess? So height standards definitely remain weird no matter your gender!

Passing trends and phases cause body dysmorphia in people all the time-from the brazilian butt lift to now “the heroin chic comeback” where celebrities are having surgery to remove what they added and be as thin as possible-and the best way to ensure people’s tastes keep on passing through is to completely ignore it. Women’s decision to ignore heroin chic 2.0 was deliberate. They already reached a consensus that a body type isn’t fashion & that genetics decide what your body will be shaped like: getting surgery to enhance breasts and thighs just to remove them in another surgery 5 years later is off the table. They’re not falling for it. This is where personal anecdotal bias comes into account because 99% of the women I’ve interacted with have a horror story about seeing a man’s height on tinder, swiping right because being 5’11” or below is still attractive, and dealing with the raging hormones of an insecure man who won’t shut the fuck up about how every woman he’s been with left him over his height. The 1% who complained to me about a man’s height were tall women who are sick of getting the “stop wearing heels it hurts my feelings uwu” demands. 60% of the men I’ve interacted with practically walk around with an open sore they keep picking at as if being so clearly wounded about such an ultimately inconsequential aspect of their appearance will draw women over out of pity. The 40% who didn’t weren’t 5’11” or 5’10” they were _noticeably_ short. Like 5’5”/5’4” and under range. Either conflict breeds strength or they were so clear-cut out of the anti-short king dating pool that they didn’t have experiences like that. Men 6’ and over weren’t so secure though. If a guy was 6’3” and the guy next to him said he was 6’4”, the first guy will blurt out that he’s 6’5” no matter who’s in the room to listen. That’s over the 6’ minimum. There’s literally no point to one-upping each other like that if not for the illusion of added dominance. All this considered I’ve pretty much always been willing to bet the men women complain about saying every woman leaves them over height… they probably made it the issue in their relationship. Not to gaslight gatekeep girlboss the both of you, but I’m almost certain their constant whinging and insecurity drove the women away (because that’s what the women literally said) and then he’d come up with a new “every woman dumps me over height!” story. Fumbling the bag them-damn-selves and then getting all martyr about it.
