I am an engineer working on Mangla Dam in Pakistan from over last 10 years. Mangla and Tarbela dam are ensuring food security and supporting economy in Pakistan through generation of cheap and environment friendly electricity. I don't agree with the comments of the speaker and have following comments to offer please: 1. He (Speaker) seems a professor and professor normally don't have practical experience. 2. He seems not having served on any dam so dont have idea, what dams have done for Pakistan or what dam do for a country. 3. We have only two mega dams which definitely canot stop all water. 4. For example, River Jhelum has average annual Inflows of about 23 MAF and only one dam (Mangla with storage capacity of only 7.3 MAF) can't store all water. So there is need to build more dams. e.g. if we have 03 dams like Mangla at Jhelum River there will be no downstream flooding. Similarly, Indus River has average annual Inflows about 64 MAF and we have only one Mega Storage (Tarbela) at Indus River with storage capacity of only 6 MAF. So, how can Tarbela Dam stop all floods? Shouldn't we have more dams so that floods are better controlled? 5. In Pakistan, we have not built dams for floods only. We have built two said mega dams just to compensate loss of irrigation water caused by giving right of water of 03 eastern rivers to India. These dams are to ensure our food security. 2ndly these produce electricity to support our industry. There by- product is flood mitigation. When dam is empty to some extent, large floods can be managed, but when dam is full, options for flood management are very limited. 6. There is a lobby in Pakistan which is working against dams for the reason best known to many. India has built more than 5000 dams, USA more than 9,000 and China more than 23,000 dams and they are leading the world. And we have only two mega dams and more than 200 small dams which are not enough to fulfill water and power requirements for our 220 Million people. 7. Electricity in Pakistan is expansive because we are producing only 35% electricity from water and about 60% from oil and gas. For cheap electricity we need to generate more electricity from water means need to construct more dams. 8. Even in historic max. Flood of 1992, outflows from Mangla Dam were less than the Peak inflows. Max. Outflow was 932,000 while peak Inflow was 11,40,000 cfs. And we should also remember that, during 1992 flood, Mangla dam was already full of water, when flood was received. 9. Similarly during Super Flood- 2010 at Indus River, inflows at Tarbela Dam were around 8,35,000 cfs and outflows were about 6,04,000 cfs. So, Tarbela dam did performed flood management during historic max.flood . 2010 flood (with inflow volume 40 MAF as per his statement), could have been managed well, if there would have been few more dams like Tarbela at Indus River. And if there would have been Kalabagh Dam, devastation should have been half than actually happened. 10. May Allah Almighty guide us to right path and guide us to think in the interest of this nation and Pakistan. God bless Pakistan always. God bless everyone who is on right Path.

Large dams may have their downfalls but at that time these dams were made, there were no alternate options like solar. Hydro was the cheapest solution at that time with by product benefits such as water storage. I agree with generating power from solar but we need small dams to mitigate the flood impacts and storage of water as Pakistan is one of the 7 most affected country from climate change. If we don't store water we can not survive.

India has 5000+ dams while Pakistan only has about 150+ dams However, their hydro capacity is only 7 times more than Pakistan My guess is that India is using many smaller dams. Is that a better option to control flooding and making electricity? What can we learn from India's experience so far?

Excellent video we have been raising these issues through twitter. Oxford University report says when Tarbella was completed it was 3xtimes of its actual budget. Smaller dams reservoirs or better management of existing wetlands is preferable than mega dams. In amazon they have giver human rights to the rivers. These mega dams destroy natural ecosystems. In 1930s this movement was launched to give loan to countries for making dams, it was a debt trap. Europe has abondened it's Dams while we are building another one with 14billion dollars loan/investment, in an area where Glofs, landslides are normal. Dams means more security, someone gets the contract for cement someone get the contract for steel. It's all for someone else's good.

I don't know what this doc is preaching but what I could get is; he is against building dams (by highlighting one side of the picture whilst completely ignoring the other side of the picture) and strong orator of solar energy system. At least, he should have weighed in both sides of the picture and had his conclusion. This literally has brought in more confusion amongst the audience instead of educating them.

Dams have more cons than pros, sensations and emotions aside, first of all dams primary oyurpose is water sotrage never electricity generation, dams are created to store water and then generators are added because thats just free energy, if your sole purpose is energy generation than this is very inefficient way, since they cost tooo tooo much in initial investment, 1500 billion rupees for fucking few thouamd megawats in case.of mohamand dam, not to mention relocation and compensation for displaced people, not only that they take decades to build, destroy rivers delta, destroy the eco systems of area and much more

A very controversial person in water sector. Dams are designed against some return floods e.g 1000 year return period flood, which mean that the designed dam will absorb the peak of the flood and attenuate it. A country need water storages for at least 3 months, while Pakistan has only 30 days storages as compared to India (150 days), Egypt (700 days). Thats why we need dams.

He just showed one side of story. What about Acors of land that will produce agriculture due to Dams? What will be effect of Dams when we need water in dry season? Dams also support Birds, Mandank etc. And who says you make only big dams make small ones as well. He is talking about solar, does he know the level of Solar Technology in Pakistan? Not in Pakistan but worldwide solar is only 35% efficient at MAX with proto type products. Wile on commercial products that efficiency is 20%.

The only solution to energy crisis is nuclear energy. Also If you look in to history we as humans have never going from more dense energy source to less dense energy source. Everyone has his own viewpoint but i will like if this gentleman answers me some question. 1) Pakistan has historically been an agricultural country so dont you think that presence of dam has another benefit to provide water besides electric power generation? 2) no matter what 100% of electricity cannot be produced by a single source as solar is vulnerable to weather similarly hydropower has its own limitations but we will have to construct more dams. 3) if series of dams are built on the same river we can avoid flooding by distributing water in the dams and also can store water for future use even if it fails to save towns in front of flood wave Comments will be appreciated

We need Small Multiple Dams to control the flow and conserve water. If your water is coming from India you need to need to control it otherwise we have already facing drought and floods. Water saved in the Dam are primarily used for irrigation during off season and when you don't have enough rainfall. The power generation is additional bonus that you can get with the Dam. I agree that in today's economy it would not be feasible to make Dam solely for power generation but Dams, Barrages and Canals are necessary for fresh water conservation.

Pakistan needs a systematic running water storage system like Holland by making canals in water scarce areas of Balochistan where it's not that populous and it will make millions of acre of land fit for cultivation but Solar economy thing strikes but it's gets very hot around solar panels and it forcibly makes clouds rain so it is also hazardous for environment that's why we can't have solar panels in Africa because it will kill Amazon and that will be 32% less oxygen ...

We already are witnessing how International community is getting partial towards India. But there could be a better solution on Indo-pak water conflict, and as per my understanding we can still use it better if we give it in the hands of technocrats instead of politicians and bureaucrates.

Dams are not a product wchish is mde from zero. It is a ready made land structure which is then converted in water reservoir. So the cost which this intellectual person is assuming is not based on facts. It is understood that if you installed turbine on the way of water stream downwards, it will create electricity. Secondly the prime purpose of dams is to store water for agriculture and human need. Its secondary purposr is to create electricity which is now become a prime purpose unfortunately because of electricity shortfall. So the dams are now used for dual purpose, arigation of barren land as well as electricity and other purpose. Yes I agree with his argument for one reason only that you can't make dams where its feasibility is not possible.for example if you want to mke a dam in southern punjab or in sindh it will need a huge cost which pakistan can't afford at ll. Secondly this dam will fulfill only one need that is for agriculture but you cannot make electricity because you dont have natural waterfall area for this purpose. Simply the conclusion is dams are best and easy source of electricity, agriculture, for multiple humen needs and natural flood control project.

Disappointing.. we are generating power from imported fuels which is a big dent to our economy.. ecological system will not be be impacted through these dams as first the water is released on its natural path and excessive water is being stored..

Doctor---very deceptive video---. Dams are not build to stop floods---that is a misnomer---a misconception---. Dams are build to store water. There is a machine called dredger----it was supposed to be used 24/7 right from day one to solve the problems of silt. Dredgers keep working in ports---why---if they are not used---the ports would become useless after awhile. I lived in sukkur in early 70's in my teens---. There was an old machine parked on the indus river---. an old sukkur hand told me this was a dredger---that broke years ago---. It was supposed to be used 24/7 to clear the silt from accumulating before the barrage. Your information is misleading.
