I agree 100% with adam. From my personal exercise i used to say to myself i am a hypertrophy guy i dont need to do deadlifts, i even said that to my local gym instructor. My back did develop without deadlift. I had wide back but thin like paper lol no thickness but when i started doing deadlift my god my back thickness improved by a distance. Deadlift not only build back thickness you even feel like hulk after 2 to 3 months of consistently deadlifting and you feel like you can crush someone with your new found hand grip. You grip improves massively. I hated deadlift because it is hard and effect your energy level alot but once you get used to it you will love it. You feel powerful

@@mrnickcyp123 exactly, is your focus is to build muscle skip it but if you want to have good posture, strong grip and strong glutes deadlifts are very good for that and worth doing, yeah it's risky if you lift a heavy weight you can't handle but most people don't need to lift super heavy, just doing the movement with light to moderate weight will improve your posture, grip strenght, glutes and hamstrings, for people who have lower back and hip pain strong glutes and hamstrings are very important

I agree squats also do the same for me, but as a 60year old I find that I can load deadlift a lot more than I can squat. I find two sets of deadlift does a good job of warming up my whole body and do three sets of squats after deadlift. I'm at an age now where it is hard to recover from a heavy leg day. So I find it easier on my body now to spread it out during the week. If that makes sense to you?

This is the current "pull" routine I've been working on for the past while, and I'm loving the effect it's been having on my back - the deadlift (I believe) has conditioned my back for all the other vertical and horizontal pulls(!!!): - 5x5 deadlift - 3x8 neutral-grip pullup (with the neutral grip I feel a better contraction in my lower lats) - 3x8-12 barbell row - 2x12 (single-arm) cable high row - 2x12 (single-arm) seated cable row

Whether or not heavy compounds are recommended is a good litmus test for KZbin channels. All these guys get strong through heavy compounds, get on gear after they’re strong, do a bunch of isolation stuff and get huge, and then they tell beginners that they don’t need to do heavy compounds. The heavy compounds allow you to do the requisite weight to get big on isolation movements.

I can attest what they are saying. I was actually quite good at deadlift technique and was always able to deadlift twice my bodyweight at any given day, so I never took it seriously. But during last 3-4 months, I took it seriously and programed it regularly and gave up the rows, pull ups, etc. I started just one working set pushed close to failure in 12-16 reps at moderate weights. That's all. Surprisingly, I not only gained some muscle mass, but I also added a few reps to chin ups, pull ups, and even in HSPU at my increased bodyweight and without doing anyone of these exercises during this time period. I am not going to quit deadlift anytime soon in future.

Deadlifts are the ultimate compound exercise and engage more muscles than any other single weightlifting exercise. Anyone who doubts it needs to perform 3 or 4 heavy sets and they'll get it. I did squats, not deadlifts, when I was younger. When you watch someone doing a deadlift, you'll think it looks simple and easy, but when you do them, you instantly learn that they are very demanding. If you have a cable machine, ideally a functional trainer, you can also do a hybrid of a deadlift movement with a deep squat called the called the "Brignole squat."

Is RDL a good replacement?
@gabrielcarvalho4853
@gabrielcarvalho4853 Жыл бұрын
 @Julian Lai It'll focus intensely on hamstring & glutes since they are doing the movement. Others muscles generally have a stabilization or isometric contraction role, such as the traps, lats, quads and spinal erectors. The RDL is an excellent hamstring & glute exercise, even more than conventional, since the contractions and the movement itself allow for high targeting of both. However, you will be sacrificing the quantity of muscles that will be highly stimulated with the Conventional deadlift. Good lifting brother.

@@s9209122222 Relatively high rep deadlifts (14-20+) are very taxing on the central nervous system. Personally, I do not like them. I would recommend lowering the weight, and performing sets of 8-10 reps, while keeping 4-3 reps in reserve to avoid tiring yourself out too much. Then add isolation exercises to cover muscles that may have not been properly stimulated enough, and to feel a better mind-muscle connection, but the latter part is up to you, since the importance of mind-muscle connection is controversial.

I used to waste time doing dumb exercises like bicep curls and tricep kickbacks. These days I go for the important major lifts and that's it. Bench Squats Deadlifts. Pullups Chinups Dips. That's all you need. Just focus on these six. You'll save a bunch of time too.

I’ve seen this in my own personal life. I could rep out heavy pull ups with 65 pounds for sets of 6-8 and could only deadlift 405 at my max vs my cousin who deadlifted 565 for his max . His back was way thicker than mine and wider.

Talking about Deadlifts and not mentioning fatigue is kinda ignoring the main point of the counter argument. Yeah the raw stimulus is super high, but the fatigue can get suuuper high. Rows and Stiff legged deadlifts can get the same stimulus to the muscle, and have much lower fatigue.

Deadlifts also develop stability and the central drive needed for any free weight movement. If you try to do heavy bent rows with weak ass spinal erectors, it just doesn't work as well. + deadlifts are fun as hell

@justincain2702 5 ай бұрын
@@abusumayah9540 I gave an example, bent rows. I don't have access to machines so If I don't have a strong deadlift, my bent rows feel much harder on my lower back and I get less of a stimulus for my rhomboids and lats. Having a strong deadlift also transfers nicely to any manual labor work, especially lifting boxes or furniture from the floor. I dunno why KZbin notified me of a reply to a year old comment lol.

A few years ago I spent 6 months deadlifting a half million pounds. Yes that actually happened. I can say with 100% certainty that I gained muscle and looked more jacked than I've ever looked in my life. That stunt leveled me up, although I wouldn't put myself through it again.

If you are religious about your deadlift program (as well as back squats), you will find your upper body growth will accelerate. You don't need to do a whole lot of upper body lifts if you do the two biggest compound lifts...DL and Squats. The upper body follows along. For several years, while training boxing 4-5 days a week, I really couldn't train with weights a whole lot on my upper body as the recovery/fatigue would destroy my boxing...I did just calisthenics for upper body (pushups, pullups, dips) and then DL and Squat...I was quite jacked.

7:25 How would you suggest plugging deadlifts into my programming? Instead of doing a 2 day upper and lower split, do a 3 day upper, lower, than full (with deadlifts)? I've thought about this as I've been adding deadlifts into my 2-day split, but wondering how that should work because it's both back and legs.
@tylerfabish5578

Do deadlifts on back day and squats on leg day. Space each one 3 or 4 days apart. Like Saturday and Tuesday workouts to allow recovery time in between. And maybe consider taking a week off once every 6 to 8 weeks and just focus on cardio and stretching, sauna or ice bath or whatever it is to relax. The weeks off are so critical for longevity of your joints and ligaments

Guys great discussion. However there are respected pros who argue that deadlifts are not a good hypertrophy exercise based on the fact that the regular deadlift does not have much of an eccentric phase which is very important for muscle growth. As for the Sumo Deadlift it's very much a leverage lift where you can lift big weights and not have the associated hypertrophic effect which you expect. They favor the RDL for mass building. This is a sensible argument I feel. Anyone has any thoughts on this?

I'm not a fan of the strength to fatigue ratio of deadlifts. Also for a lot of people, they just don't have the biomechanics for a BB deadlift, they can either choose to scrape their shins with the bar or break their back, so a trap bar deadlift or romanian deadlift are far superior to BB deadlifts, especially if modern studies are to be believed and eccentric lifting is where a lot of muscle is gained. The only muscles that go through their range of motion under load during a deadlift are your glutes primarily and then your bi articular hamstrings to a small extent. The deadlift builds your back isometrically, you would arguably get a bigger back by just bending over as if you were doing a BB row and holding a weight for time, or by doing weighted carries or goblet squats, there is nothing different from these movements and a deadlift in regards to building your back. If you believe a deadlift builds your back more than back focused movements, barring novel stimulus, you are likely introducing small movements in your back when you deadlift, which will increase the chance of injury. That being said, the only way you should train your back is isometrically, as doing things like hypers or supermans does place a phenomenal amount of load on the spine, its just that the deadlift specifically targets the glutes and it is primarily a glute exercise and should not be seen as a back exercise as it will only blow up your back in the context of it being a novel movement. People get big doing deadlifts because they do very heavy deadlifts that are very dangerous on top of being young and being on copious amounts of PEDs which helps prevent injury tremendously. Ronnie Coleman has had a dozen or more surgeries on his back and he's in unimaginable pain for the lifting he did to get to where he is, he is a good example of how not to lift.

Most people who claim the deadlift doesn't do much for hypertrophy are making the mistake assuming that you have to have a solid pump and feel burn in the muscle. Deadlift usually does not do any of this because by nature it sorta spreads the fatigue up across the board. Pound for pound I doubt anything puts on more muscle across the whole body than deadlift.
