It is a pretty good bike the ecotric hammer. Getting parts and service is another story. The last year I ordered a battery and it took more than a month to receive it so I can go camping. I got the wrong battery and I went camping anyway because the battery was a quarter of an inch too high to fit in the hole so I've been moving the little rail up and down every time I change a battery. So the rail is getting worn. I want to put new brake pads it is tektro hydraulic brakes do you sell those? I will look. I want to buy two more batteries for the ecotric hammer and I don't believe you have them. So I knew this was going to happen everything in the stores and everything else is made in China and it's going up and how is that helping us with a tariff? And Biden isn't much better because he needs to do something about this issue and no I shouldn't talk about politics religion or other things.

@@specialist-in-tech Well I wish the others luck in mainland China with the 25% tariffs. Taiwan it not the only player. Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, and many others make bikes and motorcycles. You don't change with the times you may lose big time. I am very happy with my Espin and the extra battery for it is coming in a week. Many other companies you look for a battery and they don't know if or when they can get one to you. Espin also responds to customer service the next day via email or phone. @@specialist-in-tech Somehow every time since the 50s when the demand comes, in a few years the companies seem to ramp up to meet the demand. Sure, not in a week or a month but it eventually catches up. I hear my friends on other social media sights saying electric cars are doomed because there is no infrastructure to charge them, and there is not a lot now, only a few around me but I think if the demand is there the supply will catch up and the nay sayers will somehow not remember what they said in the past. With Ebikes I think like with ordinary bikes, we are hitting a peak demand and in two or three years it will drop sharply. Not to what it used to be, but a lot less than the present demand.

@@specialist-in-tech I can see that the Espin bike is a basic generic frame and motor with added on parts which I can get at a local bike shop. Another reason I bought it by the way. My first electric bike I built myself from parts. It was a 1980s Murray ten speed. I was quite surprised that it is roughly the same performance as my Espin Sport with some of this due to the fact it is a much lighter frame than the Sport. I may even take an aluminum frame cruiser and build it out to be electric as well. I have literally a box full of lithium cells to build my own battery packs so the next bike will only need the motor and controller. :)

Bolton is close to being right on a lot of points, but its a lot more complex than he articulates on a number of levels. Ebike pricing has a lot more to do with what the 'market will bear', and you have ebikes literally priced at nearly every $100 increment from $600 (whackjob cheapos on Spamazon) to $15,000 (whackjob over priced stuff) from Specialized or Trek. Raw materials have been hoarded now for years by China, and the entire bike industry and now ebike industry has painted itself into a problematic corner, by dumping all manufacturing in buyer countries, and leaving it all in the hands of one country, and that is CHINA. So China has a total LOCK on the entire supply chain, which from a pricing standpoint, is the WORST possible scenario for any product being manufacturered. This is not limited to bikes or ebikes, and the US has handed over 30 years worth of manufacturing nearly everything, to China. The entire supply chain now being on the Asia continent, means there is no way in heck, that anyone is ever going to produce bikes or ebikes here in the US, or Canada, or Mexico to any material degree, because virtually every single part from the rubber tires to the spokes, to the rims, to the frames, to every other component is produced in China, Taiwan, and to a lesser extent places like Vietnam, or Indonesia. Labor costs having been going up every year in China since the year 2000. the vast majority of their factories are very old, very outdated, and very labor intensive. Not nearly enough real machinery or robotics, and that would be the way for other countries to 'catch' but the problem again is, no one firm can make every single different component, and so it makes no sense to even assemble in the US, as there is very little cost savings to do so. But more importantly, is now SUPPLY CHAIN RISKS, and China has now introduced to the entire planet, substantial risks. From Covid, to shipping logistics nightmares (goes way deeper than Suez debacle), China has set the world up for a ton of supply chain risks, not the least of which is getting the product from their country to other countries. The global sea ways are a mess, and china is responsible for much of that mess. The US military has always bolstered and prevented a lot of BS, but in the past decade China has tried to remove the US from many sea lanes, and that is to the detriment of us receiving goods in a safe and timely manner. So what happens ??? That drives up the costs of insuring these goods, and premiums have skyrocketed for insuring the ships, the containers, the personnel, and the actual goods on the ships. So prices just did not suddenly skyrocket in the past year due to covid, but it has been a latent, if not on-going build up of so many different cost inputs, that make it virtually impossible for most products to continuing to remain so low priced. China is also in deep financial debt, far worse than the US, and more than double our national debt of $28 trillion. Few people know that, except our government officials. The Yuan is rising against the dollar because of this, not just because the dollar by itself is weakening. CHina has artificially suppressed their currency for decades now, against the US dollar, so they could command producing a large chunk of the world's goods. But that has come at a VERY steep cost, which has led to them 'buying down' in effect their currency. Well that ain't going to happen much from here on out, and so we will see some very large price increases coming from their currency going up, and ours going down versus theirs. Just like Bolton mentioned. So expect from here, ebike prices to keep going up year after year, with the usual bozos cutting corners and trying to offer the 'lowest priced ebike' and of course not giving one iota about the lower quality product they are peddling to you the US naive consumer. and geez, stop listening to the Bozos over at the EBR forum commenting on this stuff. they are totally clueless. and will be a massive distraction for you in terms of making a sound decision on an ebike purchase.

Long but valuable comment! There is a lot at play, but I think the main thing you've pointed out is worth talking about - we rely on China for ebikes and have no ability to make them here in the US. I DO think it's possible, but will take substantial investment in certain key components.

I think the flaw on some people’s logic for these and other products is moving manufacturing is the fix. It doesn’t have to work that way. What happens is components Noam be shipped instead and assembled here. That gives a more granular choice of getting parts sourced here or other countries instead of one assembled unit from one source.

It’s common that as demand for goods increases it can outstrip production and cause temporary price surges. The normal response in a capitalist society is for production to increase to satisfy that new demand. In this situation, where cost of doing business with China is greatly increased is that production should come home to the US. Perhaps someone like Bolton could start producing brakes with a local supplier?

You are leaving out greed. Many business owners who take out a 5% loan use it as an excuse to raise prices 10%. In fact, much like the petroleum industry, every conceivable thing, from things that only partially affect their supply line to things that have nothing to do with their business (but sound like they do) is used as a reason to raise prices. This is how industries find their model, which as you know differs from product to product. Just don't leave out greed, cause everyone wants to get rich.

I would love an ebike. The cost is ridiculous to begin with and now it's going up? I am an avid motorcyclist and cannot justify the cost of an ebike compared to a motorcycle. One can get much more value for their money by staying in the motorcycle market. From a cost and engineering perspective it would be folly to enter the ebike market at this time.

What you will also see, which is way worse than price increases, is due the lack of supply the brand bike components (Shimano, Tektro, Suntour, KMC, kenda, Schwalbe, etc), and now 2 to 3 year back logs, will cause some very inferior component substitutions. China is RIPE with those very low tier low quality suppliers you never heard of. And even worse, is the massive counterfeiting of batteries, where the factories selling ebikes to firms like Rad Power, Himiway, Juiced, Ride1up, Bolton, etc will be selling what THEY BELIEVE are Samsung, are in reality grade C counterfeit batteries, with Samsung labels or LG labels slapped on very inferior cells. This has been increasing massively over the past 5 years in the ebike world, to now where we are at a point, that the shortages are forcing the chinese based factories who assemble these ebikes and are the ones buying these individual batteries (and other bike components), to simply turn a blind eye, and they will just nod their head, when Rad Power, Himiway, and the 90% of other on-line only sold brands ask "are these Samsung cells ??" Yes sir, will be the reply, yet there are zero guarantees. Everybody is selling these ebikes, and there is no consumer protections or inspections going on AT ALL, either in China and certainly not here in the US. The e-bikes are boxed in China, and the first time they are opened, is at your doorstep, when you as the consumer get the ebike, as more than 70% of ebikes are now being bought on-line, and NOT at local shops. So just like that bag of Dorito's has stayed the same price, the number of chips in it, has declined. Your ebike will be the same way, except now you will merely have shorter life components, and you wont know any better until your on-line bought, el cheapo ebike (usually priced below $2000 'Great DEAL' you thought you had) falls apart in only 3 to 5 seasons. The big firms like Trek, Yamaha, Giant, Specialized, ALL keep a super close handle on every aspect of buying in their supply chain, but I guarantee you that Rad Power, Ride1up, Himiway, Lectric, who's ebikes are all mostly below $2000, have ZERO watch or handle on any of this component quality, and they will just accept whatever the 3rd party factory they contract with, and don't own, simply sends them. They are all selling ebikes like crazy, and are literally getting fat, dumb, happy and rich off of unwitting US ebike consumers, and will continue to do so, and not give a rats behind about the quality of the product their customers receive as long as this massive sales surge in ebikes continues. These on line brands, were already at massive arms length in every factory contact dealing prior to Covid, and now don't even travel to China to do a once per year 'buying' visit that they used to do. there are over 300 ebike 'brands' (mostly just a logo slapped on imported ebikes that are clones with next to no real engineering, and just copying) and 90% of those are not real brands, and they really only middle men, shipping you mostly low quality stuff with a few 'nice brand' components sprinkled onto the bike frames with a battery and a motor attached. And its been amazing how utterly stupid US consumers have been who keep buying such garbage ebikes from the likes of Rad, or Himiway, or R1up, or Lectric, or Natko, or the hundreds of other also rans. Europe is 10 years (at least) ahead of the US, and they largely NEVER would buy this crap. Thats why so many quality ebike brands (that are indeed priced over $2k) over in the EU sell so well, and its not just bc the Europeans bike more, or use them for daily errands or commuting to work. Its because they KNOW garbage when they see it.

IMHO e-bikes are becoming more of a status symbol, fad and cult than viable transport. Modped, very similar to ebike, some even have pedals, if that your thing, have been around for very long time, but I don't see that people (adults!) who own or want e-bike ever considered a moped. Some _adults_ get offended when I suggest getting a moped or small motocycle instead of e-bike. And for status symbol company can charge whatever the customer can pay. See Apple products.

Hard to store, hard to maintain, costly to service. Small zone where you wouldn't be just as well off with a regular bike. To some a skateboard is transportation , too.
