People who see others like me playing Fallout 3 and Skyrim with 120 mods each (not an exaggerated number) and say "why do you even bother playing those games if you clearly don't like the vanilla experience at all?" because they don't understand that I wouldn't go through the effort to install so many mods if I didn't enjoy the base game to begin with. Modding your games isn't taking a game you don't like and turning into one you do, its enjoying a game and being smart enough to recognize that just because you like it doesn't mean its perfect, and that mods could improve it, thus letting you like it even more than you already do. I think a lot of people with the "why bother with mods" mindset are people who don't really understand what modding actually is or can be, they think its all just replacing parts of the game with different, brand new parts, when it could just be pure additions that don't replace anything at all. They don't understand the full breadth of what a mod can be.

On the topic of mods, I think a lot of people who install mods either 1) already like the game or 2) almost like the game, but want to tweak a few things to make it more fun for them. Saying "is this even the same game just because I slightly altered some mechanic" is like saying "is this still the same salad if I add one additional ingredient to the recipe" Like, if you almost enjoy the salad but only need to tweak one thing to have it be your favorite meal, you probably still like the core salad, just not as much. And hey, does it really matter if you call it a new kind of salad? It's like 95% the same stuff. Meanwhile, bug fixes/fps patches are basically like if you bought a pre-packaged salad from a 7-11 or something, but when you get home you realize their ranch packet has gone bad, so you go to the fridge and get your own ranch. Still the same ingredients, but arguably even closer to the intended experience, because obviously the people who made the salad wanted you to have unexpired ranch.

Like don't get me wrong, it opens the possibility to improve the game, sure, but as we've seen especially with something like Mario 3D All Stars, not every company views it that way. Sometimes they make the game worse. New Soup U Deluxe makes it to where you can't play as Blue and Yellow toad at the same time. So if you're playing 4-players, someone has to pick one of the easier characters. It's bonkers.

Like 90% of the biggest modding communities come from sandboxy type games, where the devs leave a majority of the tools in the hands of the players to craft their own experience. About the power level thing that Coney commonly talks about it{s more about gauging the conversation (a really hard thing to do admittedly). I won't talk about Splatoon to the guy that only plays FIFA or cinematic PlayStation games. Maybe I'll be surface level with someone that likes shooters, and depending on their interest talk more about it or talk about something else. And obviously the Nintendo crowd will be more familiar with it and I may even ask for favorite weapons and stages and such.

The modded game thing is so real! I think like Pokémon is the craziest thing for this. So many people don’t engage with the actual systems of Pokémon games because they hack in max rare candies to hit the level cap and use emulator speed up effectively turning the game into a boss rush sim rather than an actual rpg with a world to explore.

In regards to Nintendo Re-masters/makes/releases, I prefer low-modified bundles over these glowed up full retail singles. If I could get all the 2D Zeldas in 1 package I'd gladly pay full retail for it. Or the first 3 Paper Mario's. Or all of the Metroid Primes. Give me quantity over quality so I actually get more content.

I think the one about talking about, “if you’re a gamer” really comes down to; 1. What age demographic are you in 2. Are you an extrovert or introvert Because onG I’ll never tell anyone anything personal until I know we going to talk again, but if we do talk personal, and about games, I’ll mention what I play or am playing and such

0:52 this has been my issue with competitive games for a while now. There has always been a meta but in the past it wasn't as certain and there was more differentiation even among playing the same characters. These days I see people playing the best character with the most flowchart style right off the bat
@Bone83805 ай бұрын
Nah, I feel you haven't actually experienced the older games pre-internet if you think that people weren't as certain as to what the meta was back then. Just because the assumed meta would later go on to be proven wrong doesn't mean it wasn't meta at one point in time. Blanka is still top tier if you don't know how to deal with his gimmicks and knowledge checks, Ken taking his place because of other factors doesn't actually change anything.

ok but "liking the game" and "liking the modded game" are different things, I dont really like vanilla minecraft but i love modded minecraft, mods sort of become their own thing that is different than the actual game. TBH it sort of is the same as the music question, why wouldnt you just keep looking until you find the thing you like? if i dont like the vanilla experience why wouldnt i fuck up the game i spent money on until i like it?

Even though it's probably not possible for every remastered game (either because of programming, style or engine) i would like to be able to decide if i want to play a game on the new or old graphics (for example halo 2 anniversary or diablo 2 resurrected) cause imo it's a nice gesture to the original creators preserving their old version and for some that grew up with it and want to feel nostalgic

My counterpoint to mods is this: to me, modding a game is a statement saying "I liked the base game quite a lot, but I've had my fill and want to change things up a bit." This has been the case with most of the games I've modded. The only game I can think of that bucks this trend is Ninja Gaiden 2 sigma. I mod it to be more like the original version because I don't like the changes made to sigma, and I only play sigma because the original is unavailable.

22:22 I am the exact same way. I refuse to touch a game's modding scene because I want to experience the game in its purest form, as the devs intended. I especially refuse to touch QoL mods for a stronger version of the same reason Once I started replaying some games multiple times a year, however, I came to see the value in content mods. I love playing Lethal Company with friends, and I don't find games repetitive easily, but sessions start feeling boring when you play for multiple hours a day, 4-7 days a week, for a month. I still want to play the game, my friends still want to play the game, but it's hard to find the motivation to after a while. So we turn to the mods, spice things up, keep the game fresh

I'm right with you Coney when it comes to not modding games. In any of my Fallout games I play I don't use mods outside of the compatibility fixes for New Vegas and Three because they were designed for Windows Vista and XP.
@ALloydRH5 ай бұрын
Yeah the modded one is definitely an opinion. Sometimes games with fun/unique ideas just get forgotten by the original devs, and it's up to the fans to create their own pseudo-remaster. There's also something weirdly fun about browsing sites like game banana to customise your own experience, or just seeing what new stupid outfits people have put your favourite characters in, almost like playable fanart.

See with the hiding your power level thing, I definitely do it depending on who I'm talking to. Like a while back I went to a smash major and like the people who are around my age at my workplace I was able to tell about that because they'd think its cool and wouldn't question it, but because its video game related I was more vague about it to my older coworkers cause I did not want to have the conversation about "oh I drove a long distance and payed a lot of money to play a video game. No i didn't win" y'know. It helps that I have another hobby that I can talk about that for them is easier to parse so they can just assume it relates to that and has nothing to do with video games.
@fruitspunchsamuraig45465 ай бұрын
17:30 i think its interesting and a generation gap for sure, something to consider is that video game and anime apparel before like 2014 was incredibly bad and impossible to wear, mfers were roaming the world with fat Mario logos or Attack on Titan insignias on their chest. Hiding your powerlevel wasnt a "you need to be ashamed NOW" thing but kind of a small game, seeing what small references people could get away with, which was still cheesy back then but it was for fun mostly. Its way different now that even nerd fashion has evolved to want to look nice over being a billboard and things like japan streetwear came into style, but in a sense thats still "hiding your power level", what Megan the Stallion does is still a lil obscured from being just an anime cosplay, even if its incredibly obvious to people who know. Theres also not wanting to talk to other fans if you can help it too lmao but that might be resentment part of the opinion.

I don't think the fact that you're using mods in a game makes the enjoyment you're having any less legitimate. I never would've played Persona 3 if I couldn't control my party members. It may go against the original design, but I'm not letting one stupid decision stop me from enjoying an otherwise fantastic game
@chefdunsparce42543 ай бұрын
I think one thing about mods is that mods can increase the level of content drastically through mods, making the game just have more to do, so you can *keep* playing it If you *need* mods to play a game though, I kind of understand that, at that point the game might not be amazing, but when I think mods, I think ways to freshen up a game I've sunk hundreds of hours into already

I hard disagree on the power level thing. It's a real life filter for people. Honestly, the more out there your interests are, the more you should display it, so you can only find interactions with people that either don't mind or share your interest. Like, if you love anime, and theres a stranger that thinks thats awful, do you really wanna be involved with them anyway? Putting it off until later into knowing someone won't make it better. Of course, this assumes you want to socialize to some degree. If you just wanna buy groceries and go home and not talk to anyone than yeah, maybe just wear a blank t-shirt or something.

On the topic of game mods, it's kind of subjective. For some people, playing a game is fun and if they want to modify it, that's thier prerogative. I've always been the kind of person who mods occasionally, but it's typically after I've beaten a game and want more out of it (roguelikes especially, Risk of Rain 2, Slay the Spire, and TBoI were games that I think mods enhanced the experience of long after I 100%'d them). On the flip side, the core aspect of games *is* important, and you can absolutely go too far. However, the point stands that if you don't like the game from the get-go, then mods aren't going to solve the core issue of that.

My input: people who say jeans are uncomfortable haven’t tried the “stretch” jeans many stores offer now. Feels like spft pants on the inside but is stretchy and looks like jeans on the outside. Also jeans are very fashionable and versatile. Onions rings ate overrated, all of the onion comes out after one bite and you’re stuck with batter. But blooming onions are better. Mods on games are ok after you beat the game normally at least once

My thing about mods is I need to be able to play it without mods after using mods and enjoy it to consider it worth continuing to mod. If I can play the base game after using mods and have a good time then I still enjoy the game I’m just sprinkling some spice on it sometimes.

I think it's interesting to combine the opinions of re-releases/remasters being good for accessibility and modding being unnecessary. When I was a kid, I'd emulate n64 and GBA games in a heartbeat, and mod my wii to have smash and mario kart characters galore. But now I'm an adult, and I simply wait for emulated games to be re-released officially, and I don't have the patience to mod a Switch. I assume coney and I are in the same boat. With age comes the desire for that stuff to be done for me. I'll take what I can get. I don't have time for all that.

To pull my OPINION out of the pig trough for a moment since I wasn't at the stream to expand on it: The point I was making was not that the commentators and creators are the progenitors of the in-person and brotherly-love vibes of the FGC, but that they uphold and carry that direction in their presentation & style. I think that if it was all polished, professional, and buttoned-up, that unique culture wouldn't carry on at ALL as widely as it does now, especially with so many fighting games playable online without ever having to leave home and go to locals. tl'dr the 'nobody aint shit, we're all just guys hanging out' blanket of the FGC would be in danger of slipping away if the comms/creators didn't carry that banner into their engagement Good movie btw

on the modded games bit, it really depends on what the mod actually does. if it's a mod that has to fix core issues with a game or patch out something that you didn't like about the original, then i feel like it's a fact, but something like brawl PM or terraria calamity are a different story, because at that point you could have someone that hates brawl but loves PM because it changes/adds so much that it's basically a different game. I played modded terraria with a friend once, under the pretense that we would be playing with the calamity mod, and they added in like 20 "quality of life" mods that do nothing but change the game to make it "better". they included: -adding extra accessory slots (this ruins the game's balance, but my friend argues that wings are basically a requirement and shouldn't take up an accessory slot) -a new storage system that allows you to put everything in one big, searchable, infinitely expanding chest, so we don't have to organize our chests. -instant builders for things like boss arenas or housing because my friend doesn't like building. -extra npcs to purchase potions from so we don't have to do alchemy -infinite consumables as long as you have 30+ of them -lower respawn times and respawning with full health and mana (makes bosses way easier) -faster mining speed ("mining is boring") -a literal "cheat sheet" (allows spawning items, npcs, instant killing things, invincibility, the works) he uses this for things like increasing spawn rates while grinding, setting the time when he doesn't want to wait (both of these have in game solutions that you just have to put in a little work for) spawning items he deems "too grindy", instant killing annoying enemies he doesn't feel like dealing with, and much more. like dude if you hate the game just say that

22:10 As far as modded games are concerned, I think if you need mods to enjoy a game, then you don't enjoy the game. Ones that improve performance, especially if you have a low end computer, are perfectly valid to "need" though. But this is also not to say that you can't enjoy modding games, especially when the mods provide a unique experience. Games like Kaizo Mario, and Project Melee are distinct enough from the game being modded that they stand on their own, and it's perfectly valid to enjoy Rivals of Aether workshop. But Liking them and liking the base games are 2 different things, and these are mods that have significant effects on gameplay.

weird case i can think of for mods lets say sonic adventure dx on steam. Its a pc port of an xbox port of a pc port of a gamecube game, which is a remaster of a dreamcast game each with their own bugs that add up to the pc port being bad that everyone thinks sonic falls through the floor. Is it the developers intention to make the pc port bad? did they want me to play a bad port? ofc i can play the fixed gamecube one anytime without bugs that the pc port doesnt have. bottom line is i think it depends because there are bad ports (sly cooper and sonic only come to mind here sorry) that really do need bugfix mods to make it like the intended original experience the devs wanted you to have

People who play with mods have almost entirely put in an insane amount of time into that game, unless it's like bug fixes. Dishonored is my favorite game of all time, but I play with NG+ mods because I don't want to have to recollect all the runes for the 400th time. I want to get to the part about the game that I love the most. It's like if you cut off the fat on a steak, just because you don't like eating steak fat doesn't mean that you don't love steak.
