A lady at the boulangerie corrected me in the same way. J'ai dit "Bonjour je voudrais une pain au chocolate" and then the lady said "UN, un pain au chocolate ! ". And then we both laughed. I said désolé et merci. She knew I was American and she told me her son is in New York, then I told her I'm from New York and then she kept saying French words that I didn't quite understand. It was a very pleasant interaction. She told me I'll understand some day.

@Anny AmayaAyala so i am in lille (north of france) since august and i really like it here! of course it is not a normal situation, a lot of time at home, bars and unis closed. the french people are not the easiest to approach, they often like to stay with people they already know. but where i am are so so many international students, it‘s super cool. i am in a school of management and we have to do lots of groupprojects; working with the french is super annoying because they are not very motivated and don‘t work until last minute😂 i love the french architecture & pastries. also france is such a beautiful country, you‘ll find many places to visit!

Paris was the city with the most unpleasant confrontational conversations we have ever had. From yelling at us at the grocers for not weighing fruit ahead of checkout to slamming our food trays down in front of us. We plan to visit again this year because the city is so darn beautiful, and the food sooo divine! But this was our experience. Great vid! 😊
@dubmait3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I found your conversation really interesting. Especially at the start. French people seem to have a reputation, for not learning english, or the stereotype is that they can speak it but choose not to. Every time I go to France I try to practice my French, and always get a response in English. I find it very hard to practice over there. I very much feel that the stereotype has now gone the other way, and this makes it difficult to learn French. Desolé pour ecrire en anglais mais je peux pas dire tous en francais. :)
@giulioascari2143 жыл бұрын
Agree, I have the same experience when traveling to France. I was speaking just French in order to practice, for instance by renting the audio-guide in French in museums : when they heard my Italian accent, they said "are you really sure you want it in French?". Also, working at a university, I deal with French universities and we interact easily in English.
@connorgessel3023 жыл бұрын

@@LAductions but Paris is beautiful, it’s iconic, it has the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre and the Seine! It’s not a lose lose situation. Your English isn’t perfect yet, so don’t worry about your poor French, just enjoy Paris! A dozen very expensive meals overshadowed by a simple takeaway.

So fun hearing your reactions. Nobody corrected my French when I visited France, but people did let me know if they were annoyed with me or if they were being friendly. The stereotype of Americans living to work is pretty accurate. The French have a better work life balance than us. That is an interesting point you make about Americans putting more emphasis on extra-curricular activities and hobbies...I think it's because (in general) we like to be creative, are very individualistic, and need a break from work :D. I never really thought about that.

French people are mean? Maybe not. But much of visitors interactions are with sales ladies. Les vendeuses sont tres effrayantes. All the students in my French class in Paris learned to say, "j'ai peur de la vendeuse." Our teachers were confused. They didn't think the salesladies were mean. But in America, we are used to them saying, "You look so beautiful! You look young! That looks amazing on you!" In Paris they will certainly tell you if something looks too tight or too young for you. Which to us is horribly insulting. Our teacher asked, "don't you want them to tell you the truth?" We all said, "Non!" We have eyes. We don't need you to tell us we are fat and aging. Tell us we are fabulous!

I am part-French in origin (long ago) and so I've always been interested in the French. I've had a few French naval pilots as students over the years. So, here go my general observations: as a group they do not immediately warm-up, BUT, this varies by individual, too. We can share, we are cordial, but there is something withheld about them in general. I think they regard study the same as they do work: when they're at work, it is work. Play is outside. They are dedicated to the task at hand, meticulous and flawless in performance. So, in that respect, it makes life easy for me! The French are actually a real contrast with the Italians although they are cultural cousins. With the Italians,the getting-to-know you part is effortless - and fun. The French to me are like a cat. Distant, mysterious, and interesting.

I know this is old but here are my experiences in france: in 1997 i was a student in strasbourg. it was miserable. i left a semester early, as did many of the foreign students in my program. the french students ranged from mildly interested in free english practice, to indifferent, to cruel and rude. frequently when meeting someone for the first time they would tell you "je déteste ton pays" or "vous n'avez pas de culture". really ignorant comments. it was exhausting and made me hate french people. In 1999 i did a visa exchange and worked in paris at the american library. i had better french and fewer expectations. it was generally a much better experience, maybe because at that point people couldn't guess my native language/country. parisians aren't warm but they were much less xenophobic and depressed than alsatians. also, every person whom i told that i'd studied in alsace asked me why i would pick such an awful region for foreigners. so apparently alsace has a reputation... but anyway, i didn't make friends with french people in either place but paris was a fairly good time (i was 22). i think france has probably changed a LOT in the last 24 years. there was an extremely strong and overt anti-american vibe in the 90s because france was in the shitter with 25% unemployment for college grads. meanwhile the US was in the first dotcom boom and unemployment was 4%. Those were golden years in the US and shit years (as usual) in france. in retrospect, they were insecure (and really, none of them had been to the US or spoke good english, they just repeated shit they heard in the media or from professors). during covid i decided to try to relearn some french after 20+ years and people seem a bit mellower than before. i also spent a week in paris in 2019 and was shocked by how much friendlier even security guards were than 20 years before. so, there's hope yet for the french! and i'm going back in 3 weeks for a two month adventure living with families and taking classes so we'll see. as an aside, this series is deliberatly stupid and low-brow. i'm not sure how many french people realize it but emily is made out to be a stereotype of a dumb american as well. americans like dumb characters because they're supposedly relatable but americans who are mildly cosmopolitan find the series to be ridiculous

It seems that the script supervisor was Louise Arhex, who graduated from La Femis, Paris. So she must have known she was playing to cliches. Entertainment over authenticity. But I learned a lot from your reactions - thank you.

I think, the more you go west, towards paris and farther, the faster they speak and "swallow" stuff. I like how you both spoke because I did understand pretty much but I think also the girl on the right has been very restrained and spoke more clearly as always... the French speaking people in Switzerland are so much nicer to you if you don't speak french as good as they yeah hahah but I like your vids en francais (sorry for not having a c cedille lol)

Salut! Very glad I found your channel, only started learning French a few days ago - do you have any recommendations for music or video media that would suit the vocabulary and comprehension of a beginner? Merci beaucoup pour le film, c’est tres bien!

From my experience french people are meaner than people in other countries, they have no patience with people, I would say it is due to they individualistic nature that makes them selfcentered (every man for themselves mentality). I really had that experience where my new coworkers all ate without inviting me and would just talk over me when I was in their company. But of course there are some great French people I met but they are more an exception than a rule. You girls are adorable though :3

It's like that in Puerto Rico too! If there's an American foreigner in the group, we usually just use the chance to practice english and communicate with the person in their language rather than in Spanish. It all depends on the culture. I've never traveled outside of the US but I've heard that in francophone cities like Quebec, the French find it almost insulting and annoying when a foreigner goes thinking people will make efforts to translate for them.

That’s probably stating it too strongly. In Montreal, bilingualism is the norm. But in Quebec, as you say, it’s predominantly francophone but in a predominantly anglophone country. I’d be inclined towards grace as I can only imagine the overwhelming amount of broken French they hear from the rest of the country. If you drive north to the Lac Saint Jean area, French isn’t just the predominant language but almost the only language. You’ll find the locals there more appreciative of trying to communicate in their language.
