The bulk of the detoxification work in our body is done by our liver and kidneys, if either a person's liver or kidneys is damaged then the person in question would have to go for dialysis treatment for the rest of their life to continue to live, at least until they can get a suitable liver or kidney transplant. Drinking juices of anykind would do jack if the organ(s) in your body whose role is to detoxify your body is already compromised.

@@roqquedoggie There are different types of sugar. The basic ones are fructose (fruit sugar), glucose (basic sugar) and galactose (milk). Among these 3, fructose is the sweetest and the most damaging one (fructose needs to be converted in the liver before it can be utilized). The million dollar qn is: why does HPB still stamp healthier choice on commercial juice sold in supermarkets?
@miakaluckystar
@miakaluckystar 3 жыл бұрын
Thats because the juices meet the guidelines in terms of sugar leve and are a healthier OPTION compared to other fruit juices in the market. Does not necessarily mean they are healthy (depends on how much u drink and your definition of healthy). You can search up Handbook on Nutrition Labelling pdf from HPB and it states the guideline for e.g. less sugar for healthier choice.
@quartzcookie
@quartzcookie 3 жыл бұрын
@Isa Kendra Yeah I knew people would play on the word "healthier". The pdf defines "less sugar" as - ≥ 25% less sugar than the reference food. A regular juice could contain 20 cubes of sugar but the healthier choice juice contains 15 cubes of sugar and it fits the label, "less sugar for healthier choice". Yet both choices are still unhealthy.. So what's the point of stamping healthier choice symbol in this case? It's just misleading. TLDR: HPB could say Marigold Peel Fresh Orange (No Sugar) is healthier than Minute Maid orange juice. But both exceeds daily recommended level of sugar intake. The goal of the public sector like HPB is to guide "uneducated" consumers to easily make better decisions for their health and not be guided by profits.
@miakaluckystar
@miakaluckystar 3 жыл бұрын
@@quartzcookie I think I see where you are coming from and unfortunately there are limitations to everything. It does guide the "uneducated" in the sense that when consumers have to make a choice between a regular OJ to an OJ with HCS, it is healthier to choose the one with HCS because it has a significant reduction in sugar which is better for the diet than the one without HCS. So this makes their decision easier and that's why its called a healthier choice, NOT a healthy product. The healthiest product would be eating the fruit itself. And almost all food products have sugar, the only difference is the quantity and type of sugar. You cannot expect juice to have completely 0 sugar, its not realistic. At the end of the day, consumers need to be even more educated to make the best choice for themselves and learn to eat everything in moderation. And Marigold Peel Fresh Orange (no sugar) is healthier as there is no added sugar (the culprit) and the sugar (fructose) is natural from the orange. It would be very difficult to remove natural sugar and unnecessary. Whereas Minute Maid OJ is not healthy due to the added sugar which is unnecessary but consumers do like the taste of sugar and over the years have adjusted to this level of sweetness. Per serving both do not exceed the daily recommended level of sugar intake of 50g. I don't think these are guided by profits because if i am correct the application for HCS is free (do correct me if i am wrong). So the point is HCS merely gives consumers the option to choose between a specified better nutrient level product to other products in the market and hence the name healthier choice.

I am guessing it's like fried chicken is a healthier food choice compared to pizza because protein and oil don't spike your blood sugar as much? (Disclaimer: fried chicken is NOT a healthy food choice.)
@miakaluckystar
@miakaluckystar 3 жыл бұрын
@@demonsrexis YES! If you compare it that way. Healthier, is a comparison word. Overall have to look at what you define healthy as an individual, which is subjective from person to person. But the HCS is an objective way of comparing food products. Product A has lesser sugar than the general market hence objectively it is healthier yet it may not be a healthy product in your definition which you could also take into consideration the amount of salt, carbs, fat, proteins etc. Thank you for your input! 👍

If you don't have much time: What is called fruit juice is not always the same thing. It may be freshly pressed or have added sugar or be concentrated or oxidised. One thing remains the same: Fruit juices while containing vitamins and benificial things also contain a lot of sugar. Sugar is bad but fruits are good right? That is true but only consuming the the juice of the fruit may not be good enough since you miss out on good parts of the fruit like fiber. Science suggests that fruit juice may have negative effects while fruit is generally healthy. Kids that drink more juice often also end up eating more fruit so the whole fruit may even make juice seem better than it is. The claim that fruit juice is as bad as soda is wrong though most certainly. Our body is very complex and can work with thousands of compounds found in plants that are good for us. It's not just about sugar or vitamin c. Whole fresh fruits have many different good compounds that are good for us and that makes them so good (even though they are sweet). Just looking at two things that have the same amount of sugar and saing they are equally healthy is not thinking far enough. Equally it is not the same to take pills or extracts instead the the whole food. Many extractrs are even scams not containing anything good. So instead of drinking juice try to eat the whole fruit. Or blend the fruit in a smoothy if you want a drink. Try different fruits, they have different benefits (don't eat the poisoness berries). If you are doing smoothies you might as well throw some veggies in there. Many people and kids don't like uncooked vegtables but when you blend them up with some sweet fruits they might actually like it. Try not to only eat your one favorite fruit but enjoying fruit and vegtable is good because you will end up eating more of it. If eating brokkoli makes you never want to eat veggies again then it's not healthy for you to eat brokkoli. Try a different vegtable.

That is a very good point where they focused on just the sugar and not all the other vitamins and minerals in the juice. One thing I do with the pulp afterward for vegetable juices is freeze it, then add the cubes to stews and soups as a thickener. The fruit pulp I freeze and use for smoothies, kind of like what you mentioned when blending the whole fruit.

Good report! I’ve got a BSc and MSc in nutrition sciences, and totally support this information given. A benefit they did not mention however, is the impact of food texture. Whole fruits have texture, you chew it, swallow and will also keep you feeling fuller and have higher satiety. Drinking liquid calories like the juices do not have this benefit, and will make you hungry more quickly, leading to more calorie intake. The weight loss obtained from the detox is too fast. She will gain those kg back in no time. Long term weight loss will be obtained by changing your diet and lifestyle in a sustainable way, it’s just not a quick fix unfortunately. Expend more calories than you take it, but keep it doable in the long term for you.

Cola has sucrose and fruits has fructose. Sucrose like refined sugar spikes the blood sugar and a major cause of obesity. But fructose in fresh fruits does not raise blood sugar coz it needs to be metabolized by the liver. Processed fructose however, such corn syrup, is easily metabolized and considered bad for the body. In short, fruit juices are healthy as long as there's no added processed sugar (may it be glucose, sucrose and fructose). You just can't gauge the healthiness of a beverage on the account of the sugar content alone. It doesn't tell the whole story.

@@NaeMuckle Dont think so, I dont have gluten sensitivity since I dont experience this with other gluten items and I only experience this in the morning when my stomach is empty. Ive had plain white toast/ wheat toast on an empty stomach and I dont feel this way at all. I only experience this with Donuts, sugary breakfast pastries, prepackaged granola bars. Specifically noticed this with the peanut butter Nature Valley bar that has that sugary peanut butter coating on the bottom. I find muffins are tolerable, no problems there. For me its more of the high sugar content in foods. I also notice this when im running low on carrots and my juice is mostly or only Orange. I will get a slight headache from the sugar in the fruit. Not as intense as the processed stuff but its there. Thats why its really important to know how to juice, and what fruits/veggies to have together.

You don't need juices in your diet, you need whole fruits. It's less expensive, has no additives, has no added sugars, and you also get the fibers that are lost during the processing. Undigestible unfermentable fibers help reduce constipation, and digestible fermentable fibers help reduce cholesterol levels and prevent blood sugar from spiking. If you are worried about herbicides and insecticides, when choosing fruits such as berries, go with organic ones. Other fruits that have thick skin, which you usually peel off, the herbicides and insecticides hardly make their way inside, thus, you shouldn't worry too much about buying organic ones.

I have a theory about why she lost weight. People accumulate a lot of water in their body. When I was losing weight I had around 4kg of water retained in me. During the first week of diet I lost 3.5kg and most of it was water. Reason why is because when you drink more, your body retains less water. There is a special scale you have to use that the doctor did not use. It measures how much fat, muscle, water etc makes up your weight.

eat the fruit, not just the juice. when you drink only the juice, not only are you not taking in the fibre, you are consuming more than just 1 portion of the fruit. think about it, if you only eat 1 orange after a meal, you will be relatively filled, but if you drink a glass of orange juice, you are consuming 3-4 oranges worth of sugar.

Which was disappointing. They were so focused on sugar yet don’t even differentiate. And they don’t talk about the nutrients (not just vit C) inside a processed juice vs fresh squeezed, which is even more important. They also forget to mention that there is another form of juice... smoothies which retains all the fibers. Very disappointing.

Alexandra Rom their argument: fresh squeezed orange is just as bad as generic store orange juice because it has alot of sugar, but eating a fresh whole orange is better. Excuse me, would fresh whole orange not have the same amount of sugar as the fresh squeezed orange juice? Because you are literally squeezing the whole orange vs eating the whole orange. Sugar content should be same. Only difference is the fibers. So again, just saying “sugar is bad” theory makes no sense. There was no consistencies in their argument/rationales.

The problem is that you’re actually asking the wrong question. It’s not “how much sugar is in the drink”, it’s “what micronutrients exist in my juice/drink”. I assure you that cola doesn’t have as many micronutrients compared to freshly squeezed or cold press. Also, vitamin C is not the be all end all of vitamins and nutrients in there. Good on you for taking the conclusion about the fiber. The lady who suggested whole fruits was right.

Mostly NO. Unless fruit content is pulp as once it's filtered, all the liquid is a sucrose glucose combo. Fruit fibre lowers it's glycemic index but that is all removed in juices. Such a wasste. I let my kids drink fruit juices but in diluted form. However, they love whole fruit so I make fruit smoothies using whole fruit.

Disclaimer-I’m from US so our dietary guidelines might vary some from Singapore Drinking juice because it’s tasty Is fine, but The whole fruit is usually best in terms of ‘healthy’ choices (unless you are not able to eat solid foods then have the juice) or have juice as a treat, there isn’t enough in fruit juice alone to give your brain and cells what they need to function, too many missing components to list here and I’m not even a dietician. Also, the way juice or water cleanses have someone ‘lose weight’ is extremely temporary, and once food is not excluded anymore, it makes someone much more likely to eat a lot more than you’d have eaten if no restriction was in place. You’ll also want to have protein available to your muscles if you’re trying to work out at the same time. Sugar if any variety, even fruit sugar (fructose) is bad for you if not in moderation (a bottle every so often), your body will metabolize them all the same and change your blood sugar levels at the same rate. Not to mention ‘cold press’ is not much better because most of the sensitive vitamins present in fresh fruit are quickly oxidized once the fruit is crushed/juiced/cut open, and you’re stripping all dietary fiber away from the juice as well, heavily reducing its nutrient density, so the highest nutrient density is still in fresh fruits on average.

You are right about oxidation. People in the us are mislead by only getting half of the oxidation story. The majority happens when the fruit is cut. Vitamin c is just part of the story.

The fruit already got a lot of sugar, it counteracts the effects of that amount of sugar through its fiber structure, and juice is basically breaking all of its fiber down and let you enjoy pure sugar

People here who are relying on a juice detox to try to make up for your lack of nutrition knowledge or to lose weight it is not sustainable. People are always trying to pay for shortcuts and to avoid effort. If you just eat chicken rice with 70% carbs, 10% protein and 20% fat everyday because it is convenient and think spending multiples in juices are gonna make up for that then you need to reconsider your life.

I am not a doctor so I may be wrong. But I am starting to think that juices are not good for your health. The reason is: you should not eat TOO MUCH, TOO FAST. By making your food into a juice and drinking it, you are swallowing a large amount of food too much, too fast. The digestion starts at the mouth, with the saliva. You should chew slowly and deliberately to give time for the saliva to digest the food. When you finally swallow the food, it is already half-digested, making it easier for the stomach and intestines to finish the digestion. That is why most doctors tell you not to eat too much, too fast, and to chew slowly and thoroughly. When you make your food into a juice and drink it, you are skipping completely the chewing phase. You are sending a large amount of undigested food directly into your stomach, putting enormous pressure to your stomach. Your stomach will not be able to cope with the demand, and undigested food may end up reaching your intestines, causing problems like diarrhea. You can drink water, or milk, or tea, but not your food. You should not drink your food. You should sit down, take your time, and eat your breakfast slowly and calmly, enjoying the taste of the food. You should not drink your breakfast in a few seconds. And I am saying this to all kinds of juice, not just celery juice, but also orange juice, apple juice, etc. If your lifestyle is such that you don't have time to eat your meals slowly, I think you should really reconsider your priorities in life! Food is DELICIOUS! Eating is one of the best pleasures in life! Some people may like food more than sex! Nobody wants to have sex for just a few seconds! Why do you want to swallow your breakfast in just a few seconds? Why not enjoy your food, take each bite slowly, enjoying the taste of good food? Why live your life without enjoying one of the best pleasures life has to offer? If you don't have time to enjoy eating, I think your priorities in life are completely screwed up.
