As an outsider (British), I see Greece as uniquely Greek, and that is a good thing. I worry that, in an attempt to "fit in" with the dominant parts of Europe (France/Germany), Greece may begin to lose its "je ne sais quoi". Greece has an authenticity that many more "polished" (forgive the term) European countries lack - this is what makes it so attractive. I think that "becoming European" involves becoming globalised which, unfortunately, encourages cultural homogenisation and a loss of authenticity. Look at England - little is left of the traditions that we are known for. They now exist merely to satisfy tourists, or are perpetuated in media such as "Downton Abbey". As globalisation takes over, local culture is reduced. To me, Greece is unfamiliar and familiar simultaneously. It has enough "exotica" to be exciting, but it is not so different that one feels out of place. The number one thing that I find hardest to deal with is the family structure. Gender roles seem to be more fixed, adult children tend to stick closely with their immediate family, and there is an overall patriarchal organisation. This can be quite hard for a northern European where such close family groups are not so common. - Just my two pennorth.

Thank you for your comment, you described so eloquently what I had in mind, and I'm Greek. You nailed the thing with the family structure. As a Greek I believe that we are just Southern Europeans and more specifically Mediteranneans. Not east not west not middle easterns not Europeans. Just Greek Mediteranneans and uniquely Greek. The peoples that come closer to us, because I have travelled a lot, are the Spaniards, the Maltese, the Italians and maybe the Portuguese. I am not referred to the Cypriots, because we realize we are the same country and the same nation, so we consider them as Greeks. Personally, I believe, there are Greek elements that are unique and I would not like to lose them, but there are also elements in Greece that should change or should resemble to europe. It is the opposite. The existence of Greece was when Syrians escaped occupation from the Persians, as they called them the “barbarians of the East”, and also from the earthquakes to the North. In fact actual meaning of Greeks in Arabic is those who fled, and they transferred with them all their knowledge and civilization and founded what is called today Greece, Rome, Malta, Italy, Spain, and Sicily. Indeed, they were proud of their origin as Syrian Arabs, and some of them linked their Arab origin to their names, such as Philip the Arab and Septimius Severus Arabicus. Search for the real history, Syrian, and do not be fooled by the lies of the savages of the North, who today are called the Europeans, who were never affiliated with the Greeks, but on the contrary, Greeks were in wars with them, the Persians, the Mongols, and other peoples of the East named today Asians, and they were at peace with the Arabs from Syria and Iraq to the Maghreb. They were always defending or liberating Arab lands, either from the barbarians of the north or the barbarians of the east, as did Alexander of Macedon, nicknamed Alexander the Great, and Heraclius. Even the first historian Herodotus was a Syrian who was proud of his lineage and his land. Search his description of the borders of Syria that he wrote and everything will become logical and made sense, and you will understand why Turkey was stripped of its Syrian Arab origin, language and race 100 years ago by the northern and eastern barbarians. And you will understand why the savages of the North and East in the past centuries and even today have attacked Syria and Iraq, because between them and the Syrians, led by the Greeks, there is an ancient blood feud, and you will understand why only the Greeks and Romans exist, apart from the Greeks, Rome, Italy, Mali, and Sicily. In the Arab lands only, they were at peace with them, defended them, and shared civilization with them. I advise you to watch Dr. Ahmed Daoud to know your true history and not the falsification of the Franks, Germans, and Vandals from the eighteenth century.

The people that settled in the Mediterranean had a good climate, and were able to make a great, vibrant culture based around art, music, and politics. In Ireland, Scotland and Wales however the climate wasn't so good, and therefore culture was never able to cultivate that vibrancy and passion of the Mediterranean. The question is not whether the Greeks are Europeans, but whether the Europeans are Greek. The answer is, to a large and hopefully growing extent, yes they are. How? By subscribing to the basic tenets of Greek Civilization,. If you have adopted Reason, Science, Humanism, and secular Democratic values as your way of life, you are Greek. Doubly so if your aesthetic ideal (=what you would like yourself, your kid, or your mate to look like) is one resembling a Greek statue. Whether you know it or not..

I think what makes Bulgaria feel different from Greece is the fact, that it was stuck under communist rule without much personal freedom and severe poverty for decades. There are still plenty of people alive who lived through this, plenty of the typical large housing blocks in different stages of decay and visible poverty, for example around Sofia's airport. But there are definitely similarities, for example in food and music, and the weather being frequently warm enough to spend a lot of time outdoors including in cafes and restaurants.

Easy Greek yes, I tried to say pretty much the same, there are a lot of similarities, I have been to Bulgaria twice, the first time it was still fully under communist rule, and it felt so poor and grey, and even then some similarities were visible. I think that the meaning of European has been perverted. What does it mean to be European? For a lot of people, specially in periferic countries (for example, in Spain, where I live), "European" is synonym of Germanic (or North European). We even had a famous philosopher (Ortega y Gasset) who said: "Spain is the problem, the solution is Europe". But, aren't we supposed to be part of Europe? Europe means a lot more than that. Countries with diverse cultural background have contributed equally to the development of the European identity. We cannot conceive modern-day Europe without Ancient Greek culture (philosophers, institutions...). Spain, my country, has influenced so much the European history, as well as Portugal. The Balkans and Eastern countries have also their own distinct features which enriches Europe. So, I don't see the point on relating Europe to just one cliché, when Europe is by definition diverse, made up with countries who share some cultural traits which makes Europe a recognisble identity inside and outside the continent.

Europeans do the same thing with Asia and Africa. They treat only East Asia as the "real Asia" and Sub-Saharan Africa as the "real Africa". So you finally get a taste of your own medicine. You like to exclude West Asians from Asia and you like to exclude North Africans from Africa. How does it feel to be excluded from your own continent?
@erictorres9473
@erictorres9473 2 жыл бұрын
@@sarban1653 Man, that makes no sense. I am Spanish, have a strong relationship with countries from North Africa, specially Morocco. What's more, part of our territory is in Africa (Ceuta and Melilla). Therefore, we don't like to "exclude" North Africans from Africa, because in fact the biggest influence on us from this continent comes from North Africa. We, Spaniards (contrary to a lot of other people) say there's only one America, and when we talk about America we don't mean US, we mean the whole continent, with its cultural richness and diversity. Same with Asia. The fact that a lot of people (specially young people, like in the rest of Western countries) feel attracted to far-east culture doesn't mean we don't recognise other countries as part of Asia. Actually Asia is a such diverse continent with lots of religions, cultures, architecture, languages, which makes it impossible to choose just a few countries as representatives of the collectivity.

Tbh, I'm also Spanish, but I never thought of European meaning Germanic, I always thought Europe = Greco-Roman culture and values and philosophy, and Judeo-Christain mind-set. That's what I have always been taught. I think the Germanic idolatry Ortega y Gasset talked about only exists in very particular sectors of society that have done more harm than good to Spain's nation and society in general. I think it has become more mainstream in recent years, but traditionally speaking, Europe was synonymus of Roman and Greek heritage.

Our temperament is certainly uniquely Greek, we have points in common with the Mediterranean peoples and influences from the east, but we are Greek and we do well to be Greeks. There is no point in trying to be something else because that way we lose our authenticity. Europe should be the place where the cultures of its different nations meet and get to know each other and not the place where some impose on others. Otherwise we will have to be called USE after the USA, I don't think we aim for that. Greece is undeniably European. So much of our civilisation has its beginning in Greece, and Greeks mostly share the same democratic and liberal values as Northern Europeans. Europe is a melting pot of Germanic, Slavic, Romance, Hellenic, Finnic and so on, and our small differences is what makes us unique as Europeans. Love to Greece, from Denmark

I think the question was confusing. The answers seemed to tow the line of attributing Europe to North Wester European culture. A lot of Greeks, and I mean a lot would love to see a transition in some aspects to the way North-Westerners live - and I assure you that it is happening right before our eyes. A big part is due to ex-patriots returning from Germany, or Australia etc. and influencing the culture with adopted values. If the question was, "Do Greeks feel Mediterranean, Balkan or Anatolian" you would've gotten 100% "Mediterranean" as the answer. We know we are European and what we share with the rest of Europe by way of reason, democracy and liberty. These are the corner stones that bind us and will continue to for generations to come. The idea that every human is born free with equal rights is the underscore of our societies. Greetings from Greece!

@Mz TTM I’m not disassociating myself from any Northern European culture (I’m Scandinavian myself), but even during the Bronze Age, Northern Europe was already then tied to the Greeks and Romans through trade routes and eventual cultural borrowings. It’s true that we’re not Greeks but we’re still all Europeans, and we share the same civilization and heritage through not just Greece but through many other corners of the continent

Greece has done more for Europe and what it means to be European from cultural, religious and legal perspective, than rest of Europe has done combined together, so what kind of question is that? It is only naturall that Greece would feel familliar to other meditteranien cultures also, because it was governing those areas for millenias , that does not make Greeks less European

I'm a greek, who lives in the Netherlands. At some point, two girls made a comment and I totally agree with them; Greece is somewhere in the middle and this makes us unique. Greece is and will be the crossroad between the West, the East and the Balkans, this is the gift that we have to handle from now on, we waste some time wondering where we belong. The new Greek country exists only two centuries now, many eastern habbits passed in our daily lives but the same time we grow up with the mentality that in Ancient Greece the base of democracy and the western world begun, and it's true. So, when we will manage to mix these two mentalities and keep the best from each one of them, Greece would be available to offer it's best.

Western civilization is stated at Easter Mediterranea, Greece was influenced from Eastern civilizations and Egypt mostly (speaking about antiquity) later with dark ages it was Muslim golden age that keep the old texts alive and pass them to Europe later to give birth to the age of enlightenment Also Christianity wich is a core aspect of western culture started in east. Western civilization might stated in Europe but you can't not give credit to all the civilizations who give birth to it. @@giannarosize greek region geopolitically is the crossroad between east and west, same concept is applied on middle east region. Great library of Baghdad collected and translated all manuscript from east asia to greco-roman civilisation. Before greek independence, greek dont even call themself as byzantine/ greek, but as romans. European dark ages ain't completely dark ages, bcuz byzantine still as prominent power inherited the romans success and administration. It became downfall not only cuz of ottoman, but the world ain't consider land silkroad as safest passage for supply chain anymore (beside from muslim blockade). Maritime supply chain at that time might be pretty dangerous for our current standard, but still pretty more profitable than land passages. Many muslim culture actually formed as fusion between middle eastern and greek (like oriental phyrgian music, dome, tselota). Because Roman Empire is not an ethno-religious-style polity, more likely a militaristic and administrative polity. Western europe enlightment somewhat promoting the distance between east and west, created and promoted their own identity through time, as well as muslim world. Because Christianity and Islamic cultures before are more knitted and influenced each other. It changed because of crussaders, then creates a xenophobic attitude towards westerners.

Greek culture is the mother of european culture. Greek philosophy infuences whole Europe to this day, greek civilisation was the starting point for all Europe. Sure, there are eastern influences from the neighboring countries and the osmanic occupation, and that is a good thing, making Greece more pluralistic and colorful. You don’t have to fit into a norm to be a European. The people define Europe, it’s not Europe defining the people.

Ancient Greek culture is the mother of European culture, but ancient and modern Greece don't have so many things in common culture-wise. @@EasyGreekVideos I'm not sure what you're trying to say with this comment if I'm being honest. You're talking about a "European culture", but that's not something that actually exists. Europe is a continent and it consists of many different countries (including Greece), ethnicities (including the Greek one) and cultures. But even if it existed as you're claiming , I don't see what exactly it would have to do with the ancient Greek culture considering that ancient Greeks never interacted ( or didn't interact extensively) with the biggest part of Europe and the vast majority of its population. One culture can't truly influence another if there's no interaction. When it comes to the modern Greek culture it's the evolution of ancient Greek culture. Whether Greece is European or not (which is strictly a matter of geography and not exactly a matter of personal opinion) doesn't have much to do with your second question ("how much like ancient Greeks are modern Greeks")

As an outsider, I think Greece is a crossroads. It is heavily influenced by a Mediterranean culture, and shares more tradition and religion with the Balkans. I had to readjust my thought when people first said they felt "Asian" as I would not consider them similar to the far east at all, but the connection to Asia Minor and even central Asia is quite evident, especially in the food. As a seafaring culture (which traditionally leads to a trade of cultures with goods), they have become a unique blend of all the ancient and many modern cultures. I'm glad they are proud of their uniqueness! (Though totally agree with the one girl about how disappointing it is to see people throw trash in the street!)

I don't understand the meaning of question. Greece= litteraly the epithome and the craddle of the European and western Civilization. Greece is the most European country since 3 thousands years. Moreover Greece historically standed his ground despite his geographic localisation nearing North Africa, Middle East, Asia. Amitiés à nos amis grecs, from France🇨🇵❤🇬🇷

Yes, We are European. Our country is cradle of European civilization, therefore yes, i do feel European. Culturally we belong to the Greek world, because the Greek civilization historically wasn't limited only to Haimos, Aegean Sea, to begin with, we older than most, if not all countries, that surround us and history:nobody knows glory and suffering, as we Greeks do.

We are somewhere between Balkans and East. Nowhere near European mentality. We should strive to be acquire the good European traits like work efficiency & ethics, be more obedient to laws, much more organized and punctual etc. Doing so while maintaining our tradition and customs to keep the Greek element alive is extremelly important.

The Double Headed Eagle (looking at both east and west) clearly represents the Greek cultural identity for centuries. We are clearly a blend of both worlds. More than just Greeks, we are also Romans (Ρωμιοί) / or Byzantine in culture, food, language, religion and traditions. Consider that both the East and the West also borrowed many Greek elements. What a balanced and functional blend for all !

Only reason they are not seen as Middle Eastern is because they are Christian, but soon, you will have to be atheist to be considered European and woke. Greeks look the same as Turks, Southern Italians, Spaniards, Portuguese, Syrians, Lebanese people and culture/food are very similar too. Being called European today is an insult to more conservative and religious people who border Europe.

Greece is the mother of Europe. The mother of its culture. That is the historical point. Now my point of view is Greece is a European Mediteranean country with strong oriental influences. But for me is a totally different country than Italy, not the same vibe, not the same mentality, not the same architecture, not the same religion etc... they share the mediteranean culture that s all (olive oil, climat, antiquity history, the sea of course etc..) but this culture is everywhere around the sea (Even the south of France.. and Marseille, founded by Greeks ;) ) Without Greece there is not European culture, they influenced everyone! Love to Greece from France

As a romanian born growing up in Greece I feel that we share more on the Balkan side than the Anatolian, but there is the distinct Anatolian taste in the greek everyday life, the hotheadness is pure anatolian, the refusal to authority(when its convenient) and lets not talk about the driving skills. In my honest opinion, I think that the greek way of life, is more of greek, not purely balkan, european or anatolian, just greek which makes it unique.

@@karlmarx1730 Cultural appropriation? You must be kidding me? Since the Romans conquered our lands and brought their Hellenized culture to us, we "Barbarians of the North" have all right to call Hellenic culture also our culture. Face it. And best pieces of Hellenic culture are now found in Museums of Paris, London, Berlin, Moscow... that must be harsh for you Übermenschen from the South. I recognize your ancestor's superior artificial skills, but they had enough slaves to do the hard work. Our Notthern barbarian did have slaves too, but not as many and they didn't have the climatic advances Greece and Rome had. Just face it: all Eiropeans are descendants of the Old Greeks. And not only Europeans. Have a nice day! :-)

Interestingly enough, many German politicians, scientists and simple people look down on Greece and make us feel unwelcome in a continent bearing a Greek name. (And I don't mean only after 2009. The Great Powers have constantly let us down) Not only that, but our modern culture is invisible and people only study our ancient past. German professors teaching ancient Greek call it "Greek" as if there is no difference between "Greek" (the Greek spoken today by Greek speakers) and "ancient Greek", because a lot North Europeans only value us for our ancient past. I don't want to stereotype and say "all Germans think badly of Greece", and I am sure many Germans are more aware of what is happeneing. But it's worth noting that I have seen this happening again and again. Having an appreciation for the ancient past of Greece is, by no means, negative, but Germans thinking Greece is only this after 2.000 years of cultural evolution seems borderline demeaning for many of my younger and older Greek friends in Germany.
@EasyGreekVideos
@EasyGreekVideos 2 жыл бұрын
@@celseac8107 What you're talking about is stereotypes. Germans are stereotyping Greeks, but Greeks are also doing the same thing for Germans. And everyone is generally doing it about everyone. It takes more focused knowledge and cultural contact to really get to know the people behind the overgeneralizations.
