I am a Greek who happened to live in America many decades ago, I had a Turk neighbor in my age. We became best friends with our families. Living together in a country that is on the other side of the globe, it really bonded us that our countries are neighbors from the same spot in the world. We had many things in common (culturaly), we understood each other more than any other foreigner or american. He helped me and I helped him in time of need, and we always invited each other in our celebrations (even religious ones). When you live together on another part of the world where our political problems do not exist, Greeks and Turks are best friends.

I (a Turk) live in America and some of the very first people I made friends with were Greeks. Still going strong. I had known that we have many similarities but I realized I wasn't even close to how much. So many words we share for instance. My Italian and Greek friends and I sometimes make jokes of Americans about how much colder they are compared to Mediterranean cultures.

@@zekikalmaz4573 I regularly go to Greek Restaurants in my area with friends and drink Ouzo. There is live music at one of the places on the weekends and the musician plays Greek and Turkish songs with his Ούτι (Oud). The place has a very Aegean vibe to it and turns out the owner is a Greek born in Turkey in the 40s.

Feel free to have him as best friend. None will stop you and I'm happy for you. We Greeks are free to do whatever. However, DO NOT EVER speak for all of us. You're not the HEGEMON OF THE GREEKS. Speak for yourself, only. Turks are not and won't ever be our "best friends". The issue is not only political. Greeks are Europeans who have nothing in common with the non-European Turks. Only 2-3 recipes. Even those, they're made differently. You've lost touch with your motherland. Greece has moved on, especially since 1979-81 when we joined the European Union. We follow all the laws and directives of the Brussels. This made us similar to Italians and Spaniards, only. Turks move forward, backwards. Currently, they're a Theocracy. What possibly common ground can we have with them? It's absurd. Only the distance and the fact you live side by side made you friends. It could very well be another neighbor of yours with the same results, especially given the fact we Greeks are open-hearted, hospitable people, unlike the close-minded Turks.

@@mcdtubes We don't share words anymore. When you killed or expelled the Greeks from Constantinople of Smyrna, those back then brought some. Now, they're all gone. They've been replaced completely by Greek words. You know, we've got the richest lexicon in the world with 5 million words and 75 million world-types. The only "common" we Greeks have with the Turks is delusionally in the mind of those who went in the other side of the globe and lost touch completely with their homeland.

I married a Turkish woman. I myself was born in Canada to Greek parents. We met when we were very young. In those days there was some animosity between cultures in Canada. Today attitudes have changed and people realize we have more in common than you can ever imagine. I love the Turkish people. I think we share so much love for music and food. We have literally thousands of words in common. Our foods are shared by both cultures. We lived together for hundreds of years in Asia Minor and in Greece during the Ottoman Empire. I would encourage peace, love and harmony between our countries. Be kind to one another. Sometimes our leaders forget this but we can change how people think.

@@draculas1926 Unfortunately, we are not a community that is very successful in forgetting the good and bad things done to us. We cannot be like the British, whom you once declared barbarians and then invaded their country. Our revenge is as fierce as our friendship. So if someone hates us, there is definitely a reason for it. Why should we own the regrets they don't have? Yes, all countries produce lies. They even try to erase the dark spots in their history so as not to be ashamed of their future generations. Yes, history speaks, but even if they try to turn a deaf ear, history never lies. because history is full of scientifically proven evidence. There's only one thing I can say. If you think about returning to your origins one day, the experiences will be forgotten somehow, bitter or sweet, one way or another. We do not hesitate to share equally everything we have. Just like we share with people of Middle Eastern and African origin living in Turkiye now, who inherited us from the Ottoman Empire. But if you say, we are proud of being Greek and what we do. then do not expect anything from us! Do not give us advice too that you yourself do not follow.

Any Greeks or Turks that dislike each other simply because of their nationality have probably never really met people from said countries. I’m Turkish and my husband is Greek from Australia. Through him I’ve met many Greeks. Some of the older generation were real turkophobes until they met me, a Turk. Experiencing firsthand the similarities in our values, respect towards the elderly, hospitality and warmth, it’s always been too easy to win them over immediately. Same with my husband, at first, some of my more conservative/religious relatives weren’t too fond of the idea of me marrying an “outsider”. Seeing how well he blended in with his looks, values and personality, he’s been the favourite in-law ever since we married 23 years ago. If it wasn’t for our daughters’ school, he would move to Türkiye in a heartbeat.

As a Turkish living in the U.S, I went to a restaurant named Mandolin in Miami, Florida. The restaurant is extremely successful, we waited 40 minutes to get in. It has the Aegean Turkey / Greece vibe with completely white structure and blue table, turquoise colors etc. So, I am trying to figure out if owner is Greek or Turkish :) The menu is not cheap, and it has both Greek and original Turkish food names - that only a Turkish speaking person would know. But, there is no Ayran, a Turkish drink, but an extensive wine selection. I know that 80% of Turkish restaurants would steer away from having alcohol in the menu. Normally, I would figure out right away if a restaurant is Greek or Turkish owned. In this case, I could not! The black waiter (lol) referred to it as it is Turkish food. But the menu has Greek named items that, our usual kebab-cooking people would have no idea about! So, I figured the waiter doesn`t know shit! I walked around the restaurant - they made it like an open garden restaurant that you can find in Mykonos or Bodrum- people were taking pictures in front of restaurant. It looked like you arrived to Greece or Western Turkey. And I saw several direct import food items from Greece. So, I finally asked another waiter. Answer was, owners are a Turkish husband and a Greek wife! :-) Food was amazing!

@@vazelos0002 To be honest, there is not much special to that restaurant. You can do similar outdoor seating, paint things in blue and white. It is a little pricey, but it is bigger servings. Food is not amazing, but successful. It is funny how Latin people take pictures in front of it. Because, in the pictures, it will look like they visited Greece. I have worked and cooperated with Turks. No problems whatsoever. I have no reason to hate a Turk citizen. The only thing constantly causing issues are politics. Far-right wing, nationalistic politics to be exact. The moment someone starts to somehow feel 'proud' for simply being born in a specific country without doing anything else to help other people or offer anything for the common good, things start to go wrong.... Remove nationalistic ideas from your head and start thinking about people and you'll realize that you have absolutely nothing to hate about the 'other' country, whichever country that is. This also includes criticizing both their politics AND your own country's political behavior.

I guess you don't know the meaning of nationalism and racism. Prejudices lead peoples to wrong conclusions. Let me explain it on this occasion, so that you can learn so that you do not continue to draw wrong conclusions. The origin of the words nation and nationalism is Arabic. It comes from the Arabic root mll. milla - millet. It means race. The origin of the too words race and racism is Turkish. It comes from the Turkish root ır - race - uruk. The meaning of this too word is race. Of course, these are their English equivalents. Although the meaning of both words is the same, nationalism and racism are completely different from each other. nationalism; Its aim is to make its own nation materially and spiritually superior to other nations. As Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said, it is the aim and effort to raise your race to the level of advanced civilizations or even higher. Racism is the exact opposite of this. It means to despise, oppress and bully other races other than your own. In other words, nationalism is a beautiful thing and certainly does not have a bad purpose. The real bad thing is not nationalism, but racism. You may not like to hear this, but the best definition of racism to date has been made by the prophet of Islam. he says exactly like this. Racism means persecuting people from your own nation. We have adopted this definition and do not care about the global definition of racism. but the main thing is this. In order not to be racist, you first need to know who is or is not a member of your own race. This is harder to know than not to be racist. I advise you to be careful next time before giving advice to anyone...

There isn't a single instance in history where someone with nationalistic ideas avoided being oppressive to someone else. Naive people think it is romantic to care about your nation but reality is different. What you are talking about is Patriotism. Nationalistic ideas ALWAYS lead to oppression, wars and racism. It has happened before and it happens right now with the large amounts of refugees going into European countries. Right-wing parties are on the rise because they advocate this fake patriotism where your country stands alone and proud. Noone of them mentions that for this to happen you have to pushback and oppress other groups of people that want to find a home/work in your country. There is absolutely NO way to be nationalistic and not oppress some 'enemy' group. @@onurcan8434

@@EasyGreekVideos In fact, the first Turkish empire in Anatolia (Turkey) was called the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum - the Seljuks being a large Turkic middle eastern empire and Rum referring to modern day Rome i.e. Byzantine. The Ottoman Empire was originally a small substate (called beylik) within the Seljuk Sultanate of Rome. The founders of the Ottoman Empire migrated from what is now Mary in Turkmenistan to what is now northwestern Turkey in the 12th century.

Recently, i served my time in the military and i had people make jokes about taking back cities that belonged to someone in the past. People really only made jokes. No one wants war or hate. Only lunatics and people that would see benefit in war, would want conflict. Had i seen a Turkish soldier in my time in the military? Would feel like i would see a reflection of myself. Was only there to serve my time and move on, no hard feelings for things in the past. Conflict only hurts both participants. Love to all people, Greek, Turkish, everyone. As a Greek, i visited Turkey back in 2009, and since then another 3 times. I always had a great time, people there were very hospitable and friendly, i want to get back soon Now, as for how close the two peoples are, i would say that they have things in common, but as i noticed, differences are a lot more than similarities: Mentality: both are "warm", but Turks are a lot more emotional, Greeks are more "comfortable", but Turks more "relaxed". Turkish mentality is "not suspicious at all", Greeks are a lot more suspicious. The Greek stereotype of Turkish mentality is that they are "agathoi" (good people but not "suspicious"/"cunning") Habits: here are many differences: Turks vastly drink tea, Greeks vastly drink coffee (mainly a Greek coffee called frappe, and foreign like espresso). Turks almost never (in the past never) drink wine, Greeks mainly drink wine, Turks rather drink raki, a drink which resembles Balkan rakija and levantine arak. They also drink a lot of ayran. Greeks have no idea what this thing is. Some Turks eat on the floor. The only case Greeks Would eat on the ground would be on a pick nick in the countryside. Greeks prefer dogs, Turks cats. Greeks keep shoes on when visiting a foreign house, Turks remove their shoes in such occasions Music: part of music is identical, part of music is nothing alike. The music of anatolian Greeks is identical to Turkish. Both are a blend of Byzantine, Central asian and Arabic music. Greeks of mainland have a vastly different music, intermediate to Balkan and italian. Greeks of Ionian islands have purely Italian. Cuisine: Turks dont seem to love pork, and have a love for spicy food. Greeks consume pork more than any kind of meat, and rarely like spicy food. Greeks also have a very old pasta tradition, nearly equal to Italian. Turkey has no more pasta than manti ans eriste, both resembling central asian instead of south European pasta. This is not that visible in touristic cuisine, but a lot visible in traditional cuisine Architecture: Turkish architecture is the ottoman vernacular house. Greece has this type only in Northern mainland regions. Southern Greece and Greek islands architecture is similar to Southern European (Italian Spanish) with no Ottoman influence Language: Greek language is a centum (Western) indoeuropean language with "Spanish" sounds, and 60-70% of its foreign loanwords being latin, Turkish is an altaic language As a whole, Greeks are a European nation with limited Oriental influences (and we are not the only, at least all Iberians, Maltese, South Italians, and to a higher extend south Balkaners are European nations with oriental influences). Turks are a blend of central asian, caucasian and persian civilization, with some levantine influence

@@sickturret3587 I read and understand everything you write to me. However in your analysis, you do not go deeper and you see them very superficially. (I hope without deceit). The one you call an old man is still the leader of a regime (not a democracy). The issue of Turkey's hostility to ALL neighboring countries and especially to Greece is not current, but it lasts for many, many hundreds of years. So why do you think that something has changed today, even after the tragically unacceptable and unhistorical behavior of the Turkish leadership and a very large part of the Turkish people? Which politician do you think would be suitable to make Turkey a normal and just state? (if you want you answer because in your country it is a bit dangerous to have an opinion). For the last part of your point of view, I would tell you that what you are doing is called "logical fallacies" and is the same tactic used by both Hitler and Mussolini. In other words, you consider that he who liberates and protects the family, his people and his land is on the same level with the one who is a murderer, rapist and thief.

I'm very happy that both of them have respect for each others religion (She is Muslim and He is Christian), and they are the living proof of when there is love , nothing can stand on your way. I met her family (which now is also my family) and the love i received from their side and also the one we gave to them is unbelievable. If you take out of the way the Religion (for which we have to have respect no matter if isn't ours) , we are the exact same people. If it weren't for governments and politics...we are the same. We stayed at a motel owned by a sweet old lady in Pera and I could have sworn she acted the same as my grandmother bringing us coffee in the morning, telling to dress for the weather and to be careful. There is nothing that divides us as people.

generally old people and people who haven't been to the other country, and who don't know anyone from the other country, give a negative answers. In fact, what they fear (or dont like) is not turks or greeks, but the feeling of "not knowing". they don't even know each other. normally the two peoples are almost exactly the SAME. The positive response of young people increases our hopes for the future. long live the brotherhood of peoples. turkish and greek friendship❤

As a Greek I feel great sympathy and love for neighboring Turkey and the Turkish people, it's a shame that our governments use propaganda to make us hate each other while we shouldn't! As neighbors I think that we must have very good, friendly relations we each other. I really want to visit Turkey and travel in Istanbul and to the costs of Asia minor and generally explore the country, taste turkish traditional food and as a history lover I also want to visit a lot of museums and learn more about turkish history(mostly about Ottoman history)! (Αλλά ο μπακλαβάς είναι δικός μας) Türkiyeden Sevgiler. 🇹🇷❤️🇬🇷

Been to Istanbul , everyone was super polite and super friendly , we were getting offered free tea , lokums etc . Same thing with Izmir . Hate isn't cultivated by the people , hate is cultivated by politicians with agendas. As a Greek , I don't hate Turks , like I don't hate Germans , Italians etc. What has happened in the past stays in the past . We can't -and we shouldn't- forget , but that doesn't mean that we will be hating a nation for its past transgressions till the end of our time. No one is perfect , we aren't perfect either . Wishing you all happy holidays and may 2022 be an amazing year for all of us

It would be naive to think that anyone is perfect. I mean the Hellenic empire (hellenistic Greece) was massive and ruled for three centuries! Were there injustices? Sure, same with Ottomans. But did any of us live 3 centuries ago or even 1? Yes there is a collective ethos but I don't think it permeates or percolates down to Turks and Greeks today. Only bigots buy into that. I was so happy to hear about many Greek pilots joining Turkish airlines during the financial crisis. That shows you that in times of crisis you can rely on your friend and vice versa,

I'm a Turk living in Thracian part of Turkey and we have a lot of people who share same descendance with Greeks in this part of the country. My grandparents used to live in Thessaloniki and migrared back to Thracia due to Balkan wars. We are all just people trying to make a living in this part of the world, political hatred does not concern us. We have Rums living in my town and we all still live together.

There was a boy from Greece in our class in London. His name was Lucas. One day the teacher asked what does Cabbage mean in your language. Me, Lucas and an Arab student said Cabbage. Lucas looked at me and said angrily, you stole everything from us. I tried to be friends with Lucas, but he was always cold. Then I changed the family I stayed with. The neighbor of my new house was a Greek Cypriot family. I kept my distance from the Cypriot family because I had bad experience with Lucas. But they embraced me. They invited them to dinner and sent fruit from their garden. The British were very surprised. They said no one here gives free fruit to anyone. When I was going to meet my Turkish friends, they sent börek and meatballs to my Turkish friends.
