My 100kg squat is clearly superior because I go below parallel. Reckon I'd dominate in rugby

Nice logic. You have better squat, the rugby boys can fack ya up with just one tackle and your squat means nothing 😂

Personally I think box squats can actually be better than half squats for power development with the caveat that you properly sit on the box rather than just bouncing off. The transition from somewhat relaxed (still braced) to exploding has made a big difference to my power

Speaking of partial reps, might be time to look at Ryan Crouser's training. Before putting 23.51m (2 inches/5cm off his WR) at last week's World Championships, in response to a question how Ryan was feeling despite the blood clots in his leg, Ryan's agent just sent a video of Ryan pin-squatting 325kg for an easy double. He was, in fact, ready. Edit: oh, just had to keep watching!

It’s like when I tricep bench for American football and the one bodybuilder in the room tells me I should bench with a wider grip for more chest development 😂

It’s funny how rugby players who are pretty big in real life look normal sized on camera, but actors who are pretty small in real life look huge on camera.

The commentary at the 8:45 mark really nails it. This is an advanced movement for a field sport athlete who is already very strong. The idea that’s it’s more plyometric in nature. The part at at 11:15 about long term development is excellent as well. This guy is already strong enough for a non ss athlete.

Another great video lads. What I love about when yous do full "reaction" type videos is it's only really a starting point to talk in depth about the subject itself.

Re: the raw power point at the 6:40 ish mark Is hypertrophy not also really important for contact sports? "Quality" weight is a big requirement for American Football and rugby

Gentlemen, another very interesting video. I have a question. You focused on how half squats are beneficial due to ability to lift more weight and do it faster than with a full depth squat. However, isn't a benefit also in specificity of the movement? I.e. the fact that a half squat produces force in a movement pattern more similar to sprinting (joint angle)? And that it might be beneficial to be your strongest in more than one (full) range of motion?

What's your opinion on partial rep pin squats instead of box squats? Seems like it'd be safer and it'd be easier to get the athlete to use decent technique
@ianpier16
@ianpier16 Жыл бұрын
I think pin squats are way more likely to get misgrooved than box squats if you hold the vertical displacement constant
@Eipotttatsch
@Eipotttatsch Жыл бұрын
@@ianpier16 I don't quite understand what you mean by that. I just see a ton of people kind of rocking back and forth to gain momentum in their box squats, often losing tightness in the process . That is obviously suboptimal. Also failing a rep can be tricky with box squats. You can't bail like you could with normal squats without destroying the bar.
@ianpier16
@ianpier16 Жыл бұрын
@Eipotttatsch I just meant that with the pin contact the bar is likely to drift forward or back but with the butt to box contact the bar is less likely to move forwards or back
@ianpier16
@ianpier16 Жыл бұрын
@@Eipotttatschlike having a few degree change in hip angle at box contact isn't likely to result Ina missed lift but the bar can deflect off the safety pins quite easily and the bar moving along the rails can change things a lot

Well according to the science quarter squats offer zero benefit to any sport, yet they still can teach you trunk control if you have issues folding at the bottom of a squat

Box squats are completely different, especially when it comes to a long pause as well as Touch and Go. That's called Power training and it's a really good supplement to strength training

Pól here. Not belligerent but appreciate you not being as arsey as I was in my comment. I'll just say, there's a strong reason the IRFU are doing a massive strong push for physios the past few months for the Irish squads. No jealousy towards Aki, he's a beast. In my responses I did also explain why power is vital and applicable in rugby. All depends on the purpose and component of fitness being trained. Granted injury plays a factor also. You also mentioned full range squats is beneficial in rugby, which is the point I was making.
